Hello Fellow Members, Though coincidental, it
is interesting that the Chinese New Year of the
Metal Rat has accompanied
a plague that affects
the Lungs.
Physically, it affects the Lungs but COVID-19
has also had a massive impact on our daily
lives and livelihoods and while there is
speculation - 3-6months, we really don’t
know an end date that will see us return fully
to our new normal.
I know many of our members are struggling.
The fear of practicing in case you have an
infected patient, the decrease in patients,
harassment for some who are legitimately
earning their living while helping others and
financial uncertainty are just some of the
issues we are all dealing with.
Experiencing grief due to loss of life as we
knew it, is natural and we know grief is the
emotion associated with the Lungs and
weakens Lung Qi then adding in autumn,
which we also know is the season that
can lead to feelings of sadness, it makes
it very important to look after yourself
mentally, emotionally and physically. Try
keeping yourself busy perhaps by furthering
your knowledge or skill in something
that interests you, maintaining and even
increasing connections with family, friends
and colleagues through social media or
calling and actually speaking with them.
Being outdoors in your garden, exercising or

walking. Exercise is permissible with another
person as long as you know they are well.

Similar to "what comes up must come down",
this proverb points out that: things reverse
when they reach their extremes. It's from the
18th century novel "A Dream of
Red Mansions".
The latest statistics seem to bear this out.
The Government initiatives have helped to
lessen the anxiety with money available for
self-employed, sole traders and also some
protection from the threat of eviction due to
the inability to pay rent.
The Board and AACMA Office have also
been busy trying to support members in any
way that is necessary.
Supporting Members
through COVID -19
Many letters have been sent including to the
Treasurer Josh Frydenberg emphasising the
need for financial support for self-employed,
sole traders.
Government directives have seen the closure
of many businesses to stop the spread of
the Coronavirus. All of the health directives
implemented by the Government are made
from information supplied by the CMO and
Chief Health Officers in each State
and Territory.
Because of his ability to inform Government,
a letter was written to Prof Brendan Murphy
CMO reiterating the part that Chinese
medicine can play during this time, especially
in the management of chronic pain. Also
taking some of the strain off the already
burdened general practitioners, we put
forward the case that Chinese medicine
practitioners, as a qualified, registered and
valuable health resource should remain open
for practice.
Certainly, it is up to the individual
practitioner to continue to practice if
they choose.
This letter also advised the CMO of the
integrated approach used in China to treat
people infected with Coronavirus. AACMA
offered to supply any necessary information
regarding the use of acupuncture and
Chinese herbal medicines in the treatment
given to the population of Wuhan. Many
studies are currently underway but as none
are complete, we have no scientific evidence
that the Federal Health Department will
accept to support any of the Chinese
medicine herbal formulas that have been
reported to have been used for the treatment
of COVID-19 patients in China.
A submission on behalf of Chinese medicine
was made to the Office of Health Protection.
This department within the Federal
Department of Health is responsible for the
distribution of Personal Protective Equipment
(PPE) through their Stock Pile
Operations arm.
The submission stated that while AACMA
understood that priority be given to frontline
practitioners treating or testing COVID-19
patients, we requested that preference also
be given to Chinese medicine practitioners as
allied health practitioners who were involved
in delivering care at the primary health level.
Approaches have also been made to
manufacturers of hand sanitiser to try
to establish a supply chain for AACMA
members who are still in practice.
Through the eNews members have received
information sheets on infection control and
safe practice providing ways to minimise
any risk of spreading Coronavirus while
maintaining practice, summary of financial
support packages and useful web links and a
guide to providing a telehealth service.
As the Chinese medicine representative
on the Professions Reference Group which
is made up of representatives from all the
registered health professions and conducted
by AHPRA and also to the CMBA, I requested
that leniency be shown to practitioners who

are unable to meet their CPD requirements or
First Aid renewal due to the social distancing
regulations and that consideration be given
to lower registration fees for this year.
The CMBA has said that while they
would like practitioners to do their best at
maintaining their CPD for the year, there will
be no penalty if all points weren’t achieved.
Lockdown measures have also impacted on
the ability to renew First Aid.
CEO Paul Stadhams and I attended a
meeting with the CMBA, AHPRA and the
other Associations and it was advised at that
meeting, that practitioners are required to
renew their First Aid as soon as the training
providers are able to recommence courses.
We were also informed at that meeting
that all the Boards of the National Health
Professions Are to meet in April to discuss
registration fees.
The private health funds have also been
approached regarding first aid renewal and
CPD, as these are part of their requirements
to maintain provider status.
The funds that come under the ARHG have
given a 3month extension for practitioners
who are unable to renew their first aid. We
are waiting on responses from the
other funds.
AACMA had also asked the CMBA to clarify
the classification of Chinese Medicine
as an allied health profession. With this
endorsement, it was hoped that the public
and other agencies would understand that
as a registered health profession, we are
primary health care providers and thus an
essential service.
This would also have been beneficial in the
ongoing lobbying of health funds to pay
rebates at an allied health level rather than a
natural therapy.
Unfortunately, despite being the regulator of
our profession, the CMBA just talked around
the definition of allied health at the meeting
without any commitment to upholding
the Federal Government and National
Regulation and Accreditation Scheme’s
classification of Chinese medicine as
allied health.
AACMA will continue to work at achieving
full recognition of Chinese medicine as an
allied health profession and not just as a
classification on the National Regulation and
Accreditation Scheme webpage.
With more practitioners providing a health
service using telehealth/virtual
health consultations,
AACMA is preparing a submission to Private
Healthcare Australia (PHA), the peak body
for Australian Private Health Insurance
requesting that these consultations attract a
health fund rebate.
The AACMA website has a dedicated
COVID-19 page that is regularly updated
and added to so that our members can find
information specifically tailored to
their needs.

When the world and life settles and returns
to the new normal, AACMA has already
devised a strategy to raise public awareness
of AACMA members and the benefits of
Chinese medicine.
We have a filmed another community service
announcement that informs the public on the
drug free benefits of pain management
using acupuncture.
The projected release date is September,
but can be brought forward if government
restrictions are eased to enable the public to
move about more freely and without fear.
CPD
With the need to cancel AACMAC due to
government directives prohibiting public
gatherings and social distancing measures,
we have been working on providing quality,
easily accessed and inexpensive CPD
for members.
Partnering with Healthy Seminars and China
Books, AACMA has been able to secure a
large library of online learning for members
at discounted rates.
Recordings of presentations from AACMAC
Melbourne 2019 and previous AACMACs will
also be available for members’ on
going education.

The AACMA office currently, is organising
either a live stream or Zoom event with
Greg Bantick leading a self-care session
for practitioners including meditation and
therapeutic discussion. Please check your
emails for advice on attending the free event.
1 December 2019 saw a change in the CPD
requirements with a mandatory 5CPD points
to be gained from practitioner interaction.
This is in addition to the 4CPD points for
professional issues.
Practitioners are now required to identify
their learning goals, how they have achieved
them with the CPD they have chosen to
undertake through the year and reflect on
how they will improve their practice based on
what they have learned.
• This should be documented and saved in
a folio that could be presented if audited
by AHPRA.

CPD activities per year that:
• seek to improve patient outcomes
and experiences
• draw on best available evidence and
accepted knowledge that is supported by

staying up to date

• Include four hours of CPD related to
professional issues.
Chinese medicine practitioners can be
registered in one or more of three divisions.
The Board therefore requires CPD relevant
to each of the divisions in which practitioners
are registered”.
Government Lobbying
CDM
This is in a holding pattern. With the Minister
for Health and the Chief Medical Officer
(CMO) completely tied up formulating
and implementing the necessary response
to avert the spread of the Coronavirus
throughout Australia, our lobbying for the
Medicare Chronic Disease Management
(CDM) has come to a halt for the time being.
The lobbying will recommence as soon
as practicable.
Silver lining…..
塞翁失马，焉知非福。(Sài Wēng shī
mǎ, yān zhī fēi fú. 'Sai Weng [legendary
old man's name] lost horse, how know not
blessing'.) — Blessings come in disguise.
According to the book "Huainanzi — Lessons
of the Human World", an old man living in a
border region lost his horse and people came
to comfort him. But he said, "This may be a
blessing in disguise, who knows?" Indeed, the
horse later returned to the man and brought
him a better horse.
COVID-19 has brought with it extraordinary
changes that have altered the way we have
been living and working.
It has generated a community spirit in a lot
of people across the world and has seen
kindness spreading where it has been lost.
Small acts of kindness generate a flow on
effect as feelings of gratitude inspire further
acts of kindness.
Parties across balconies in Italy and Spain,
checking on our elderly and doing their
shopping, free deliveries from local bakeries
as bread shelves in supermarkets lay empty,
free online entertainment and concerts from
superstars all help to lift spirits and show
that if we band together and think of others
rather than just ourselves, we shall prevail.
Social media, which has been the cause of a
lot of pain with scamming and bullying and
fraud, is now enabling people to connect like
never before especially while in isolation.
Technology enables the delivery of telehealth
providing us as practitioners a new option in
the way we can practice.
The earth is healing, with dolphins seen
swimming in Sardinia’s port of Cagliari, fish
visible in the now-clear water of Venice’s
canals, and blue skies over China. The
pictures from space show a reduction in
global air pollution. This improved air quality
will have a beneficial impact on our health.

The drastic reductions in CO2 emissions
with factories shut down, fewer cars on the
roads and planes in the sky show what can be
achieved in keeping our planet and air clean.
Hopefully industries and governments can
work together to implement a cleaner,
greener and more cost and energy efficient
way to operate while maintaining the health
of our planet and her people.
The scientific community has been working
together on treatments and potential cure
and also to produce a vaccine.
Countries have been coming together
to provide help with Russia delivering
ventilators to New York for the sick and
from China, personal protective equipment
especially masks for the frontline health
workers who are at personal risk every day.
Australian Gin and Rum makers are
producing ethanol, a raw material for the
manufacture of hand sanitisers that is in
great demand.
All this provides us with hope and the hope
is that the kindness and community spirit
continues when the world returns to its
new normal.

Beyond COVID-19:
Out of fear and into the future
T he words ‘coronavirus’ and
‘COVID-19’ have dominated
the headlines for several
months now and, in many ways,
we’re slowly becoming accustomed
to this new – albeit highly
restrictive – way of life.
For some, social distancing and staying
home has been little more than an
inconvenience; but for many, the changes
have been devastating. According to the

Australian Bureau of Statistics, around 1.6
million Australians had lost their income by
the end of the first week of tough lockdown
laws in early April, and it’s a figure that
could still rise.
There is no denying it’s been an incredibly
challenging time, so it may seem somewhat
flippant to recall the old adage ‘there’s light
at the end of the tunnel’. But in spite of the
horrors we’re faced with every day as a result
of the virus – from rising global death rates
and infection statistics to unemployment,
declining mental health, and increased
domestic violence to name but a few – a time
will come when we will be able to welcome in
a new kind of normal in a
post-COVID19 world.
For those within the Chinese Medicine
industry, there are already signs of what’s
to come when we finally win the fight
against this disease – and the news is good.
“I don’t think it’s going to be long lasting
because once people feel secure again,
they will come back,” says Waveny Holland,
AACMA OFFICIAL MEMBER MAGAZINE 9

might potentially keep their distance for a
little while, but as the numbers of infections
start dropping, people will come back to the
therapies they know work for them.”
In the meantime, AACMA is already
looking to the future, with plans to release
a community service announcement (CSA)
to help raise awareness of Chinese medicine
in the public forum when life starts to
regain some sense of normalcy. “It was
initially going to be released in February,”
Waveny tells, “but now we’ve held it over for
September or October so that, when people
are eventually coming out of this isolation,
there’s a whole campaign to promote
Chinese medicine and raise the industry
profile in the public so that they know that
they’re safe.”
The 2020 CSA, Waveny adds, has been
a work in progress since before the global
pandemic hit – but while it doesn’t focus
on the worldwide health crisis, its message
will be just as relevant, if not more so, when
it goes live. The campaign is set to remind
the public of the efficacy of acupuncture as
a pain relief treatment, and if the results of
last year’s successful campaign are anything
to go by, it will provide a major boost to the
industry in the aftermath of the COVID-19
crisis. Following the release of 2019’s CSA,
starring Nick Bennett, AACMA noted a
substantial increase in people visiting
the ‘Find a Practitioner’ service on the
association’s website, as well as anecdotal
evidence from many members about an
increase in interest in their services.
The planned release of the CSA is just one
way AACMA will help breathe new life into
the Chinese medicine industry in Australia
when the novel coronavirus comes under
control. In the meantime, Waveny has been
urging members to “hang in there”, noting
that AACMA is here to support you
through this.

you have in place
“When these lockdown restrictions
start being relaxed a bit, my advice to
practitioners is to get online and get in
touch with your patients. Let them know,
‘I’ve reopened for practice and these are
the things I’ve put in place to make sure
that you continue to be safe,’” she suggests,
explaining that keeping these lines of
communication open will be key to getting
back on track as quickly as possible when
physical distancing restrictions begin
to ease.
Rather than simply letting them know
you’re open for business, she adds, it will be
essential to talk patients through the specific
safety measures you have in place to ensure
both their health and yours. “Because it’s
not just about protecting and making sure
the public’s safe,” Waveny adds. “We have
to protect ourselves, too.”
The strategies needed as we move into the
post-pandemic world will look very similar to
those currently being put in place by those
that have been in a position to continue
practicing. “AACMA members are qualified,
they’re trained, they know their stuff. If we
continue to practice according to every one
of the guidelines, we – and our patients – will
be safe,” Waveny insists, sharing a sound
reminder that hand washing is the best
defence against not only COVID-19, but
other strains of influenza that crop up during
cold and flu season. “Washing your hands
is even more effective than using alcohol-
based hand sanitisers. The coronavirus is an
envelope virus and that envelope is breached
by soap and water.”
Basic hygiene is, of course, paramount
regardless of the current health crisis – but
again, being transparent about the exact

now and in the future can go a long way
to comfort wary clients, who may need
encouragement to return to treatment. “I’ll
have the table scrubbed and the face holes
scrubbed, and I have a different cover for
the face hole for every single patient, so
the risk of transferring anything to anybody
else is really minimal,” says Waveny of the
strategies employed in her own practice. “If
our practitioners are doing their triaging

before potentially unwell patients come in
and they find that there are no symptoms
and has been no known risk of them being in
contact with someone who’s infected, they
can still treat these people.”
“We just need to continue practicing really
safely, and practitioners need to remember
that they’ve trained well enough to deliver
the practice. Above all, practitioners need to
feel confident in their own abilities.”

Of course, not everyone is continuing to
perform treatments, with many taking
the heartbreaking step of shutting their
doors while we ride out the storm. Whether
closing up is a decision made for the health
and wellbeing of patients, or a necessary
move due to reduced client numbers in the
wake of the government’s requirements to
‘stay home’, the resulting lack of income –
coupled with a deep loss of sense of identity
that some are also experiencing – is just
as devastating.
One viable option to maintain practice
while still practicing physical distancing is
telehealth. Businesses around the world
have tapped into Zoom, Google Hangouts,
Microsoft Meetings and more to conduct
everything from daily meetings to personal
training sessions – and while it is obviously
impossible to perform virtual acupuncture,
an online consultation is not only a means
by which to continue offering relief to
patients during the pandemic, but an
exciting way to continue working into
the future.
It’s an approach Waveny had already been
using prior to the global health crisis to treat
patients in England. “Telehealth is really
good – in particular for herbs, because we
can see them, look at their tongue and do a
consult, and then have the herbs delivered
directly to them,” she explains, adding that

industry prepares to get back on its feet.
“People will come back,” she says, “because
they know that they get good treatment,
they know they get relief, and they know they
will be listened to.”

First things, first – make sure your on-line
basics and profiling are up to date. Have
you had to adjust your opening hours, your
contact information, your services or your
pricing since lockdown? Have you adjusted
any advertising or on-line placement plans,
to suit your current circumstances? Make
sure your ‘business as usual’ costs are under
control and paused if need be.
Investigate and pursue on-line
consultations, webinars, and ‘Facebook
Live’ sessions where you can answer
questions or concerns your clients may have.
These are a great way to stay in touch,
diversify your services and build customer
relationships. Think about on-line friendly
complementary therapies to acupuncture,
such as guided meditation, to enhance
the customer experience. Preparing, and
sharing assets, visuals, videos and materials
with your clients, is another great way to
stay in touch.

aggregated annual turnover of less than
$500 million (up from $50 million) until
June 30, 2020.
11) Create a marketing plan for the next six
months and execute. While the 10 points
above are all related to how to protect
yourself through this period, this last point is
about sales and marketing. While everyone
in the Chinese medicine industry is on the
defence, you need to get on the offence and
try to win market share during this difficult
time. Get creative and find cheap ways to
reach new customers. Use the lockdown
time to create content and build a personal
and business brand. Write a book, film a
video, do something you would ordinarily be
too busy to do.
12) Where your GST turnover has reduced
by 30% of a comparable period of the prior
year, apply for the JobKeeper payment
from the ATO. Eligible employers will be
reimbursed a fixed amount of $1500 per
fortnight for each eligible employee. This
is a complex area of the stimulus measures
announced by the government and we

Coming out stronger

T here are going to be a few
years of pain on the back
of this health crisis. It is
important you act quickly and
decisively here.
You need to be a leader and be deliberate
in your decision making over the coming
months. The below are all essential steps
you should take ASAP.
1) Build a cashflow forecast for the next 12
months and keep updating every month as
you get more data.
2) Remove all excess expenses from your
business. Most businesses have a lot of fat
in them and now is the time to cut it all.
3) Make sure your Australian Taxation
Office (ATO) lodgements and
superannuation payments are up to date.
If you can’t meet your superannuation
obligations, you need ensure you are
lodging super guarantee charge (SGC)
statements with the ATO.
4) Review your wage structure and ensure
you are maximising the $100,000 cash
relief from the stimulus package. If your
payroll is not structured correctly, you will
miss out on this, so speak with our team
before completing your March BAS.
5) Apply for the $250,000 loans
announced by the government as part of the
stimulus package. Even if you don’t need the
money just yet, apply and put it to the side
in case you do need it in the coming months.
The criteria to qualify for the loan hasn’t
been specified and will likely be treated
differently by the different banks. What we
do know is that the government is trying
to remove the red tape to make it as easy
as possible. The government will provide
eligible lenders with a guarantee for loans
with the following terms:
a. Maximum total size of loans of
$250,000 per borrower.
b. The loans will be up to three years, with
an initial six-month repayment holiday.
c. The loans will be in the form of
unsecured finance, meaning that
borrowers will not have to provide an
asset as security for the loan.
6) Manage ATO payments through the
announced series of payment deferral
concessions for businesses directly impacted
by COVD-19. These concessions are:
a. Deferring by up to six months the
payment date of amounts due through
the business activity statement
(including PAYG instalments), income
tax assessments, fringe benefits tax
assessments and excise duty.
b. Allowing businesses on a quarterly
reporting cycle to opt into monthly GST
reporting in order to get faster access
to GST refunds they may be entitled to.
You will need to stay on this method for
12 months.
c. Allowing businesses to vary Pay As You
Go (PAYG) instalment amounts to zero
for the March 2020 quarter. Businesses
that vary their PAYG instalment to
zero can also claim a refund for any
instalments made for the September
2019 and December 2019 quarters
d. Remitting any interest and penalties,
incurred on or after 23 January 2020,
that have been applied to tax liabilities.
e. Allowing affected businesses to enter
low-interest payment plans for their existing
and ongoing tax liabilities.

a lot of us of late, navigating
not only whether it feels right
to stay open or to close but also
managing the massive shift in
client numbers many have faced.

had the necessary equipment to keep our
clients safe.
At first it seemed like ‘oh well, we’re all in
the same boat’ and, to be honest, a bit of a
break. Then came the reality of managing
finances, the government stimulus and, of
course, the natural anxiety that comes with
an event of this magnitude.
For me, I managed a lot of the emotional
aspect by working in my backyard, which
has been a pile of dirt for months. The
physical effort and being outside certainly
helped reduce the emotional fluctuations.
But through the process, I was also putting
my head in the sand. The big problem I’ve
had is sitting down and working out what
I can do to improve the speed at which
my practice can come out of this. The
motivation just hasn’t been there. The ideas
have, but taking the time to enact them
has been a struggle. Let’s face it: in many
respects, we don’t really know how long this
is going to go on.
Things are starting to change now,
fortunately, and I’m re-engaging with my
practice again. I just needed a break first.

1. Take a load off. This is an opportunity to
take some time out from the crazy world
in which we live and reflect. What is it
you really want from practice and life?

If you are a herbalist, this is an
opportunity to be able to provide your
clients with some level of care. We have
found clients are definitely keen to boost
their immunity, however, stress levels are
up as well – not to mention the myriad
of other issues we treat in practice
every day. We have an opportunity to
help people through this difficult time.
If you are not a herbalist, you can still
help guide your clients with self-care
techniques such as diet, exercise
and meditation.
3. Get your admin up to date. Not the most
fun, but now is definitely the time to get
all of your bookkeeping, client files, etc
up to date so when the veil lifts you can
focus on rebooting your practice.
4. Clinic review. Every year, we sit down
for a few days and go through every
aspect our clinic to look at what is
working, what isn’t and what can we do
better. After 25 years in practice, I know
this process is still useful to improve
client outcomes, client experience and
customer service. Now is the perfect
time to go through this process.

A lmost 20 years ago, the
10 stem root treatment
was taught to me by the
Arai brothers in Kanpo Hari I
Kai, translating as Traditional
Chinese Acupuncture Medical
Association.
Deriving techniques mainly from The
Canon of Difficulties (Nan Jing), we use
complexities in the wrist pulse, body and
abdominal palpation, triple heater, yin-
yang 5 elements, and 8 extraordinaries to
formulate a root treatment. Even though I
do employ other systems from other classical
acupuncture and Qigong sources, such
as Chinese Clock, this Nan Jing-derived
yin-yang 5 elemental root is the core of my
treatments and teachings.
Whilst the 12 branches can be independently
needled in Chinese Clock treatments (ZǐWǔ
– Chinese; ShiGo – Japanese) to treat acute
and postural symptoms, the 10 stems of yin-
yang 5 elements (2×5=10) combine with the
12 channel-branches to formulate a yin-yang
5-elemental 12-channel root treatment. Ten
heavenly stems shining down through 12
earthly branches manifest the human form
of heart mind body.

Needling a combination of stems, the root
treatment follows a patient’s constitutional
pattern through the terrain of their
heart-mind-body form. Much like a First
Nations tracker-hunter, we follow signs
and symptoms, from the blindingly obvious
to the almost invisibly subtle, to diagnose
reactive channels and hollows. By reactive,
it is meant that the channel-hollow feels
alive to Qi-touch and yields a favourable
pulse change. After diagnosis leads to an
imbalance, either upright Qi emptiness or
pathogenic Qi fullness, we employ the life
(birthing) and mutual-control cycles to yin-
yang rebalance the 12 channels.
Just as humans seek balance in family
relations outside, so too do our organ-
channels seek this same balance inside.
Whereas the life cycle balances birth
relations, primarily from mother to daughter
to child, the mutual-control cycle balances
relations between husband and wife. That
is, daughter leaves her elemental house
to marry a yang channel in the mutual-
control relationship around the pentagram.
‘Control’ by itself implies the yang masculine
channel controls the yin feminine, whilst
‘mutual-control’ informs us that husband
and wife mutually relate. Difficulty 33 calls
this the firm-flexible, hard-soft (Gojū)
relationship. Whilst the yang masculine
contributes firmness to the relationship, the
yin feminine contributes flexibility, as they
flow through the struggles encountered
in life’s cycles. In my book, Awaken Qi
Within, I also translate ‘mutual-control’ as
the struggle relationship (Supplementary
Material A). Marriage is thus a mixture of
love and struggle.

 Difficulty 33 tells us that whilst the yang-
brother and yin-sister relationship maintains
the purity of each element, the mutual-
control marriages inter-mix elements.
Gallbladder Jiǎ1st & liver Yǐ2nd unseparated
are one pure wood element. Large intestine
Gēng7th & lung Xīn8th unseparated are one
pure metal element.
Macrocosmically speaking, the pure wood
of lesser yang balances with the pure metal
of lesser yin; and the pure water of full yin
balances with the pure fire of full yang.
Centring middle-earth, the 5 elements form
a cruciform between Heaven and Earth.
Whilst water and fire orient towards Earth
and Heaven on the vertical axis, wood
and metal adjust this orientation on the
horizontal, pivoting around middle-earth.
Like spring Qi, wood is lesser yang relative
to full yang of summer. Like autumn Qi,
metal is lesser yin relative to the full yin
of winter.
By treating the
root cause, both
problems & symptoms
begin to clear
Microcosmically speaking, wood separates
into yin-sister liver and yang-brother GB.
Sister liver marries the yang masculine LI
channel in the metal elemental house, whilst
brother GB marries the yin feminine spleen
in the earth element. These are two of the
five yin-yang inter-elemental marriages,
which hold the phenomenal world, i.e
human affairs, in balance. The micro-world
of human affairs balances within the macro-
universe of Heaven and Earth.
Whilst macrocosmic balance between
Heaven and Earth primarily concerns
life-cultivation (YangSheng) practices,
inter-elemental microcosmic balance is very
much about Chinese medicine. Fortunately,
practicing both, we are able to stabilise
the micro of TCM within the macro of
YangSheng!
Let’s look at an example of how the 10
stems inter-relate as mother and daughter
in the lifecycle, to formulate the first two
hollows in the root treatment. A patient
presents with a ribcage pain around Lv 14,
liver’s organ Mu. With one hand on the
wrist pulse, the other hand palpates down
this reactive liver channel to diagnose the
reactive hollow. The very instant our fingers
Qi-touch the live hollow, the pulse reacts. It
softens if too hard, firms if too soft; sinks if
too superficial, lifts if too deep; slows if too
fast or hastens if too slow. This is the yin-
yang pulse explained in the Nan Jing.

We discover that Lv 1 wood-well reacts
as the live hollow. As this is a hollow on
a yin channel, it can be the first channel-
hollow on our root treatment. After lightly
needling it, we then needle Ki 1 wood-
well on the same side of the body. After
Difficulty 69, an empty child drains their
mother. Therefore, by nourishing the kidney
Guǐ10thstem mother, she is able to assist
her child, liver Yǐ2nd. This reconnection of
daughter with mother grounds the yin-yang
5-elemental life cycle back through its
matriarchal generations, as a profound
grounding into Mother Earth. The Book of
Change (I Ching) calls the deity of Mother
Earth Kun. The author believes that Kun
disconnection is the fundamental cause of
all problems facing the human
race nowadays.
After treating the life cycle, it is time to
find her husband in the mutual-control
relationship around the pentagram!
Difficulty 33 begins by saying that liver
Yǐ2nd abandons her lesser yang wood
elemental house to subtly seduce and marry
LI Gēng7th of the lesser yin metal house. By
marrying up, liver Yǐ2nd and LI Gēng7th, yin-
wood and yang-metal, join as one couple,
to balance a patient’s constitutional pattern
in the microcosmic world of human affairs.
Returning to our example, from Lv 1 wood-
well as the root’s 1st channel-hollow, we
palpate both the wood hollow (LI 3) and
well hollow (LI 1) on the left and right large
intestine channels. If LI 3 wood-stream
reacts, then liver Yǐ2nd needs wood Qi.
However, if LI 1 metal-well reacts, then she
may need metal Qi. Like the sour flavour,
wood Qi constricts, bringing down liver’s
rebellious anger and urgency. Yang wells
being metal, like the pungent flavour, move
sluggish Qi. Moreover, well hollows, being
in the thin superficial skin of finger and toe
tips, activate the yang protective Qi (weiqi).
As you may have noticed, the elements on
yin and yang channels are different! The
elemental sequence through transporting
hollows, from shallow wells, springs,
streams, rivers to deep seas in elbows and
knees, are different. Like micro-catchments
high atop mountain peaks, wells begin flow
for both yin and yang channels. Like deep
pools, seas collect flow at end of channels
for both yin and yang. However, yin wells
begin flow at wood and end at sea hollows,
whilst yang wells begin at metal and end
at earth. This elemental difference along
channel flow enables a practitioner to
formulate a simple to intricate root and
branch, treating simple and
complicated disease.
Returning to our example, we discover that
Lv 1 wood-well mutually responds with LI
1 metal-well, in a well marriage. Imagine
a wood bride and a metal groom, joining
around a water well. After Difficulty 33,
liver Yǐ2nd abandons her wood elemental
house to seduce and marry LI Gēng7th of
the metal house. LI Gēng7th, feeling this
subtle feminine attraction, advances in to
enter her. In mutual-attraction, liver Yǐ2nd
receives his metallic yang and LI Gēng7th
receives her woody yin. In mutual-control,
his metal cuts her excessive wood, when she
urgently/angrily overreacts. Being of lesser
yin’s autumn nature, large intestine is a
cool, calm and relaxed man. In return, she
grounds his light yang metal weiqi into yin.
With just this initial three hollow
combination, we have balanced the
mutual-control relationship within the
life cycle; balanced the pentagram within

worldly struggles manifest as problems,
inner struggles manifest as symptoms. By
treating the root cause, both problems and
symptoms begin to clear.
After treating the life and mutual-control
cycles, it is time to harmonise them within
their triple heater system. Following the
patient’s pattern, we check the same
elemental wood and same transporting
well hollows – TH 3 wood-stream and TH 1
metal-well. If either react, needle it! If not,
then I check Luo-Connecting, Xi-Cleft,
Yuan-Source and Lower He-Sea. In my Qi
Arts theory, this means that the patient’s
heart-mind-body needs special help, beyond
the capacity of the yin-yang 5 elements.
This theory is also beyond the scope of
this article.
Once the empty leaks have been patched
and excessive blockages cleared, it is time to
fill this yin-yang 5 elemental form-container
with Source Qi and essence (Jing). After
Difficulty 27, the extraordinaries are a
deep reservoir, holding Source Qi and Jing.
By needling the reactive hollow on the
Conception Ren channel, we fill up
with Jing.
The text also explains how yin metal Xīn8th
(Lu) marries yang fire Bǐng3rd (SI). Being
a yin autumnal cool female, lung Xīn8th
attracts to SI Bǐng3rd’s bright, warm fire. In
mutual-control, he warms and brightens her
cold melancholy when yang-empty, whilst
she cools his burning excitement, leading
to anxiety. The other three marriages
work much the same way. Yin fire heart
attracts to yang bladder’s cool water; yin
water kidney attracts to yang stomach’s
nourishing earth; and yin earth spleen
attracts to yang GB’s strong flowing wood/
wind Qi. One of these marriages becomes
a patient’s pattern in their root treatment,
except for heart and bladder, as a heart
pattern is said to be too weak to live.
Once this foundational 5-hollow
combination has balanced the patient’s
constitutional pattern, we follow this root
into a branch treatment, as naturally as tree
branches grow from deep roots in Earth.
By cultivating deep Yangsheng roots in
our ancient Chinese medical classics, we
can branch out across our communities,

& Diabetes’

struggles he has faced getting
research off the ground

M y reasons for writing this
article are as follows:
1. After 20 years of arduous effort in trying
to conduct research into acupuncture’s
beneficial effect in alleviating the burden
of living with diabetes, I have not been
able to make one inch of progress in
getting this research trial up and running
in Australia. I hope that someone out
there reading this article might offer me
an avenue of progress. Because right
now, I’ve hit the wall!
2. To highlight the seeming apathy that
the Australian world of acupuncture
has towards the conducting of
acupuncture research. With China and
the US producing most of the world’s
acupuncture research, not much seems
to be happening in Australia!
3. Despite a few endocrinologists
being interested in seeing whether
or not acupuncture could help their
diabetic patients, the conventional
medical industry, through their “ethics
committees”, have not allowed me to
conduct a research trial, the results of
which might work against their
vested interests.
My story
I have suffered type 1 diabetic for 54 years
now. My primary reason for studying
acupuncture was to learn as much as I could
about the TCM management of diabetes,
and thereby better maintain my health.
The Mater Hospital and the
University of Queensland
In 1999, the year after completing my
BHSc (Acupuncture), I was at the Mater
Hospital for my annual diabetic check-up.
I presented myself to one of the leading
endocrinologists at the Diabetes and
Endocrinology Department, Professor
David McIntyre. My enthusiasm impressed
him and he agreed to help me set up a
clinical trial using acupuncture to treat
diabetes. His initial area of interest was in
helping treat diabetic patients with insulin
resistance. However, he was not convinced
that I had sufficient knowledge of research
methodology. Through his connections, I
enrolled in a Master of Philosophy at The
University of Queensland, Brisbane. My
principal supervisor was Dr Joanne Shaw,
with Professor McIntyre as my assistant
supervisor. In 2000, after completing

of Epidemiologic Research, I again
approached Professor McIntyre in order to
finalise the research protocol. He gave me
the bad news that the Mater Hospital ethics
committee would not give approval for my
research trial to go ahead because there
was not sufficient evidence, in their opinion,
that acupuncture would not be detrimental
to subjects’ health.
Professor McIntyre suggested that I go off
and do a pilot study, which might hopefully
help me convince the ethics committee.
Since the Mater Hospital had pulled out,
Dr Shaw was not willing to allow any of her
patients to take part in any acupuncture
pilot study.
GAMSAT
In 1999 I sat the Graduate Medical School
Admissions Test (GAMSAT) and achieved
sufficient grades to be offered an interview
at the University of Sydney School of
Medicine. I declined the offer because I
really wanted to continue with
acupuncture research.
The Guangxi University of
Chinese Medicine
China seemed to be my only hope of
completing a pilot study, or any other
research into acupuncture and diabetes.
I returned to the Guangxi University of
Chinese Medicine in Nanning, China, where
I had completed a six-week internship as
part of my bachelor’s degree.
Firstly, I worked as an English teacher in
order to save money for my future studies.
Then I studied Mandarin Chinese for three
years in order to pass the HSK Level 5
Chinese language test. After passing this
exam, I was finally permitted to enrol in
the Acupuncture and Tuina Masters by
Research program.
Three years later, I had completed this
course, as well as the pilot study, with quite
promising results. A report of my studies
can be found in the Australian Journal of
Acupuncture and Chinese Medicine, 2018,
Vol 12, Issue 1.
RMIT
The year before I had completed that
Masters course, I paid a visit to Dr Tony
Zhang, the Program Manager for the
Chinese Medicine programs in the School of
Health Sciences at RMIT, Bundoora. After
seven months of communication based on
trying to find an appropriate PhD supervisor
and finalising my PhD application, I
received the following bad news: “Due to
resources implication, conducting trials are
not always possible in the chosen topics.”
He recommended that I change to a topic
for which his PhD supervisors had the
appropriate expertise.
Deakin University and the
Barwon Health University
Hospital, Geelong
Since I had already spent so much time and
effort trying to research acupuncture’s effect
on diabetes, I did not want to change my
research topic! I sent of a series of “fishing”
emails to members of The University of
Melbourne, Monash University and Deakin
University schools of medicine.
I only received one response and in January
2016 I was granted an interview with
Professor Ken Walder, Chair of Metabolic
Diseases in the School of Medicine at
Deakin University. He seemed impressed
with the research I had done in China,
and introduced me to Professor Mark
Kotowicz, Director of the Department of
Endocrinology and Diabetes at University
Hospital Geelong.

 After three monthly meetings working on
a protocol measuring the effectiveness of
acupuncture in assisting type 2 diabetic
patients lower HbA1c levels and improving
quality of life, Professor Walder decided
that, without a protocol measuring a
biochemical mechanism, I would not be
eligible to enrol in the PhD program
at Deakin.
Professor Kotowicz was still interested in
conducting a trial based on acupuncture’s
efficacy rather than mechanism, and so we
continued having monthly meetings for 12
months, in which we discussed potential
protocols, finance, power calculations,
statistical analysis, patients’ acceptance
of acupuncture treatment and patients’
compliance to receive three months of
treatment in order to effectively measure
changes in HbA1c levels.
Finally, Professor Kotowicz decided to
discontinue the meetings, because:
1. There was no financial backing;
2. He doubted that enough patients would
comply with three months of treatment;
3. He doubted that the University
Hospital Geelong ethics committee
would approve any research based on
acupuncture treatment.
Western Sydney University
In November 2017, I flew to Sydney to
meet with Professor Caroline Smith at her
Campbelltown office. My wish was to get
her help in contacting Professor Kotowicz
and to help me perform the research at
University Hospital Geelong as a Western
University PhD candidate. She was non-
committal, but encouraged me to begin the
PhD application before anything could
be decided.
As part of the application process, I needed
to submit a research protocol. I phoned
Caroline and she decided that the research
would have to be conducted in Sydney, and
was only interested in treating female type 2
diabetic patients.
Unfortunately, after so many years living
with type 1 diabetes, I have developed
a diabetic complication called charcot
neuroarthropathy. This made moving to
Sydney impossible, so I did not continue
with the application process. Also, a quick
Google search shows that it is widely
reported that more men than women have
type 2 diabetes.
The Diabetes Australia
Research Program
In 1999, I applied for a grant from the
Diabetes Australia Research Program based

on my original protocol of acupuncture’s
effect in lowering HbA1c levels and
improving quality of life for type 2 diabetes
patients. Unfortunately, I was unsuccessful.
Conducting research in my
own clinic
I next had the idea of sourcing diabetic
patients myself. I would get them to sign a
consent form, ask them to produce as many
previous HbA1c results as they have access
to, give them free treatments, then measure
any changes in their levels and write a
report as a series of case studies based on
changes to HbA1c levels.
As Southport-based acupuncturist Dr John
McDonald (PhD) warned me, however,
without first getting approval from an ethics
committee, I would be breaking some of the
guidelines of the Nuremberg Code and the
consequences could be very problematic
for me.
Conclusion
In this day and age, with most Australian
acupuncturists up in arms against the
Australian Health Practitioner Regulation
Agency (AHPRA) advertising restrictions, it
seems incongruous that we as an industry
are not even discussing the poor state of
acupuncture research in this country.

Obtaining
informed
consent
from patients
All health practitioners would be well
aware of their requirements to obtain
informed consent from their patients
before assessment or treatment takes
place. However, Guild Insurance’s
vast experience in managing claims
made against health practitioners has
highlighted that many practitioners
don’t meet all their informed consent
requirements.
What is informed consent?
There is an explanation about informed
consent in the Code of Conduct for each
of the professions regulated by AHPRA.
In this document, informed consent
is defined as ‘a person’s voluntary
decision about healthcare that is made
with knowledge and understanding of
the benefits and risks involved’. This
statement highlights the difference
between consent and informed consent.
If a patient hasn’t been made aware
of the benefits and risks, their consent
isn’t informed.
Informed consent isn’t just required for
treatment. Depending on the nature of
the healthcare being provided, informed
consent should also be obtained
for assessment.

Informed consent and insurance
claims
Informed consent can feature in insurance
claims against practitioners in a couple
of ways.
It’s not uncommon when a patient is
unhappy following treatment for them to
allege they weren’t made aware of the
risks when they consented to treatment.
Quite often they will allege the treatment
was negligent and has resulted in harm
or suffering. They then add that had they
been informed of the possible risks, they
wouldn’t have consented.
In other cases, patients may not make
any allegation about consent, their
complaint might solely focus on the
clinical outcome, yet when their claim
is being managed it’s found that they
didn’t give their informed consent prior
to treatment being provided. When this
occurs, it makes it challenging for Guild
to prove that the practitioner has treated
appropriately and met their requirements.
The informed consent conversation
Informed consent requires a conversation
between the treating practitioner and the
patient. This conversation needs to occur
prior to assessment and treatment.
Better through experience.
The conversation must:
> Detail the recommended assessment
and treatment as well as alternate
treatment options.
> Include the expected benefits of that
treatment.
> Provide information about the risks of
the treatment.
> Allow time for the patient to ask
questions.
> Be held in language which can be
understood by the patient which
means practitioners should avoid
technical clinical language.
> Take place in a private area where
the patient will feel comfortable being
open and honest about their health
situation.
> Be tailored to that individual patient
and their unique clinical needs.
Recording informed consent
It’s imperative that practitioners make a
note in the clinical record regarding the
patient providing their informed consent.
This needs to be more than ‘IC given’.
The record needs to show what treatment
options and risks were discussed as well
as any questions asked by the patient.
The record should also show what the
patient consented to as well as what they
didn’t consent to where relevant.
The informed consent form
One area which leads to some confusion
about informed consent is how to use
an informed consent form. Having a
patient sign a form is seen as a quick
and simplified way of having a patient
provide their informed consent and
keeping a record of that. However,
they are unfortunately too often
used inappropriately.
Signed forms aren’t a requirement.
While recording consent is required, this
doesn’t need to be done using a form.
Notes in the clinical record are sufficient.
However, signed forms do provide
additional evidence if there is an allegation
that informed consent wasn’t given.
Forms can’t be used to replace the
informed consent conversation. A patient
cannot read a form and gain the same
level of understanding as they would from
a conversation with the practitioner. Nor
can they ask questions of the form.

A form should only be signed after the
conversation with the practitioner has
been had and the patient understands
what it is they’re consenting to. Patients
are occasionally asked to sign consent
forms at reception before they’ve seen
the practitioner. As there has been
no assessment or discussion about
treatment at this stage, this can’t be
considered informed consent as the
patient hasn’t been informed.
Some practices combine new patient
forms with the consent form. This isn’t
ideal as the two forms serve different
purposes. Also, having them on the
one form encourages patients to sign
the consent form at reception before
they’ve seen the practitioner. Therefore,
they should be divided into two
separate forms.
Informed consent is not a one-
off event
Practitioners regularly ask how often
their patients need to give informed
consent. There is no set time frame for
when informed consent conversations
or signed forms need to be repeated.
The requirement is that when a patient is
receiving any assessment or treatment,
they need to have given their informed
consent to this. Therefore, informed
consent should be an ongoing process;
it’s a continual conversation with patients
during consultations. And when there

is any change in the treatment being
provided, or if the patient has returned
following a period of absence, informed
consent needs to be revisited. A
general ‘consent to all treatment’ for
the life of the therapeutic relationship is
not appropriate.
Informed financial consent
As well as consenting to assessment and
treatment, patients should also give their
informed financial consent. This means
they need to be provided with information
about the expected cost of treatment
before this treatment commences.
In summary…
There is no one right way to undertake
an informed consent conversation and
process. Practitioners must adapt what’s
discussed for the patient they’re treating
and that patient’s unique circumstances.
However, what must occur in all cases
is that the patient is informed of and
understands the proposed treatment,
alternate treatment options and the
risks involved. Only with this information
can they give their informed consent.
The practitioner must also be sure to
make a record of this informed consent
discussion in the clinical record.

brand-new degree and a
coffer full of new tools is
an exciting moment for a new
Chinese medicine graduate.
But it’s equally daunting as we realise that
the time has come to stand on our own two
feet. It can be overwhelming (to say the
least, in times of pandemics) and that’s one
major reason finding a mentor at this time
is important.
What’s the situation?
It’s hard to transition from being a student
to a practitioner in normal situations,
but to start a business in unprecedented
circumstances on the back of a pandemic
seems an incredible challenge. Our industry
is known for high attrition rates. Some

students tell me that during their courses
at university, they are being told that the
Chinese medicine profession is not one from
which to make a living. It deeply shocks me
to hear those statements and at the same
time, I remember my first weeks and months
as a new practitioner and the factors I had
to face, manage and resolve all by myself.
It was certainly difficult. It wasn’t just
integrating all the technical skills, the client
management and marketing; now it was
also planning and running my own business.
We must find our own patients, our own
rhythm, support ourselves financially and
emotionally, and come up with new ideas
when things are not working out. Imagine:
you have just spent four or five years at
university and worked hard for your degree;
and on the eve of your new venture, you’re
hit with a global crisis? How unlucky. Or, to
say it in a positive way, what a challenge!
Embracing this unprecedented situation is
very scary to all of us. But we don’t have a
choice and are all sitting in that same exact
boat. Even as seasoned practitioners, we
can feel out of our depth when it comes to
how to manage this situation. Do I keep my
doors open? What are the risks? How can
I navigate those risks? What are my moral
obligations? How am I going to make a
living? How will I survive?
Right now might not be the best time to
establish your clinic unless you are 100 per
cent certain that you can manage all that
comes with it. But what you can do now
is work on your future situation. Even a
pandemic will eventually resolve, new life
will begin and life will return to a
different normal.
The uncertainty is difficult for many. And
yet, we wake up every morning facing a
day with lots of opportunities, even when
isolated. Consider it a retreat where you
establish your own sanctuary. When the
business of toing and froing is taken out,
we can settle, relax, think, reflect and plan.
During this transition into our post-viral
existence, let us gain immense clarity
on what we want as Chinese medicine
practitioners. Some things you can do
during this time are:
• Plan the space that you are going to
be working out from (home, someone’s
clinic, your own clinic or else?)
• Make sure you are up to date with
Chinese Medicine Board of Australia
(CMBA) guidelines
• Have a provider number for private
health claims
• Professional association membership
• Insurance
• Think about your branding (colours,
symbols, font)
• Start establishing some ways to
communicate with your patients (email,
SMS, blog and more)
• Make a list of suppliers that you would
like to work with
• Create a list of things that you will
order frequently
• Consider how you are going to structure
your sessions (ie. time management and
what types of treatment)
• Make a draft of a treatment plan that
you could give to a patient at the end of
their consultation
• Consider questions like: How do you
follow up with your patients? What do
you do if they report adverse effects to
you? Will you treat children?
• Design any forms and templates
(including referrals to and from other
practitioners) that you might want
to use
Finding a mentor
For new graduates, now is the best time to
connect with potential mentors. Someone
who you feel can help you make decisions
or plan the next steps; someone who is
there for you when you have an idea or a

individuals, one for their unique practice
style and someone else for their special
interest areas.
When I questioned established practitioners
a few years back, all my well-established
and seasoned colleagues recommended
that I have a mentor – someone who has
been there, who has done it all before.
One way to establish contact with a
potential mentor is to reach out to them
directly and ask; or go to acupuncture.org.
au/membership/mentoring-program/ to
connect with individuals. You must be an
AACMA member to access this service.
Mentorship is well established in the
Western faculty, where junior practitioners
work in the hospital, but because we, as
Chinese medicine practitioners, work
in private practice, we don’t have this
framework available.

 A study that surveyed final year Chinese
medicine students in Australia about their
perceptions of preparedness for clinical
practice concluded that Chinese medicine
students perceived themselves to be
"somewhat adequately" or "adequately"
prepared for various aspects of clinical
practice (Moore et al., 2010).
A follow-up survey of graduates within
the first 12 months of clinical practice
found that there is greater desire for
clinical experience, the need for support in
establishing and maintaining business and
interpersonal skills, as well as interest in
mentoring (Moore A, O’Brien K, 2012).
In her article on the current state of
mentoring in our field, Mentoring in
Chinese Medicine, Australian Chinese
medicine educator Glenys Savage considers
mentoring vital to the progression and
maturation of our industry.
A survey on mentoring conducted by
AACMA in 2008 also revealed that
mentoring is desired by members and
was viewed potentially beneficial for
practitioners as well as the wider Chinese
medicine community (Moore, 2011). Some
of the survey outcomes were:

A n old idiom linked to the
martial arts is: “A tooth
from the tiger’s mouth”
– which, in short, means that
anything worthwhile tends to
be difficult.
A variation on this is: “You can’t catch a
tiger cub without entering the tiger’s den.”
The reason I bring this up is that it is never
easy to learn a new skill, but martial arts is
a worthwhile one for a traditional Chinese
medicine practitioner, especially any system
that works with Nei Gong
(internal building).

any particular technique that helps you
feel better either physically or mentally.
Studying a particular technique until you
have a thorough understanding of it will
make it easier to prescribe to patients in

Without further delay, let us explore the
last five techniques in the Xing Lin Quan 10
Form.
6. Dragon Ascends to the
Heavens 飛龍昇天
i) From a horse stance, slowly straighten the
knees as you rotate your waist, abdomen
and chest left, right, then left, area by area
(visualise the energy moving upwards in
a spiral), as you push your arms upwards.

ii) Have your palms facing the heavens and
hold the stretch for a few seconds.

Therapeutic benefit: This technique can
assist with resolving Liver Qi stagnation via
the rotational movements of the abdomen
and chest; this may also assist with digestive
issues. This technique is done slowly (yin).
7. Dragon Crashes into
Ocean 龍入東海
i) Continuing directly from the end of the
last technique, make a claw with both hands
and slash downwards, stopping in front of
the waist. Hands should be positioned left
on top of right, resting on wrist. Bend your
knees slightly as your hands reach waist
level. (Fig 26)
Therapeutic benefit: Performing this
technique can assist with activating the
channels in the upper limbs. It may assist
with issues relating to wrist, elbow and
shoulder injury. This technique can either
be done slowly (yin) or with speed and force
(yang).
Important Note: Repeat the technique three
times, alternating with Dragon Rises to the
Heavens.
8. Monk Ties the Sash
僧及腰帶
i) Remain in a horse stance and move your
hands down to the waist. (Fig 27.1)
ii) Make a circular rotation with the hands
around the waist (left to left, right to right)
from the level of the Dan Tian towards the
lower back (Ming Men area) and bring the
hands back to the front.
iii) When the hands are at your back, make
contact with your lower back using the
palms of your hands. (Fig 27.2-27.4) When
the hands are at the front, imagine you are
holding two cords and pull them to either
side at waist level as if tightening a sash
on a robe. (Fig 27.5) Repeat the technique
three times.
Therapeutic benefit: Using this technique
can assist with lower back pain that
presents as a dull throbbing and is worse
in colder weather; it may also help with
arthritis in the lower spine with symptoms
relating to poor range of movement. This is
a yin technique and should be done slowly.
9. Climb the Tian Shan

and practice needling on oranges, we were
finally getting into the real thing. Of course,
there was the reality of actually putting
needles into people’s bodies. I admit,
needling myself at LI 4 for the first time was
scary, painful and highly stressful.
My study buddy and I – both being tough
youngish men – weren’t scared at all. Or
were we? In fact, that first needling class
was all about pain, screams and more pain.
I remember my buddy clenching his teeth
and saying “just do it”, but then yelling to
me to pull it out, the pain was too much. Of
course, he was more pained when I pointed
out that he should open his eyes and see
that I had not even touched him. The needle
was still paused in my hand six inches above
his leg!
I would say to all students the quickest way
to learn is to practice on yourself. If you
can't needle yourself, how can you needle
a patient?
As part of our class training, our lecturer at
the time, Dr Debra Godson, made us create
our own acupuncture point location book.
Drawings of bodies were photocopied or
drawn and the meridians penciled in. In
my case, this ‘book’ was developed to the
point where I used it in clinic as my reference
and my own observation agrees, that the
acupuncture channel takes around 20
minutes to circulate fully. However, there
are a number of studies I have read from
China and Russia that have timed the Qi
flow at 28 minutes and 34 seconds to make
a complete circuit. Therefore, for optimal
treatment results, we probably should aim
for that amount of needle retention.
Finding the acupuncture point does not
necessarily mean strictly adhering to
the anatomical and written description,
because points can and do move slightly.
I was taught that there is always a slight
depression at the point. If we remember that
research has shown acupoints are areas
of reduced electrical resistance, it fits that
the skin could retract slightly at that point.
Finding a point, then, is both a science and
an art. Science in that we need to follow the
correct point location description, and art
because a fine touch is needed to find the
exact point. Gently running your finger over
the area will, with practice, enable you to
feel the depression where the point is.
For particularly large patients, it can be
problematic to precisely locate points.
Pressing deeply helps, as does using
anatomical landmarks combined with
intuition.
I always assumed that every other
practitioner knew much more than me
and had a far better knowledge of theory, Raf Nathan graduated from the Australian

discussing these, he feels that is incredibly
important to establish the principle of the

this principle, or a reasoning process, then it
will be extremely difficult for the physician to
progress in the medicine, both in the clinic and

All ten thousand things cannot be detached
from the principle; and for a physician,
the principle is absolutely crucial. When
it unfolds, the principle becomes the ten
thousand manifestations of nature; and
when it converges, the principle returns
to the one core. The physician is this
one [very] core, and the diseases are the
ten thousand manifestations of nature.
By enumerating the multitude of the ten
thousand diseases, indeed, the way of
medicine is difficult; yet, for each of the ten
thousand [manifestations] of disease, it is
just the contraction of one single disease.
In an analogy, the north star is [like]
the one core of a physician, and the ten
thousand stars are [like] the ten thousand
manifestations of disease. If one wishes to
identify all ten thousand stars [at once]
by the north star, then it would simply
overwhelm one during their [attempt to]
identify [them all]; however, if one uses
the north star to identify only one star,
then there will be immediately a direct
link [between the two]. As the two [stars]

illuminate each other, how could there be
any error [in identification]? Therefore,
as a physician in clinic, by my one core,
it must be expected of me to see through
the one root [cause] of the disease. By my
one [core], identify the one [root cause].
Once one discovers the truth of the one
[root cause], all ten thousand doubts are
resolved. Is this not so simple?
This one [core], it is simply the principle.
Suppose that the principle is clear in my
mind, then the yīn [patterns] are simply yīn,
the yáng [patterns] are simply yáng. How
could they be mixed up in confusion? After
there is a clarity in the yīn and yáng, there
are the counterparts of exterior and interior,
vacuity and repletion, and cold and heat.
When one clarifies these six transmutations
and the yīn-yáng, then all the diseases
under heavens undoubtedly cannot be
outside of these eight!
Dr. Allen Tsaur, DOM, L.Ac., has been
licensed since 2017. He is currently a DAOM
faculty at ACCHS in Oakland, CA. He has
collaborated with Michael Brown in the
translation of Explanations of Channels and
Points, published in 2019. He again teams up
with Michael for the translation of the first three
volumes of Jingyue Quanshu 景岳全書 by
Zhang Jingyue, and plans to publish this work
in August 2020 by Purple Cloud Press. This
work includes discourses on yin-yang, the eight
principles, the ten questions and philosophical
discussions of treatments and methods.

Lǐ 理 principle is rather difficult to translate without sacri-
ficing much of its meaning. From the cultural context, the Lǐ
理 here is most likely defined by the interpretation of 程朱
理學 Chéng-Zhū School of Rational Idealism, which was
the mainstream belief system at its time. Under the teaching
of Chéng Yí 程頤 (1033-1107 CE), Lǐ 理 is defined as “the
inner nature.” Zhū Xī 朱熹 (1130-1200 CE) further re-de-
fines Lǐ 理 as the “universal law,” much like the ultimate
reality where all phenomena operate from and abide by.
Zhū Xī proposes that for humans, their inherent inner na-
ture is engendered by the heavenly universal law; thus, there
is an imprint of Lǐ 理 within the human’s inner nature; yet,
it is sheathed and covered by the mundane qì, emotions,
and desires. By cultivation, the human mind can be purified,
and this inherent inner nature can manifest and bring one
close to the universal law, which is the Heavenly Lǐ 天理.
Therefore, the best translation of Lǐ 理 may be “rational
universal law/principle,” as Zhū Xī believes such universal
law can be perceived from a rationalist approach, namely,
by 格物致知 investigating things to acquire knowledge.
Nevertheless, for the sake of an easier reading experience,
as this term is used frequently throughout this writing, we
are regretfully bastardizing the term and shortening it to
simply “principle.”

AACMA Upcoming Events
It was a great way to finish off the year.
Chinese New Year 2020: the Victoria
State Committee held its annual lunch for
members at the Matthew Flinders Hotel in
Chadstone. This was a fun gathering with
raffle prizes generously donated from our
TCM suppliers, drawn during the lunch.
Thanks to all who attended on the day.
February 2020: The Qi and your Body by
Ying Mei Hua, was our first seminar of the
year. This was an interactive seminar that
included practical demonstrations and
audience participation.
The Victoria State Committee plans to
resume our seminar schedule for the rest
of the year, as soon as
circumstances allow.
We look forward to connecting with you
all again in person, very soon.

The year 2019 was a good year
for the WA State Committee as
we were able to offer various
workshops with quality speakers.
The second half of 2019 comprised of two
main events:
1. A two-day workshop given by David
Hartman about Acupuncture Point
Combination on the 22nd and 23rd
of June. This seminar was worth 12
CPD points and gave us more in-depth
information about new combinations
of acupuncture points and their
multitude of functions.
2. On the 18th of August, Marie Hopkins
gave a Marketing seminar regarding
MailChimp automation for the TCM
practice. We learned how to save time
with multiple marketing strategies,
how to use automation and how to
set up MailChimp from scratch. This
seminar was valued at 4 professional
CPD points.
With the help of the AACMA we were also
able to invite inter-state presenters who
weres fascinating. We hope to offer even
more interesting events for the
coming year.
Sadly, one committee member, Liz
Langton who was our treasurer, had to
move interstate and thus resigned from
her position in the WA State Committee.
We would like to thank Liz for her steady
attendance and dedication in the
past years.
I would also like to thank my committee
members for their help, creativity and
enthusiasm. We had a meeting in January
and more new events were added to our
calendar. I look forward to working with
them in this challenging year, and wish a
