1 Scope

Scope of this material system specification covers minimum requirements for the
Ethernet switch used in industrial networking in Saudi Aramco.

1.1 The Ethernet switch shall be used as part of the Process Information Network;
interconnecting different process information subsystems (DCS, SCADA, VMS,
PSA, CCTV, IP Phone, etc.).

1.2 The Ethernet switch shall be used as a mechanism for allowing interconnection
of Remote sites, RTUs (Remote Terminal Units), Substation IEDs (Intelligent
Electronic Devices), I-Field (Intelligent Field) Surface Unit Instrumentation
Stations, CCTV, IP phones, Data Storage Devices, and other SCADA
(Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition) devices to their backbone servers.

2 Conflicts and Deviations

Any deviations, providing less than the mandatory requirements of this standard require
written waiver approval as per Saudi Aramco Engineering Procedure SAEP-302.

Where industry standards and/or manufacturer's standards and Saudi Aramco standards
disagree, the Saudi Aramco standards represent the minimum standards to be met.

3.2 Applicable Codes and Standards

IEEE Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers: A professional


organization that, among other activities, defines standards in a number of fields
within computing and electronics, including networking and communications.
IEEE standards are the predominant Internet Protocol (IP) and Ethernet
standards used today throughout the industry.

4.2 Definitions

Ethernet Backbone Switch: is a switch that connects multiple Ethernet Edge


switches to the backbone network.

Ethernet Edge Switch: Is a switch that concentrates multiple switches in a


facility and gets them connected to the backbone network via an Ethernet
backbone switch or directly by having the Ethernet Edge Switch as a core
component of the backbone network.

Remote Site Ethernet Switch Connections: is an Ethernet switch that


connects service (s) to the Edge switch or directly to the Ethernet backbone
network.

5 General Requirements

Ethernet switch intended for Process Automation and Control applications shall meet
the minimum requirements stated in this document.

Manufacturer's documents and drawings shall include all pertinent construction details
of the equipment. All pertinent dimensions for construction of the equipment shall be
provided for Saudi Aramco evaluation and approval.

The equipment hardware/software shall not pose any problem, due to changes in date
and time caused by events such as changeover of millennium/century, leap year, etc., in
the normal functioning of the system.

5.1 Engineering Requirements

The Ethernet switch system shall meet the following engineering requirements:
1. The Ethernet switch shall be compact, composite construction and
lightweight. The manufacturers shall furnish the actual dimensions and
weight of the equipment.
2. The Ethernet switch shall be utilized as an active network component that
can allocate bandwidth to each port as well as bind each port to its own
collision domain and shall therefore be used to segment a collision domain
with many nodes into multiple collision domains as one port for one
domain with one node.
3. The Ethernet switch offers the combination of port binding, guaranteed
bandwidth availability and full-duplex operation which prevent delays
caused by extraneous traffic on a link and by packet collisions.
4. The resilience of the hardened switch shall include support for the standard
Rapid Spanning Tree Protocol (RSTP) employing redundant links.
5. Layer 2 backbone switches should support Multiple Instance Spanning
Tree Protocol (IEEE 802.1s/802.1Q). Layer 3 backbone switches should
support Multiple Instance Spanning Tree protocol (IEEE 802.1s/802.1Q)
to run for multiple VLAN's.
6. The Ethernet switch shall support a minimum of IP20 protection class
products. Equipment shall be shock and vibration rated.
7. The Ethernet switch shall have the capability of VLAN and VLAN Tagging
compliant with the latest IEEE 802.1/802.1Q and allow proper network
design of VLAN schemas for data securities of different traffic types.

8. All switch interface connectors shall be reliable, low loss and standard
type so as to ensure failure free operations over long operations.
9. Each sub-assembly shall be clearly marked with schematic reference to
show its function, so that it is identifiable from the layout diagram in the
handbook.
10. The Ethernet switch shall support type of optical transceivers namely LX
or LH with SC or LC connector (Singlemode): 9/125um to 10/125 µm
with a distance of 10 km for LX and 24-72 km for LH and operating
wavelength of 1310 nm and 1550 nm. In addition, the Ethernet switch
shall support 850 nm 5Multimode fibers (SX) connector with distance up
to 550 meters.
11. The Ethernet backbone switch shall support minimum physical dimensions
based on the following:
 Chassis BASED- Rack Mount: 17.8 x 44.1 x 55.2 (cm), 7 x 17.37 x
21.75 (in), HxWxD
 DIN RAIL mount: 14.2 x 36.2 x 12.8 cm (5.61 x 14.27 x 5.04 in),
HxWxD
12. The Ethernet Edge switch shall support DIN Rail plate/frame for 19” rack
mounting. The equipment shall acquire a minimum case dimension so to
fit in a cabinet; example: 4.4 x 44 x 32.5 cm (1.73 x 17.32 x 12.80 in),
HxWxD
13. For remote site connections, the Ethernet switch mechanical dimension
shall acquire a minimum case dimension so to fit in a cabinet; example:
4.4 x 44 x 32.5 cm (1.73 x 17.32 x 12.80 in), HxWxD to be fitted inside
RTU cabinet.
14. The Ethernet switch shall support auto-negotiation, force Speed, full-duplex
or half-duplex mode, and auto-crossover (MDI/MDX) functionality.
15. The Ethernet switch shall be designed to provide for high availability;
MTBF is 200,000 hours or higher.

5.2 Operational Requirements

The system shall meet the following maintenance and operational requirements:
1. The equipment shall be able to perform satisfactorily without any
degradation at altitudes (0 to 3,000 meters).
2. Wherever the visual indications are provided, green color for healthy and
red or amber color unhealthy conditions shall be provided. Some other

color may be used for non-urgent alarms.


3. The design of the equipment shall not allow plugging of a module in the
wrong slot or upside down.
4. The removal or addition of any cards, except the central control cards,
shall not disrupt traffic on other cards.
5. In the event of a software fault, the manufacture shall provide patches and
firmware replacement if involved. Compatibility (backward/forward) of
the existing hardware shall be maintained with future software/firmware.
6. The Ethernet switch shall be SNMP v3 or higher to support network
management/control/and monitoring. Necessary alarms (indicators) for
indication of faults at various levels of hardware should be provided on the
individual modules.
7. A power down condition shall not cause loss of configuration.

6 Ethernet Switch Functional Specifications

6.1 Ethernet Switch and Backplane

The Ethernet switch shall comply with the following:


1. The Ethernet switch shall automatically select the operating modes of its
ports with regard to speed (10, 100, 1000 Mbps), transmission mode
(half-duplex or full duplex) and flow control.
2. The Ethernet switch shall use a non-blocking matrix design to ensure
predictable, wire speed data throughput and minimum latency features that
benefit time-critical transmission of control data.
3. The Ethernet switch shall support port mirroring to monitor traffic on
10/100 Mbps links and to view traffic statistics on all links of a VLAN.
4. The Ethernet switch shall support (Internet Group Management Protocol)
IGMP snooping to restrain broadcast or multicast traffic or prevents flood
of packets from congesting a network segment where no node is interested
in receiving a packet. The switch shall support broadcast or multicast
threshold filtering.
5. The Ethernet switch shall support 802.1q VLANs tagging.
6. The packet forwarding performance of the Ethernet switch shall be able to
meet a network data transfer rate of 14,880 pps for 10Mbps Ethernet,
148,800 pps for fast (100Mbps) Ethernet, 1,488,000 pps for Giga
(1000 Mbps) Ethernet.

7. The Ethernet switch shall support built in power diagnostics and system
diagnostics to detect hardware failures.
8. The Ethernet switch shall support a console port for the purpose of
configuration and diagnostics.
9. The Ethernet switch shall support QoS (Quality of Service) with priority
queues and strict priority scheduling to assure that the process automation
network is deterministic for its real-time applications.
10. The Ethernet Layer 3 backbone switch shall support the QoS model by
enabling classification, policing/metering, and marking functions on per
port basis at ingress and queuing/scheduling functions at egress.
11. The Ethernet switch shall support Store-and-Forward Switching architecture.
12. The Ethernet switch interface shall support ITU-G.652/G.653/G.656 single
mode fiber optic cables and/or ITU-G.651 multimode fiber optic cable.
Commentary Note:

Small-Form-Factor-Pluggable (SFP) optical transceivers with specifications


for LX (long range) and LH (long-haul) Gigabit Ethernet is preferred option.

13. The Ethernet switch shall support physical storage/retrieval of switch


configuration.
14. The Ethernet switch shall support Rate Limiting function, with a scaled
granularity of 512Kbps or lower to 10Mbps, from 0 to 1000Mbps, on its
ingress and egress ports.
15. The Ethernet switch shall support multiple topologies such as ring, mesh
and star and provide support for redundant ring architectures and multiple
upstream links.
16. The Ethernet switch shall support redundancy, dual homing, ring coupling,
and dual rings. The Ethernet switch shall support at a 25 switches
minimum size ring network topology with a network recovery time of less
than 50 ms or better.
17. The Ethernet switch shall support Link Aggregation Control Protocol
(LACP) which allows the creation of Ethernet channeling with devices that
conform to IEEE 803.3ad.
18. The Ethernet switch shall support typical throughput delays (port in to port
out) for a 1518 byte Ethernet frame of 10BASE-T: 1.3 ms, 100BASE-T:
150µs and Gigabit Ethernet: 30µs.

19. The Ethernet switch shall support typical response times needed for video
streams: 50 ms, voice streams: 20 ms; process control: 10 ms.
20. The Ethernet switch shall support and incorporate all OSI Layer 2
capabilities.
21. The Ethernet switch shall support standard Category 6 UTP cable up to
100 m distance.
22. The Ethernet switch shall support alarm relay output (logging) for port
break and power failure.
23. The Ethernet switch shall support diagnostic LED indicators for
10/100/1000 Mbps Link Activity and port failure.
24. The Ethernet switch boot up time should be less than 60 seconds.

6.2 Interface Requirements

The Ethernet switch shall support a complete range of interfaces as indicated below:
1. Remote Site Process Automation Application
a. The Ethernet switch shall have a minimum of four (4) 100BASE-TX
ports which provide connectivity to intended applications such as
SCADA, Field devices, IP phones, CCTV, etc.
b. The 100BASE-TX connector used shall be standard 8 pin RJ-45 UTP
connectors.
c. The Ethernet switch shall have a minimum of (2) Gigabit Ethernet
uplinks with the standard SC or LC connectors.
2. Backbone Site Process Automation Application
a. The Ethernet switch shall have a minimum of twenty (20) 100BASE-
TX ports which provide connectivity to SCADA, DCS, and other
systems.
b. The 100BASE-TX connectors used shall be standard 8 pin RJ-45
UTP connectors.
c. The Ethernet switch shall have a minimum of (2) Gigabit Ethernet
uplinks with the standard SC or LC connectors.
3. Serial to Ethernet Converter shall support the following:
a. Acts as serial server which offers types of interfaces selectable
between RS-232 and RS422/485, running up to 115.2 kbps.

b. Interface is 10BASE-T and TCP/IP protocols are implemented for


network communication.
c. Configuration of the adapter unit can be directly to the RS-232
configuration port or remotely through the network using TELNET
protocol or equivalent.
d. Shall be robust industrial device designed for harsh environments
wherever a high degree of availability is required for outdoor
applications.
e. Support Master/Slave multiple TCP slaves.

6.3 Network Security

6.3.1 Connection Security

Ethernet switch shall support the following security functionalities:


1. The Ethernet switch shall support password encryption or SSL to
protect against spoofing.
2. The ability to disable/enable spare maintenance ports to prevent
casual access.
3. Switch should be able to disable the web browser or Telnet access.
4. Support Radius authentication for secure access.
5. Management over SSL/SSH.

6.3.2 Access Control

The Ethernet switch shall provide the ability to change to port based
network access control.

6.4 Environmental Conditions

Ethernet switch to be installed in classified areas shall be according to SAES-B-068


and certified by Factory Mutual Research Corp. (FM) or any other association listed
in paragraph 8.2 of SAES-P-100, “Basic Power System Design Criteria.”

The vendor shall provide testing results to confirm that the equipment will
operate without disturbance when energized and subjected to an electromagnetic
field from a radiating source equivalent to a level 3 disturbance as detailed in
IEC 61000-4-3.

In particular, RF sources such as hand-held radio transceivers operating at


5 Watts within the frequency ranges, 50-174 MHz, 406-470 MHz, and
800-870 MHz and held at a distance off 1.0 meters from the equipment shall not
cause any malfunction, data corruption, or damage to the equipment.

RF sources such as hand-held radio transceivers operating at 5 Watts within the


frequency ranges, 80-174 MHz, 406-470 MHz, and 800-870 MHz and held at a
distance off 1.5 meters from the equipment shall not cause any malfunction, data
corruption, or damage to the equipment.

6.4.1 Temperature

The Ethernet switch and associated equipment/devices installed inside


the switch cabinet shall operate continuously without damage, miss-
operation, or data corruption under the environmental conditions listed
below.

Notes:
1) “Sheltered” refers to permanent, ventilated enclosures or buildings, or permanently
fixed sunshades with a top and three sides.
2) For semiconductors and any other instrumentation devices which dissipate internal
heat, an additional 15°C shall be added to the above temperatures. An example,
for “indoor air conditioned” installation, the equipment must perform at 35 + 15 =
50°C. Similarly, for the “outdoor unsheltered” case, the equipment shall be
designed for a maximum operating temperature of 65 + 15 = 80°C.
3) For the outdoor installations only, the designer can take credit for forced or passive
cooling to eliminate or reduce the 15°C heat rise. For example, if vortex coolers are
used, the heat removal capacity of the coolers may be subtracted from the
generated heat. No more than 15°C reduction in temperature will be given as
credit. The designer shall substantiate his claim by providing the support data and
calculations.

6.4.2 Humidity

Indoor humidity design basis shall be 20% to 80% relative humidity.

Outdoor design basis shall be 5% to 95% relative humidity (non-


condensing).

6.4.3 Dust Concentration

Usual airborne dust concentration is 1 mg/m³. During sandstorms, dust


concentrations may reach 500 mg/m³.

In-line with IP67, Particle sizes are as follows: 95% of all particles are less
than 20 micrometers 50% of all particles are less than 1.5 micrometers.

Equipment which is not enclosed or hermetically sealed, but is situated


outdoors offshore or outdoors near-shore shall be protected against
corrosion and operational failure due to wind-borne sea water spray and
the accumulation of wetted salt (sodium chloride).

Near-shore is defined as within one kilometer from the shoreline of the


Arabian Gulf and within three kilometers from the shoreline of the Red
Sea.

6.5 Electrical Power


1. Backbone Ethernet switch shall use AC or DC power whereas Industrial
Ethernet Switches in remote site use AC power. In cases where in the
Industrial Switch does not support AC power, a DC to AC converter shall
be provided.
2. The Ethernet switch shall incorporate operating voltages of 24 to 48 VDC
redundant power with polarity reverse protection and terminal block for
master and slave power.
3. The Ethernet switch shall support 110 VAC 120 VAC.
4. The Ethernet switch shall support proper earthling and grounding
arrangement in addition to protection against short circuit/open circuit.

6.5.1 Surge and Transient Protection

The Industrial Ethernet switch shall meet or exceed the IEC 61850-3 and
IEEE 1613 standards to ensure robustness against electrical surge and
transient conditions.

This standard requires that devices also comply with the IEC 6100-4 series.

6.5.2 EMI Generation

Each item of equipment shall not generate radiated electromagnetic


emissions in excess of one volt/meter/MHz as measured one meter from
the equipment.

6.6 Management Features

The switch shall support the following management features.

6.6.1 Remote Manageability

The Ethernet switch shall be able to be managed remotely through IP


hence simplifying the costs involved in administration.

6.6.2 Console and Out-of-band management

The Ethernet switch shall have console management access along with
provision for remote out-of-band management.

6.6.3 SNMP Protocol Feature

The Ethernet switch shall have SNMP feature and should support SNMP
version V3 Agent or higher for device monitoring and management.

6.6.4 Configuration Software


 The Ethernet switch shall support configuration management through a
GUI based software configuration utility. Configuration management
through the console is also required.
 Support of configuration on web interface shall be available.
 The Ethernet switch shall support manual configuration of both port
mode (full or half duplex) and speed selection (10 Mbps, 100 Mbps,
or 1 Gbps).

7 Network Management System


1. The NMS software shall support IEEE 802.3 compliant Ethernet networks with
SNMP manageable devices.
2. The NMS software shall monitor the link state of each port of the switch, traffic
being carried by the switch on a port-by-port basis, the internal temperature of the
switch and other SNMP data elements from the managed switches.
3. The NMS software collects SNMP information and provides calculated values
such as bandwidth utilization.
4. The NMS software shall be compliant to OPC 2.0 or higher; OPC Data Access.
5. The NMS software shall support MIB standard for collecting management
information for later retrieval by a network management protocol such as SNMP.

6. The NMS software shall support Auto-Discovery function.


7. The NMS software shall be capable of alerting user by either utilizing a dial up
modem or interfacing to short messaging/email server.

8 Warranty Requirements

Ethernet switch vendor shall guarantee support of all hardware, firmware, and software
for a period of ten (10) years from the hardware freeze date. Support shall include spare
parts and technical support. This support shall not be contingent on the customer
upgrading to later releases of software or hardware.

All the software updates shall be provided on continuous basis for a minimum period of
3 years from the date of induction of system in the Network. These updates shall
include new features and services and other maintenance updates.

9 Packaging Requirements

In addition to the requirements of Saudi Aramco, the following shipping and packaging
instructions are applicable.

Where air shipment is used for the equipment, export packing and shipping shall be
adequate for air transport and handling up to the site in Saudi Arabia.

The packing material used shall allow for adequate ventilation of internal equipment so
as not to sustain damage to the packed equipment in periods of outdoor exposure to
temperature and humidity in the environmental conditions.

10 Documentation

This section describes the general requirements for documentation to be provided.


This shall be applicable to all categories and categories of routers.

All technical documents shall be in English language both in CD-ROM and in hard
copy. The technical documents should be also accessible from remote facility.
The documents shall comprise of:
a. Equipment description documents
b. Installation, Operation and Maintenance documents
c. Repair manual

10.1 Equipment Description Documents

The following Equipment description documents shall be supplied along with


the system:

 Over-all equipment specification and description of hardware and software


 System design manuals
 Equipment layout drawings
 Cabling and wiring diagrams
 Schematic drawings of all circuits in the system with timing diagrams
wherever necessary
 Detailed specification and description of all Input/Output devices
 Adjustment procedures, if there are any field adjustable units
 Spare parts catalogue - including information on individual component
values, tolerances, etc., enabling procurement from alternative sources
 Detailed description of software describing the principles, functions, and
interactions with hardware, structure of the program and data
 Detailed description of each individual software package indicating its
functions and its linkage with the other packages, hardware, and data
program and data listings
 Graphical description of the system. In addition to the narrative description
a functional description of the system using the functional specification.

10.2 Equipment Operation Documents

The following equipment operation documents shall be available:


 Installation manuals and testing procedures
 Precautions for installation, operations and maintenance
 Operating and Maintenance manual of the system
 Safety measures to be observed in handling the equipment
 Man-machine language manual
 Fault location and troubleshooting instructions including fault dictionary
 Test jigs and fixtures required and procedures for routine maintenance,
preventive maintenance and unit/card/sub-assembly replacement
 Emergency action procedures and alarm dictionary
 All diagrams, illustrations and tables shall be consistent with the relevant
text.

10.3 Repair Manual

The Repair manual shall include:


 List of replaceable parts used
 Detailed ordering information for all the replaceable parts
 Procedure for trouble shooting and sub-assembly replacement
 Test fixtures and accessories for repair
 Systematic trouble shooting charts (fault tree) for all the probable faults with
their remedial actions.

11 Installation

All necessary interfaces, connectors, connecting cables and accessories required for
satisfactory installation and convenient operations shall be supplied. Type of connectors,
adapters to be used shall be in conformity with the interfaces defined in this document.

It shall be ensured that all testers, tools and support required for carrying out the stage
by-stage testing of the equipment before final commissioning of the network shall be
supplied along with the equipment.

All installation materials, consumables and spare parts to be supplied. All literature and
instructions required for installation of the equipment, testing and bringing it to service
shall be made available in English language.
