TITLE OF THESIS: SPORT AND RECREATION COMPLEX – A Proposed Relocation of Minglanilla

Sport Complex, Cebu City

THESIS STATEMENT:

Minglanilla has long been needing of a proper venue for sports activity. The existing sport
complex of Minglanilla is old and have too many problems like, but not limited to, the lack of facilities. The
Sport complex will cater local and national sporting events. The area was used to be called the Buat/Buad
which refers to a place where early settlers dried their sea catches. “Buwad” is a Cebuano term which
means to dry and is commonly associated with fish being laid on a plain land to get dry and so they get
the dried fish as the finish product. Formerly known as "Buat", Fr. Sanchez later then changed the name
from ‘Buat’ to Minglanilla, taken from an obscure place in Spain.

The proposed design concept shall feature the historical significance of Minglanilla, from its
formerly name “Buat / Buwad.” This facility will promote historical and cultural integration in the province.
It will provide a more efficient and functional infrastructure for multipurpose sports facility for sports events
and trainings.

PROGRAM:

We intend to promote/introduce a program that involves both Sports and Fitness Activities.

SPORTS PROGRAM:

 Adult Sports - offers adult sports who wish to train can be in this facility, this include Basketball,
Swimming, Badminton, Volleyball, etc.
 Youth Development - Young athletes who are ready to begin strength training can do so safely
with age-appropriate exercises under the supervision of an experienced and professional staff.
 Performing Athlete - High school, college, and professional athletes who are looking to
maximize their strength, power, speed, agility, fitness level, and body composition can use our
facility to get them ready for their championship season.

FITNESS CLASSES:

 Basic Training - A fun, challenging way to get your cardio and muscle workouts all in one!
 Dance Jam - Hi/low impact aerobics with a dance twist and simple choreography.
 Indoor Cycle - Group cycling is an awesome way to burn fat, increase strength, and improve
cardio fitness.
 Yoga - Integrates breath and movement, awareness and alignment, strength and flexibility.
 Zumba - A fusion of Latin and international music; easy-to-follow dance routines combined with
body sculpting moves to blast calories, burn fat and tone your body.
Our proposal will include a proper location of each activities. This includes separating activities that
require less noise from that of the activities that will generate noticeable noise; separating of indoor
activities from outdoor activities.

SITE:

It is the private proponent’s consideration for the selection of the site considering it is located at
the central area of the municipality where activities take place.

The municipality is a 1st income class, and today it has become part of the ever-growing Cebu
metropolis, thanks to its close proximity to the main center of growth, the cities of Cebu, Mandaue and
Talisay, which together with the city of Lapulapu, informally comprised of what is now called Metro Cebu.

The identified site is located in Poblacion Ward 1, Minglanilla, Cebu. It is bounded by barangay
Poblacion Ward II on the west, Poblacion Ward III on the north, barangay calajoan on the south and
barangay pakigne on the east.

The site is a corner lot with an alley (estimated to be 5m wide) on one side and a road with 10m
wide. Its nearby buildings are the public market, the minglanilla central school and its public sport
complex, and the surrounding residential houses.

Base on the observation the site won’t have any problem when it comes to flood since it has its
own drainage line.

TECHNOLOGY:

Using drywall installation to lessen the impacts coming from the sport and noise reduction.
Prefabricated Steel for low maintenance solution, fire resistance, and flexibility for modern designs. LED
lightings, consuming less energy and last longer.

CONTEXT:

It was at least 3,000 years ago that the history of sport was recorded or documented. It was for
the preparation and training for war or hunting that the early history of sport were intended for. Later there
were games that involved the throwing of spears, stakes, and rocks, and other that involves in play-
fighting.

The formal sports were introduced by the Ancient Greece, with the first Olympic Games in 776
BC that included sports such as human and chariot races, wrestling, jumping, disk and javelin throwing,
and more.

The first Greek stadium was intended for the chariot races, it was long and narrow in shape of U
or a horseshoe. The design of the Greek stadium was taken over and improved upon by the Romans,
who built two types of stadiums: the circus and the amphitheatre. The amphitheatre, one of the most
characteristic of all Roman buildings, was oval or round in plan and was completely enclosed on all sides.
Intended for gladiatorial contests, in which the precise dimensions of the field were of slight importance,
the amphitheatre was designed to afford maximum seating capacity and optimum visual facility for
spectators.

The Latin word arena literally means sand, because the stage where gladiators fought was
covered by a thin layer of sand.
Today, the word arena conjures images of sports or musical events
