1. Assumptions of Arts

ART IS UNIVERSAL

Art is a universal phenomenon and is as old as human being. Every society has its own art, which
is encouraged and molded by the patronage it gets from its members. Artists as members of
society create such works of art in accordance with the existing relations in the society.

ART IS CULTURE

Art influences society by changing opinions, instilling values and translating experiences across
space and time. ... Art in this sense is communication; it allows people from
different cultures and different times to communicate with each other via images, sounds and
stories. Art is often a vehicle for social change.

ART IS NOT NATURE

Art that is composed of patterns and aesthetics. Furthermore, art is not nature because art is

not universal. Because nature is what you see and art is what you do. Some are said Art is part
of nature because it is universal, art is cultural, and art involves experience.

Art is not nature because in many ways, art is not “natural”, it is an artificial construct created by

man. Sometimes it appears to be close to nature or it may even sometimes “go
beyond” nature but it always returns to the mind, heart and hands of man.

ARTS INVOLVE EXPERIENCE

Art, then, is not merely the process by the artist; it involves both the artist and the active observer
who encounter each other, their mental environments, and their culture at large. That is, art is not
just a recording of human experience, but it is an involvement of human experience.
