EX: Design a bearing plate to distribute the reaction of a (W21x68) of (A992G50)

with a span length of (15 ft 10 inches) center to center of supports. The total
service load, including the beam weight, is (9 kips/ft), with equal parts dead and
live load. The beam is to be supported on reinforced concrete walls with (6")
width & of (𝒇′𝒄=𝟑 ksi). Use A36 steel material for plate.

W=9k/ft

15ft 10in

Solution:
1.Specifications, Dimensions & Properties:

Steel Fy Fu Sec bf tf D tw k Steel

sectio plate
n
A992 50 W21x68 0.43 A36
G50
1. Loading:
Wu=1.2(4.5) + 1.6(4.5)=12.6k/ft

3. Determine the length of bearing (N) required to

prevent web yielding:
From AISC Equ. (J10-3), the nominal strength for this
limit state is:

1 of 3
Use AISC Equ. J10-5 to determine the value of N required
to prevent web crippling. Assuming N/d = 1.56 / 21.1 =
0.074 < 0.2 so try the first form of the equation, J10-5a.
For Ru ≤ ØRn

So N=2.59" say 3", where N/d = 0.122<0.2 ……………………O.K

In this case & for practical reasons, assume N = full
width of support = 6".
4. Determine the required area of support (A1):

𝑷𝒑=𝟎.𝟖𝟓𝒇′𝒄 𝑨𝟏,
Ru ≤ Øc Pp,
99.7 kips = 0.65 (0.85x3xA1), so A1 ≥ 51.57 in2.
B=A1 / N = 51.57 / 6 = 8.6" > bf = 8.28" O.K
Also for practical reasons try B = 10"
A1 = B x N = 10 x 6 = 60 in2.
