What Is the United Nations (UN)?

The United Nations, commonly referred to by its initial: UN, is an international


nonprofit organization formed in 1945 to increase political and economic cooperation
among its member countries.

The United Nations was a way to reduce international tensions, promote human
rights, and reduce the possibility of other large-scale conflicts

There are 193 members of the U.N. The United States recognizes 195 countries.

The UN has 4 main purposes


 To keep peace throughout the world;
 To develop friendly relations among nations;
 To help nations work together to improve the lives of poor people, to conquer
hunger, disease and illiteracy, and to encourage respect for each other’s rights
and freedoms;
