Rules and Regulations

People’s Education Society’s ‘Adv. Balasaheb Apte College of Law’ is hosting the first
edition of the Sr. Adv. S.R. (Baba) Chitnis Memorial State Level Moot Court Competition,
2018 on Saturday, 10th March, 2018. This event is hosted in the fond memory of Late Sr.
Adv. S.R. Chitnis (widely known as Baba Chitnis), a distinguished legal luminary who
practiced criminal law for over 50 years. This competition mainly commemorates his
contribution towards the legal fraternity. The competition shall be held in both English
and Marathi languages. Both the Moot Courts shall be conducted simultaneously and
hence the colleges are invited to send two teams of two speakers each, one for the
English Moot and/or one for the Marathi Moot. Colleges may participate in either
English or Marathi or both Moots.

1. DRESS CODE:

The dress code shall be Advocate’s attire (black and white formals for gentlemen &
black and white western or Indian formals for ladies).

Advocate’s gown and white band are prohibited. Participants shall make their own
provisions to comply with the dress code.

2. ELIGIBILITY:

Bona-fide LL.B. students pursuing 3 or 5 years degree courses during the academic year
2017-2018 are eligible to participate. The students must be deputed by their respective
colleges.

3. TEAM COMPOSITION:

Each participating college/ university shall send either one or two teams. One team for
the English Moot and/or one for the Marathi Moot.

Each team shall consist of two members (Speaker 1 & 2). This number cannot be
modified under any circumstances.
4. REGISTRATION:

Participants must note that only 16 teams will be registered to participate in the
competition on a first-come-first-serve basis.

The Registration Form is attached herewith. The participants shall register their entries
by emailing the duly filled and scanned Registration Form (soft copy) on or before 26th
February, 2018, from their college official email-id to mootabacl@gmail.com.
Thereafter, the participants shall receive an acknowledgement on successful submission
of their registration.

The first 16 teams shall receive a confirmation email for participation on first-come-first-
serve basis.

The Registration Fee shall be Rs. 500/- payable by Demand Draft in favour of ‚Adv.
Balasaheb Apte College of Law‛. (The registration fee shall apply to entries in both
English & Marathi Competitions, whether the college participates in both or not.)

On receipt of the confirmation of participation, a hard copy of the Registration Form


duly signed by the Principal/ Prof. In Charge, of the respective college, along with the
Demand Draft should reach; People’s Education Society’s Adv. Balasaheb Apte College
of Law, Principal N. M. Kale Marg, Gokhale Road (South), Dadar (West), Mumbai - 400
028. Tel ” 022-24370421, by post or courier on or before 3rd March, 2018.

No change in the names of participants shall be permitted after the receipt of the
Registration Form, except at the sole discretion of the organizers.

Teams should clearly mention the participants’ names, contact number, year of study,
and name of the institution along with other requirements.

The college shall not provide travelling expenses to the participants. However, breakfast,
lunch and refreshments shall be provided to the participants.

5. MEMORIALS:

Softcopies of memorial from each side, (Petitioner and Respondent), are required to be
submitted to the organisers on mootabacl@gmail.com on or before 5th March, 2018.
Participants are expected to submit hard copies of the memorials by courier or post/
hand delivery by 7th March, 2018.
The cover page of the Memorial must follow colour scheme i.e. Blue for petitioner/
appellant and red for respondent.

Typed on A4 size paper with one side printing not exceeding 30 pages, font size 12
(Times New Roman) line spacing of 1.5.

Memorials ought to be in language of the court. Please note that teams participating for
Marathi Moot Court Competition must submit the memorial in Marathi only.

The memorial must contain:

iii. Statement of Jurisdiction

iv. Statement of Facts

v. Statement of Issues

vi. Summary of Arguments

vii. Arguments advanced

viii. Prayers

6. Arguments

Participants shall get to argue from only one side, i.e. Appellants/ Petitioner or
Respondents in the preliminary round.

Participants will be awarded points for memorials, arguments, ability to respond to


Judge’s queries, reliance on case laws, etc.

Each team shall get a total of 20 minutes to argue the case in the preliminary round.
This time includes the time for rebuttal. The speakers shall be at liberty to distribute the
time amongst themselves but a single speaker would not be permitted to address the
Court for more than 12 minutes.
The 4 teams that secure the highest points in the preliminary rounds will proceed to the
Semi Final round. In case two or more teams secure the same number of marks, then
the team which has scored higher memorial marks will be qualified for the next round.

The Semi Final round will be a knockout round. The two teams which are declared
winners proceed to the final rounds.

The time limit for arguments in the Semi Final round shall be same as that in the
preliminary round.

In the Final Round, the teams shall get to argue for a period of 30 minutes which shall
include the time reserved for rebuttal. No single speaker shall be permitted to address
the Court for more than 20 minutes.
