Operations in Practice: Tesco’s Store Flow Processes

Supermarket: Gaisano Minglanilla

This is where we usually shop since it’s just near to our house. It’s one of my favorite
bondings with my mother. So, I know this supermarket so well. Gaisano Minglanilla
Supermarket has two main entrance, one at the right and at the left. But most of the
customers enter at the left side of the supermarket since it is also near the baggage counter.
And beside the entrance are the carts. So, it’s very accessible. The supermarket has wide
aisles for trolleys, but other areas of the supermarket has these small shelves in between
the aisles that I don’t find attractive. I observed that people ages 30 and above took so much
time at the meat area. I think, it is because of they need to secure the freshness of the meat
since it is food. While for the teens they usually stop at the beauty products or the junk foods
area. The people ages 30 and above move past without paying attention to the wine areas
since most of the people only drink wine when there is an occasion. For teenagers, I
observed that they just past the vegetables area or the area where onions and ginger
located. Beauty products are adjacent to the left entrance of the supermarket and some
foods and frozen goods at the right entrance of the supermarket.
If I were to redesign the supermarket, I’d like to put the biscuits and junk foods area
adjacent to the entrance since the location of Gaisano Minglanilla Supermarket is very
accessible to many public and private schools’ students. I also observed that a lot of students
after their classes enter the supermarket just to purchase junk foods or drinks or some
biscuits for their snacks. In terms of their staffs, I just somehow don’t like some of their staffs
who follow our every move. Yes, I do understand them, but can they just please give us that
privacy and the chance to buy freely without hesitations. They make us feel awkward
sometimes. I also want to remove the small shelves located in between the aisles because
as I saw, it’s a problem when the 2 customers in opposite direction meet in one area. I like
it when the supermarket is spacious and when a person cannot disturb others while buying
stuffs. And lastly, the smell at the meat area. I just want to improve it or to minimize the smell
because I know there is something to improve there.
For me, I can say that supermarkets are a great help to improve my relationship with
my mom because whenever we go to supermarkets, she educates me with stuffs especially
on how to check if the meat is fresh. That I should be wise in buying products. And that I
should not prioritize my wants because in this world, the most important is our needs before
our wants.
