DESIGN NOTES
The Kitty Sleep Mask makes a great handmade gift! It’s over-sized fit ensures little light will come
through at the edges. This mask can be sewn in a variety of fabrics. They are addicting to make!

PRINTING & ASSEMBLING YOUR PDF PATTERN
1.   For best results, open and print your file using Adobe Reader (available here
https://get.adobe.com/reader/ ).
2.   Print Pattern on US Letter or A4 Paper (if using A4, select “US Letter” Page Size in your Print
Options/Advanced Options). Before you print, make sure you have selected “no scaling”
or print “Actual Size” (Fig.1).

CUTTING YOUR FABRIC

1.   Cut out your pattern piece and pin it to your fabric. Cut 1 Piece of exterior fabric, 2
pieces of batting, 1 optional piece of black fabric for interlining, and 1 piece of lining.

NOTE: When using lightweight fabric like satin, it is helpful to also fuse a layer of lightweight interfacing to
the wrong side of the fabric for stability.

Design Option: Add a lace overlay by cutting out a separate layer of lace. Baste it to the exterior layer
before proceeding with the following steps. Experiment with angling the lace or adding a scalloped edge
detail.

PREPARING THE STRAP
1.   Cut a length of elastic 11” (27cm) long, or to a length that fits your head. You may wish to lengthen
or shorten the strap depending on how resilient and stretchy your elastic is.

FIGURE 4

2.   Baste the elastic onto either side of the sleep mask exterior. The right side of the elastic should be
facing the right side of the fabric.

SEWING THE MASK

1.   Begin by layering all of the pieces of the sleep mask together. It should go as follows:
a.   Batting
b.   Exterior (right side up)
c.   Lining (right side down, facing the exterior fabric)
d.   Batting
e.   Optional interlining

FIGURE 6

2.   Pin these layers together.

3.   Using a 3/8” seam allowance, stitch around the perimeter of the sleep mask, sewing through
all the layers. Do not stitch between the area where the two dots are on the pattern piece! The
top needs to be left open so we can turn it right side out.

4.   Trim back the Batting closest to the Exterior fabric. Trim as close to the stitching line as possible.

5.   Flipping the mask over, trim back both the interlining (if used) and other piece of batting. As in
the previous step, trim it back as close to the stitching line as possible. Be careful not to cut any
of your stitches!

FIGURE 10

6.   Clip back excess fabric over the points of each ear, being careful to not clip any stitches.

7.   Carefully slash any inward curing seam allowance, and notch any outward curving seam
allowance. This reduced bulk and allows the seam to curve when turned right-side out. Slash
and notch as close to the stitching line as possible, without snipping any of your stitches.

FIGURE 12

FINISHING
1.   Turn the mask right-side out through the opening at the top. Use a sturdy pin to pull the ears to
a point, or push to a point using blunt scissors. Press the mask flat with a warm iron and turn the
seam allowance of the opening towards the inside of the mask. Using a needle and thread,
slipstitch the opening closed.
