ANTI-SMOKING ADVERTISEMENT: CAN HELP IN THE IMPROVEMENT OF

ACADEMIC PERFORMANCE AMONG MBASH MAIN GRADE 10 STUDENTS

SY. 2019 - 2020

ABSTRACT

Anti-Smoking Advertisement is an advertisement that gives awareness to the people

to stop or quit smoking. Smoking is the act of inhaling and exhaling the fumes of burning
plant material. Cigarettes is composedconsists of chemicals that make up the solid
phase are tiny solid particles including phenols, nicotine, and naphthalene that why
smoking is bad for your health. One of the major effects of smoking is the cancer and it
can lead you to death. Prevention is better than cure so the government increase the
price of the cigarettes and probihited the teenagers from buying cigarettes. Anti-Smoking
Advertisements can also help to prevent the smoking because it gives awareness to the
people to quit smoking and if they didn’t it will make a bad effect in the body and health.

In the students, we conducted a survey to know if the Grade 10 students of MBASH-

Main S.Y. 2019-2020 is aware about smoking and its effects. The respondents were
selected purposive as well as systematic sampling approaches within the descriptive
survey outputs. The result says that many students of grade 10 is aware of smoking and
its effect. In Improving their Academic Performances the school should take charge in
banning the cigarettes and teaching educational campaign or anti-smoking
advertisements in the students for them to be aware and it can also help the students to
be more focus on their studies.

The parent’s can help their children to avoid the from smoking. Talk with their teens
because teens really do value the opinions of their parents. Monitor screen time because
many teens exposed to bad cigarettes ads, especially those for e- cigarettes, report
seeing them on the internet and TV.
INTRODUCTION

Smoking is the act of inhaling and exhaling the fumes of burning plant material. A variety
of plat materials are smoked, including marijuana and hashish, but the act is mostly
commonly associated with tobacco as smoked in a cigarette, cigar or pipe. They say that
one of the benefits of smoking is the nicotine in tobacco smoked is an appetite
suppressant that’s why it triggers behavior modification that prompts smokers to snack
less. Many people smoke because it is there way to take away the negative moods and
stress in daily life. They also find that smoking can boost your confidence in some
particular way.

In the Philippines, tobacco affects a sizable minority of the population. The Philippines
was the 15th largest consumer of tobacco in the world in 2002 and currently has one of
the highest smoking rates in Asia, as well as some of the lowest cigarette prices. The
chances are high the Filipino children, with the ages between 11 to 16, have already
tried smoking cigarettes. The probability that a child has already lighted his first stick or
worse, a full blown smoke is even greater when members of his family are smoking too.
And then, of course, there is peer pressure. In addition, in adolescence, the temptation of
experimenting and becoming a daily smoker is an important risk factor for sustainable
consumption and dependence. smoking is a learned behavior, an “allowed” and
supported learning to varying degrees by the culture that surround the individual: A
learning that leads to dependence. The risk is even greater since most of these
adolescents are strongly influenced by their friends, classmates and their perception of
what is acceptable or not in a group regarding smoking. Having smokers among one’s
friends or classmates is one of

the most powerful and most consistently identified predictors of teen smoking. Peer
influence is normative, but not injunctive. Wheras adolescents would actually take a
direct pressure to smoking as an aggression and would break friendship bonds, young
people feel an internal pressure and start smoking not only for fear of losing contact with
smoking friends, but also to achieve a sense of autonomy and independence.
Schools are uniquely powerful position to play a major role in reducing the serious
problem of smoking and the other tobacco use by kids. The students should focus on
their studies for the improvement of their academic performances. So for schools to
effectively prevent and reduse youth tobacco use among their students , they must
create an environment that encourages anti-tobacco beliefs and behaviors. Forbid
tobacco use by students, staff and visitors on all school grounds and at all school
sponsored events. Provide comprehensive tobacco prevention education. provide
program-specific training for teachers. Involve parents and families in school efforts to
prevents tobacco use. Offer interactive tobacco-free projects for students. Adopt a firm
school policy of not accepting any funding, curricular or other materials from any tobacco
company. Evaluate the school’s tobacco free programs at regular intervals. Provide
educational anti-smoking advertisements. Thus, I can say that the anti-smoking
advertisement and campaign can help the students to be aware about smoking and for
them to be more focus on their academic performances.

OBJECTIVES:

The significance or essence of this study/research is that to focus on how the

anti-smoking advertisement can help the Grade 10 students of M.B. Asistio Sr. High
school-Main S.Y. 2019-2020 when it comes to decrease the number of students that are
using cigarettes and to lower the percentage of adolescence that is relieved of vices.

SCOPE AND LIMITATIONS:

The research is focusing on helping the students of Grade 10 of MBASHS

Main S.Y 2019-2020 to improve their academic performance by showing the anti-
smoking advertisement and campaign for them to be aware about smoking.

REVIEW OF LITERATURE:

Many anti-smoking campaigns have been launched all over the world and
earlier studies have examined the impact of campaign on change in smoking behavior
using aggregate level data. (O’Keefe, 1971) points out in the population-based statistical
survey data, that the influence of such mass media campaign is quite limited. 1). In
California, (Hu, T. W., H. Y. Sung, and T. E. Keeler, 1995ab.), have tried to identify the
separate effect of anti-smoking media campaign on tobacco smoking, with the industry’s
magazine advertising response and with controls for tobacco tax policy .2 – 3). As per
their findings media campaign reduced per capita cigarette consumption by 7.7 packs
per 100 packs during the period of (1989-1992), they have also suggested that it is
necessary to conduct intensive survey studies about how such media campaign
influences individual behavior, including individual exposure to message perception of
media campaign and change in smoking behavior and attitude. (Stavrinos, V. G., 1987)
studies the case of Greece and found that health warnings conveyed by anti-smoking
campaigns reduced the cigarette consumption by 7.3% in short run and by 13.5% in the
long run, which might be more effective than tobacco policy. 4). (Mattila, S. A. 1999)
suggested that anti-smoking advertisements with emotional appeals generated higher
awareness compared to rational and just informative advertisements. 5). (Biener, L., G.
McCallum-Keeler, and A. L. Nyman, 2000) demonstrated that both adult smokers and
non-smokers in Massachusetts were highly exposed to anti-smoking media campaign,
but the effectiveness of the campaign was mostly perceived by either non-smokers,
quitters or smokers with intention to quit smoking. This stated that only those people who
had propensity to quit perceive anti-smoking advertisements as an effective advocate,
whereas the majority of smokers may have more awareness of smoking’s harmful effects
but would not change their behaviors.6). However (McVey, D. and J. Stapleton, 2000)
studied the effectiveness of anti-smoking television campaign with a controlled trial in
England, and find out that UK anti-smoking advertisement has a significant negative
effect on smoking prevalence through motivating current smokers to quit and preventing
former smokers from relapsing.7). (Meyrick, D. J. (2001).) mentioned that the message
of advertising became more effective if the target audience experienced a feeling of
involvement towards anti-smoking advertisements, besides, youth might have optimistic
bias on them. This was majorly because they felt overconfident about themselves and
had self-esteem which might cause the failure of anti-smoking advertising to reach them
due to their optimism bias. 8). (Wolburg, M. J. (2001).) mentioned that social anti-
smoking advertising was usually not effective, majorly because advertising messages
generally encouraged consumption rather than discouraging consumption behavior due
to media being the wrong platform for promoting anti consumption message like “don’t
smoke”. 9). While studying (Florida’s ‘Truth’) anti-tobacco campaign which utilizes the
natural teenage rebellious phase to allow them to rebel them against smoking, (Sly DF,
Hopkins RS, Trapido E, Ray S. (2001)), reveal that these awareness campaigns not only
have a direct effect, but also an indirect effect on smoking behavior of an individual,
which goes through its effects on perceived influence of message theme and individual
anti-smoking attitudes. 10). In addition to their study (Farrelly, M. C., et al., 2002), found
that self-reported exposure to ‘Truth’ tobacco advertisements significantly changes
youth’s attitude and behavior towards smoking. 11). However these studies are mainly
based on traditional or descriptive regression analysis of some subgroups in the
population and don’t have enough control for unobserved individual heterogeneity which
could possibly determine the recall of exposure, smoking attitude and behavior. (Hogg,
K. M., & Garrow, J. (2003).) explained that different gender and age may also influence
the response towards the advertisement; this is majorly because male and female
audience perceives same messages differently. 12). (Peters, J. R., Kelder, H. S.,
Prokhorov, A., Amos, C., Yacoubian, S. G., Agurcia, A. C., Murray, N., & Shegog, R.
(2005)), tried to explore the relationship different races’ exposure to anti-smoking
advertisement, but the study found no difference between race and anti-smoking
advertisements. 13). (Smith, H. K. & Stutts, A. M. (2006). ) conducted a study to evaluate
the influence of individual factors on the effectiveness of the message content in anti-
smoking advertisements aimed at adolescents, the results showed that both message
and content namely health and cosmetic content were influenced by three individual
factors which are gender, grade level and ethnicity. 14).

respondents.
CONCLUSION / DISCUSSION

In this study, Although most of the students evaluated were aware of the harmful
effects of smoking still some of the students are not fully aware about smoking and its
effects. Cigarettes smoking by youth students and young adults has immediate adverse
health consequences, inclusing addiction, and accelerates the development of chronic
disases across the full life course. Prevention efforts must focus on adolescents and
young adults who became daily smokers nearly all first use of cigarettes occurs by 15
years of age. One of the action to prevent the students to smoke is that we can use is
the schools to prevent them from smoking. The school should forbid tobacco use by
students, staff and visitors on all school grounds and at all school sponsored events.
Provide comprehensive tobacco prevention education. Provide program-specific training
for teachers. Involve parents and families in school efforts to prevent tobacco use. Offer
interactive tobacco-free projects for students. Adopt a firm school policy of not accepting
any funding, curricular or other materials from any tobacco company. Evaluate the
school’s tobacco free programs at regular intervals. Provide educational anti-smoking
advertisements. The Anti-smoking campaign can help the students to be aware and to
know the bad effects of smoking. The anti-smoking can make a big help for the students
especially the hard or somewhat horror anti-smoking ads so that the students will be
scared to try cigarettes and for them to encouraged other students whose smoking to
quit their vices.

The Adolescents and young adults are uniquely susceptible to social and
environmental influences to use tobacco. Socioeconomics factors and educational
attainment influence the development of youth smoking behavior. The adolescents most
likely to begin to use tobacco and progress to regular use are those who have lower
academic achievement. Some of the students has low grades because the students
whose smoking encourage them to smoke that why their studies is affected by their
vices. This anti-smoking ads and campaign will help the students to focus on their
academic performances because the school will also take in charge of it.

The study / research concludes that the Anti-Smoking Advertisement can help the
Grade 10 students of MBASH-Main S.Y. 2019-2020 in improving their academic
performaces.
