Lesson 1: What are integers?

Integers are the set of whole positive and negative numbers.

Look at the numbers below circle the ones that are integers

6 -0.25 0

-1 0.5 -7 10.5

Integers can be represented on a number line. Take a look at the one below.

Which of the circled integers is the largest and which is the smallest?

Activity:
Lesson 2: Addition of integers −5+8+(−2)

It is important to note that opposite signs cancel each other out and that negative Activity: Simplify each of the following
numbers are written in brackets when an operation such as addition or subtraction
1. −7+(−5)
comes before it.
−5+5=5+ (−5 ) =0
10 and -10 are additive inverse. In addition, the order is unimportant. Let’s prove this!
Blue represents positive and Red represent negative. 2. 9+ (−5 )+(−6)

When blue and red come together they cancel each other leaving 0 tiles. 3. −4+ (−5 ) +(−2)
Lesson 3: Subtraction of Integers
Complete each operation below:
Let’s try this one!
5−4=¿ 5−0=
−7+5
5−3=¿ 5−(−1 )=¿
5−2 = 5−(−2 )=¿
5−1 = 5−(−3 )=¿
−7+5
¿−2
What do you notice about the subtraction of a negative number?
What about 5+(−7) would the answer be the same or different? Why?

Further Practice! Try modelling this using the tiles your teacher provided. Discuss
your solution with a partner.

Let’s examine these two below: Use the number line to help you.
1. −6−4 2. −5+(−7)−(−9)

2. 4− (−6 )

3. 20−7+(−8)

3. What do you notice about the order when subtracting?

4. −15−(−18 )−6
Lesson 4: Mixed subtraction and addition

Activity: Simplify each of the following.

Lesson 5: Multiplication and Division of Directed Numbers

Rules:
Activity:
3 ×2
3. −7 ×5

2+2+2 there are three copies of positive 2

3 ×(−2)

4. −4 ×(−5)×(−3)

−2+ (−2 ) + (−2 ) =−6

Try the following:

1. −4 ×(−5)

2. 6 ×(−3)
Lesson 6: Representing Algebraic expressions:

In the expression 2 x+3, 2x is a term and 3 is the second term. Terms are separated
using either an addition of subtraction sign. The number 2 in front of the x is called a
coefficient. A coefficient tells us how many of the term there are.

Look at each expression below and identify the number of terms: 5−2 x can be represented as

−3 x+ 2 y −6

2 xy+ 3 x +2 y−5

Modelling expressions:
Model the following using the tiles your teacher provided:
Represents positive x 1. 3 x−2

Represents negative x 2. −5 x+ 4

Please note the value of

3 x+ 2 can be represented as x is unknown and as
such cannot be added to
or subtracted from a
constant. Additionally, x
and y represent two
different unknowns and
canned be added or
subtracted further.
Lesson 7: Substitution
Using numbers to replace unknowns in algebraic expressions
Look at the diagram below

Additional practice!

Find the value of each of the following by substituting the given number to replace
the unknown.

1. 3 x−5 where x=(−3)

2. −2 x+7 where x=(−5)

3. 2 x+3 y +5 where x=(−3 )∧ y=4

Lesson 8 solving simple linear equations:
An equation has both a left hand side and a right hand side separated by an equal sign.
In an equation both sides are balanced. The aim of any equation is to solve for the
unknown by getting it by itself on one side of the equation. This is normally done by
doing the reverse operation. The reverse of addition is subtraction and the reverse of
multiplication is division.
x +3=5
2 x−3=5
Example 2:
Equations containing subtraction:

2 x−5=−1

x
2 x−5+5=−1+ 5
Add 5 to both sides

Describe the following equation in words, then solve it.

2 x=4 Activity
Solve each of the following equations;

x 1. 3 x−5=10

2. 2 x+7=−1

Divide into 2 equal

x=2 parts
