Definition
• Intercepts are the points at which a graph crosses either the x or y-axis.
• ‘Zeros’ of a Rational Function it is the value that will equate the function
to zero.
• Asymptote is a line that a graph approaches, but does not intersect

I. FINDING THE INTERCEPTS AND ASYMPTOTES USING A GIVEN GRAPH

By looking at the graph, we can

simply find the intercepts and
asymptotes.
On the x-axis, the graph crosses at
-4, while on the y-axis, the graph
crosses at -2. Therefore, we could
say that the x-intercept is -4 and
the y-intercept is -2 or the
coordinates (-4,0) and (0,-2)
respectively.

To find the asymptotes using

graph, simply find a vertical and
horizontal line where the graph
could approach but cannot cross
over.
In the given example, the vertical
asymptote is the line 𝑥 = 2, while
the horizontal asymptote is the
line 𝑦 = 1 .

QUestion 1:
Why do Rational Functions has asymptotes?

Some sad love stories can be related in Mathematics and one of these is the asymptote. If you
know a friend who has this kind of relationship, what can you advice to that person? Write your
answer on the given answer sheet.

II. FINDING THE INTERCEPTS AND ASYMPTOTES USING A GIVEN FUNCTION

Finding the intercepts and asymptotes using a given graph requires your analytical skill in graphing.
But finding it using a given function is a different story. It requires your skills in algebra.

A. x-intercept

How to find the x- intercept or zeros of the

function Step 1: Substitute 𝒇(𝒙) to zero
Step 2: Find the value of x

Examples
Find the x-intercepts of the given functions

1. 𝑓(𝑥) = 𝑥 − 5
𝑥+3
𝑥−5
𝑆𝑜𝑙𝑢𝑡𝑖𝑜𝑛: 0= (𝑆𝑡𝑒𝑝 1: 𝑆𝑢𝑏𝑠𝑡𝑖𝑡𝑢𝑡𝑒 𝑓(𝑥) 𝑡𝑜 𝑧𝑒𝑟𝑜)
𝑥+3
𝑥−5
(𝑥 + 3)(0) = ( ) (𝑥 + 3) (𝑆𝑡𝑒𝑝 2: 𝐹𝑖𝑛𝑑 𝑡ℎ𝑒 𝑉𝑎𝑙𝑢𝑒 𝑜𝑓 𝑥. 𝐴𝑝𝑝𝑙𝑦 𝑀𝑢𝑙𝑡𝑖𝑝𝑙𝑖𝑐𝑎𝑡𝑖𝑜𝑛 𝑃𝑟𝑜𝑝𝑒𝑟𝑡𝑦
𝑥+3
𝑜𝑓 𝐸𝑞𝑢𝑎𝑙𝑖𝑡𝑦 𝑜𝑟 𝑀𝑃𝐸 𝑡𝑜 𝑒𝑙𝑖𝑚𝑖𝑛𝑎𝑡𝑒 𝑑𝑒𝑛𝑜𝑚𝑖𝑛𝑎𝑡𝑜𝑟)
0=𝑥 −5 (𝑆𝑖𝑚𝑝𝑙𝑖𝑓𝑦)
0+5=𝑥−5 +5 (𝐴𝑝𝑝𝑙𝑦 𝐴𝑑𝑑𝑖𝑡𝑖𝑜𝑛 𝑃𝑟𝑜𝑝𝑒𝑟𝑡𝑦 𝑜𝑓 𝐸𝑞𝑢𝑎𝑙𝑖𝑡𝑦 𝑜𝑟 𝐴𝑃𝐸)
5=𝑥

Therefore, the x-intercept is at 𝑥 = 5 or at the coordinates (5,0).

𝒙𝟐 − 𝟗𝒙 + 𝟏𝟒
(
2. 𝒇 𝒙)
= 𝟒𝒙
𝑥2 − 9𝑥 + 14
𝑆𝑜𝑙𝑢𝑡𝑖𝑜𝑛: 0= (𝑆𝑡𝑒𝑝 1)
4𝑥
𝑥2 − 9𝑥 + 14
(4𝑥)(0) = ( )(4𝑥) (𝑆𝑡𝑒𝑝 2. 𝐴𝑝𝑝𝑙𝑦 𝑀𝑃𝐸 𝑡𝑜 𝑒𝑙𝑖𝑚𝑖𝑛𝑎𝑡𝑒 𝑑𝑒𝑛𝑜𝑚𝑖𝑛𝑎𝑡𝑜𝑟)
2 4𝑥
0 = 𝑥 − 9𝑥 + 14 (𝑆𝑖𝑚𝑝𝑙𝑖𝑓𝑦)
0 = (𝑥 − 7)(𝑥 − 2) (𝐴𝑝𝑝𝑙𝑦 𝐹𝑎𝑐𝑡𝑜𝑟𝑖𝑧𝑎𝑡𝑖𝑜𝑛 𝑚𝑒𝑡ℎ𝑜𝑑)

𝑥 − 7 = 0, 𝑥 − 2 = 0
𝑥 = 7, 𝑥 =2

Therefore, the x-intercepts are at 𝑥 = 7 and 2 or at the coordinates (7,0) and (2,0) respectively.

B. y- intercept

How to find the y- intercept

Step 1: Substitute 𝒙 to zero
Step 2: Find the value of 𝒇(𝒙)𝒐𝒓 𝒚

Examples
Find the y-intercepts of the given functions

1. 𝑓(𝑥) = 𝑥 − 5
𝑥+3

3
−5
𝑦= (𝐶ℎ𝑎𝑛𝑔𝑒 𝑓(0) 𝑡𝑜 𝑦)
3 5 5
Therefore, the y-intercept is at 𝑦 = − or at the coordinates (0, ).
3 3

𝒙𝟐 − 𝟗𝒙 + 𝟏𝟒

𝑓(0) =

𝑓(0) 𝑖𝑠 𝑢𝑛𝑑𝑒𝑓𝑖𝑛𝑒𝑑
Therefore, the function has no y-intercept.
C. Vertical Asymptote

How to find the Vertical Asymptote

Step 1: Take only the denominator and equate it to zero
Step 2: Find the value of x

Examples
Find the Vertical Asymptotes of the given functions

1. 𝑓(𝑥) = 𝑥 − 5
𝑥+3

𝑥 = −3
Therefore, the Vertical asymptote is the line 𝑥 = −3.

𝒙𝟐 − 𝟗𝒙 + 𝟏𝟒
𝟐. 𝒇(𝒙) =

𝒙𝟐 − 𝟗𝒙 + 𝟏𝟒
𝑆𝑜𝑙𝑢𝑡𝑖𝑜𝑛: 𝑓 (𝑥 ) =

4𝑥 = 0 (𝑆𝑡𝑒𝑝 1: 𝑇𝑎𝑘𝑒 𝑜𝑛𝑙𝑦 𝑡ℎ𝑒 𝑑𝑒𝑛𝑜𝑚𝑖𝑛𝑎𝑡𝑜𝑟 𝑎𝑛𝑑 𝑒𝑞𝑢𝑎𝑡𝑒 𝑡𝑜 𝑧𝑒𝑟𝑜)
1 1 1
( ) (4𝑥) = 0 ) (𝑆𝑡𝑒𝑝 2: 𝐹𝑖𝑛𝑑 𝑡ℎ𝑒 𝑣𝑎𝑙𝑢𝑒 𝑜𝑓 𝑥. 𝐴𝑝𝑝𝑙𝑦 𝑀𝑃𝐸 𝑏𝑦 𝑚𝑢𝑙𝑡𝑖𝑝𝑙𝑦𝑖𝑛𝑔
(4 4 4
𝑏𝑜𝑡ℎ 𝑠𝑖𝑑𝑒 𝑡𝑜 𝑒𝑙𝑖𝑚𝑖𝑛𝑎𝑡𝑒 𝑑𝑒𝑛𝑜𝑚𝑖𝑛𝑎𝑡𝑜𝑟)
𝑥= 0
Therefore, the Vertical asymptote is the line 𝑥 = 0.

D. Horizontal Asymptote

How to find the Horizontal Asymptote

Theorem: Let 𝑓(𝑥) be
n n1
a x  an1x ... a1 x  0a
f (x)  n , an  an bk  0
where k k1 0 d

k k1 1 0

If 𝑛 < 𝑘 then the line 𝒚 = 𝟎 is the horizontal asymptote.

If 𝑛 = 𝑘, then line 𝒚 = 𝒂𝒏/𝒃𝒌 , the ratio of leading coefficients, is the horizontal asymptote.
If 𝑛 > 𝑘, then the graph of the function has no horizontal asymptote.

WORD PROBLEMS. This portion requires broad understanding and ideas about mathematics.
Since we are dealing with word problems, it is necessary for a student to know how to transform
words into mathematical statements. Some situations will require students to formulate a new
formula to solve the problem.
Example 1 Suppose one painter can paint the entire house in twelve hours, and the
second painter takes eight hours to paint a similarly-sized house. How long would it take the
two painters together to paint the house?
Step 1. Given: First painter can do a job in 12 hours, so his rate is 𝟏
𝟏𝟐
Second painter can do a job in 8 hours, so his rate is 𝟏
𝟖

Step 2. Required: How long would it take the two painters together to paint the house?
Step 3. Formula: let x be the time when two painter work together to paint the house
Rate Time Work

Step 5. Conclusion:
Therefore, it would take 4.8 hours for two painters to paint the house.

The distance from Manila to Baguio is around 270 kilometers.

a. How long will it take you to get to Baguio if your average speed is 50 kilometers
per hour?
b. What should be the minimum speed of the vehicle if you only have 3 hours?

Step 1. Given: Distance from Manila to Baguio is 270 kilometers

Step 2. Required: How long will it take you to get to Baguio if your average speed is 50kph?
Step 3. Formula:

Step 5. Conclusion: Therefore, it will take 5.4 hours to get from Baguio to manila.

(b) What should be the minimum speed of the vehicle if you only have 3 hours?
Step 1. Given: Distance from Manila to Baguio is 270 kilometers
Step 2. Required: What should be the minimum speed of the vehicle if you only have
3 hours?
Step 3. Formula: (since we are finding the minimum speed, the equation becomes
inequality. Minimum implies greater than or equal)

𝒅𝒊𝒔𝒕𝒂𝒏𝒄𝒆 𝒅
