Chapter 1
THE PROBLEM AND ITS SETTING

Introduction

Since childhood, we already have a vivid image of what we are going

to be in the future. We are further encourage by our parents and relatives

including our teachers, to strive for dreams. We are motivated to do well in

our scholastic years especially in the higher education, or college. In college,

we get to choose the field of specialization that we want to be a part of with

the intention becoming a professional in the said field. And after these

academic endeavors comes the challenges of the real world. Wherein we

leave the institution which has prepared us and face the challenges of

employment. In this study the researchers studied the present condition of

their alumni in terms of their employment status. They have chosen the fresh

graduates of this for the academic year 2016-2019

One of the factors that determine the effectiveness of an academic institution

is through the employability of its graduates. The quality of graduates is very

much a function of quality instruction and facilities because these will help

ensure that graduates are equipped with the knowledge, skills and values

that will enable them to work in their respective field.

Hotel Restaurant Services in Trimex Colleges has developed a well-

organized and strategic program of career counseling and job placement to

support students and young alumni. Establish and expanding linkages to

both local international firms for possible job placement and assistance is

another major responsibility of the Trimex Colleges.

The two-year Hospitality and Restaurant Services program is designed to

provide students with a through foundation on the skills required to begin a

competitive career in the hotel and restaurant industry. Students will be

prepared to earn national certifications on bread and pastry production,

cookery, food and beverages services, bartending, front office and

housekeeping. The combination of classroom activities, laboratory training in

up to date facilities, and field experiences aim to develop excellent hospitality

industry practitioners.

In its expansive sense, teaching is a process that facilitates learning,

Teaching is the specialized application of knowledge, skills and attitudes

designed to provide unique service to meet the educational needs of the

individual and of society, The choice of learning activities whereby the goals

of education are realized in the school is the responsibility of the teacher.

BACHELOR OF SCIENCE IN TOURISM MANAGEMENT

The continuous and fast changing technological advancement and with the

advent of globalization in the industry and employment, every educational

institution has to align its curriculum to the international standards of

instruction to ensure that its graduates are competitive in the international

work arena.

Theoretical/Conceptual Framework

The main purpose of this study is to determine the Hotel and

Restaurant Service’s to employability.

According to Dawis and Lent (2016) a class theory of career

development, candidates must hold a bachelor’s degree, possess at least
three years of related experience.

According to Dawis (2002, 2005) career development is anchored

on the individual difference tradition of vocational behavior called person

environment correspondence theory, viewing career choice and

development as continual processes of adjustment and accommodation in

which the person looks for work in organizations and environments that

would match his/her skills and capabilities, and the employer in turn looks

for individuals who have the capabilities to meeting the “requirements” of

10

the organization. The most central requirements are abilities, which are

operationalized as dimensions of skills that are considered necessary.

Candidate must hold a Bachelor’s degree and three years of substantial

involvement in administrating programs, in either a sponsoring, recipient

or self-funded organization.

BACHELOR OF SCIENCE IN TOURISM MANAGEMENT

Definition of Terms

The following terms are being defined operationally and

conceptually.

Employability – a set of achievements, skills, understanding and

personal attributes that make graduates more likely to gain employment
and be successful in their chosen occupations, which benefits themselves,
the workforce, the community and the economy. A broader set of skills
and attributes that will enable a graduate to be successful throughout their
working life.

Employment status – refers to the status of an economically active

person with respect to his or her employment, that is to say, the type of
explicit and implicit contract of employment with other persons or
organizations that the person has in his or her job.

Knowledge – is a familiarity, awareness, or understanding of someone or

something, such as facts, information, descriptions or skills which is
required through experience or education by perceiving, discovering or
learning.

Skills – are the expertise or talent needed in order to do a job or task. Job
skills allow you to do a particular job and life skills help you through
everyday task. There are many different types of skills that can help you
succeed at all aspects of you life whether it’s school, work or even a sport
or hobby. This is what makes you confident and independent in life and
are essential for success. It might take determination and practice, but
almost any skill can be learned or improved. Set yourself realistic
expectations and goals, get organized and get learning.
16

BACHELOR OF SCIENCE IN TOURISM MANAGEMENT

Tracer – a tracer study or graduate survey is a survey of graduates from

education institutions, which takes place sometime after graduation or the
end of training.

REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE AND STUDIES

This chapter presents the related literature and studies after the

through and in depth search done by the researchers. It also includes the

synthesis of the state of the art, theoretical and conceptual framework with

their paradigms to fully understand the research and lastly, the definition and

terms for better comprehension of the study.

State of the Art

The literature and studies that were reviewed were found to have bearing on

the present study. They serve as bases for conceptualization the study’s

problem, research design and methodology.

Related Literature

According to the study of Arcelo Sanya. A tracer study is a

determination to trace graduates of higher education institutes. Graduate

survey, alumni researches, graduates career tracking, or follow up study, are

the term for it. Through a tracer study, an institution is able to evaluate the

quality of education given to their graduates by knowing the graduates

placements and positions in the society which later can be used as a

18

BACHELOR OF SCIENCE IN TOURISM MANAGEMENT

benchmark in producing more qualified and competitive graduates. This

information is related to the present researchers to find out the employment

status of HRS graduates from batches 2016-2019.

In the book, employment and career opportunities after graduation by Arcelo

and Sanya, the existence of a huge number of educated unemployed can

lead to a certain amount of political instability in a country, for they are being

among the educated class and knowledgeable about the privileges society

can offer, feel doubly enrich. In this matter, the analysis of the unemployment

situation in the Philippines has shown that the young graduates are still in the

job hunting stage. This book is provides a very vital revelation of the status of

young graduates which is very significant to the present undertaking traced

the employment status of the HRS graduates from batches 2016. it also

good to note whether the findings of this study support the statement taken

from this book.

The employment and employability of a select group of the Filipino colleges

graduates by Allan B. de Guzman and Belinda V. de Castro, states that

graduates need ro develop for personal skills, qualities and experiences that
19

BACHELOR OF SCIENCE IN TOURISM MANAGEMENT

enable to them to complete in the labor market. The author advises the need

for students to do everything they can for them to grow as experts in their

chosen field while they are still in school. All these trainings and experiences

will just benefit them where the time comes that will be establishing their own

careers. This is related the present study as it gave suggestion to further

improve the HRS curriculum which must live up to demands and

expectations of the different industries.

The Philippines may go beyond the standing of employment in the country,

rights and importance should be understood. As specified in the book labor

economics by Cristobal M. Pagoso, in view of low literacy rates in rising

unemployment in developing countries, it has become imperative that greater

educational opportunities should be provided for the great proportion of adult

population as well as the large number of youth outside the formal school

system to help them acquire further knowledge and skill thereby improving

their livelihood and strengthening the country.

From the book contemporary social problems and issues, it states that the

educational levels and literacy rates of workers in the Philippines are among
20

BACHELOR OF SCIENCE IN TOURISM MANAGEMENT

the highest in Asia, but technical, manual and managerial are poorly

developed and in short supply. There is an over-abundance of college

graduates that most especially in manila area were in the field of education,

law and other professionals exceed in demand to find employment

appropriate to their educational training. This information may be considered

in the improvement of HRS curriculum to add the technical, manual and

managerial skills which are said to be lacking among the Filipino graduates.

Employment is the capacity of an individual to showcase his talent and to

use the training gathered in the course, Thomas powers on his book

“Educating for Careers” stated the nation that marketable skills provided

today’s crop of workers employment opportunities. The statement of powers

is relevant to the present study because he pointed out that education is very

important in having the marketability and general skills needed in finding an

appropriate job. In this study, it helps to develop such skills among the

college graduates for them to find or to get an appropriate job.

According to Robert W. Mclntosh on his book” Employee Management

Standards” aimed to determined that the employee’s performance on the job

21

BACHELOR OF SCIENCE IN TOURISM MANAGEMENT

attitude about the job depending on the degree to which the manager fulfils

the needs. The author associated that to the employees that will look at the

performance and attitude towards the job that will be strongly affected by the

degree on where the superior may reach the fulfilment the job desires.

The book, Unemployment and the Dual Labor Market stressed that the

unemployment is the outgrowth of a process of job search where workers

have limited information about the labor market. On the other hand, people

who first begin looking for jobs lacks basis information which will help the

graduates to disseminate the rejection of jobs to higher expectations. This

book mainly wants to view that job searching is a wide process action where

in job seekers should gain more knowledge or information that will reaches

their satisfaction on what and where to find jobs that will lead them to the

profession that they want to achieve.

Mclntosh, in his book practicing better human relations aimed to determine

that the quality of a person’s work life should improve as more and more

needed values are satisfied by the individuals job and career progression.
22

BACHELOR OF SCIENCE IN TOURISM MANAGEMENT

This is significant to the present study as it assessed the progress of the

graduates in their jobs/professions.

Philippine society nowadays has encountered so many problems in terms of

labor and employment. Labor only contracting in a economy that some

economist would justify labor only contracting as our only weapon to remain

competitive. Therefore, some of the workers are seeking for better

employment opportunities abroad for a high salary. In case of the graduates

nowadays. their first problem is seeking for a job after graduation. Knowing

that it is very hard to find a job suitable to their course right away after

graduation that may cause to trigger them to work not to aligned to the

profession they graduate for their usual reason is the salary that they can get

right away. Some go abroad for better profit than to continue their profession.

. Research Studies

Campus, Nuyda and Icaranom’s “Employment Status of the English

Graduates 2006-2008” aimed to present a feedback mechanism for the

department and college to come up with a more productive, competitive and

effective program for the students. This study presents the possible reasons

why there are graduates who are unemployed and employed. In the same
23

BACHELOR OF SCIENCE IN TOURISM MANAGEMENT

manner with the present study conducted, it leads to show the programs

used in providing HRS graduates adequate skills to help them for

professional careers, but the program must be open to changes that would

effectivity lead graduates for a better employment.

A tracer study of the employment status of PUPQC AY 2004-2005 by Jarito

Verona determined the general profile and the present employment status of

the respondents 2004-2005. This research tackles about the tracer study that

uses a method which is primarily intended to locate graduates of academic

institution, past recipients of scholarship grants and former participants and

in order to collect data update information about the target people. This kind

of study is also a tool to generate or influence decition making and planning

of a certain institution about the development of the curriculum. It is likewise

regulating document efficiency and support on the demographic profile of a

certain institution that can be measured through the quality of its graduates.

The tracer study of the graduates of certificate in teaching physical education

(CPE) from 1995 to 2005, answered the profile of the CPE graduates in

terms of job position and the employment in terms of job encountered in the
24

BACHELOR OF SCIENCE IN TOURISM MANAGEMENT

CPE. Majority of the CPE graduates are males. Based on the findings of the

study, most of the CPE graduates are in the permanent status of

employment. They are employed in the national government with the monthly

salary of 10,000 Php to 15,000 Php a month. The top most encounter of the

CPE graduates is that they are not given equal opportunities like those of the

education graduates. This study may be connected to the present study in

terms of the employment standing or status of the graduates. It also focusses

on the job position that is also one important factor on choosing a job

because as a graduates of a particular courses, the job should be in relation

to the course they have graduated.

Synthesis of the State of the Art

The review of related literature and studies has an implication on the

present study. All reviews focused on graduates and employability.

According to The Pedagogy for Employability Group (2004), it is widely

agreed that graduates with work experience are more likely to secure

employment than graduates without. It is also consider the wider life

experiences that many students, particularly mature students, bring them into

higher education

Different authors moreover agree that employability depends on

theknowledge, skills, abilities, attitudes and values (KSAV’s) the individuals

25

BACHELOR OF SCIENCE IN TOURISM MANAGEMENT

possess, the way they utilize their KSAV’s in workplace, and the way they

present themselves to employers. The need for improved employability skills

is linked to the success of the individual and to the success of the company.

Education and employment is important. The higher education has been

concerned with the development of the whole person as well as knowledge,

attributes, and skills which any educated person should expect to have by

the time of graduation. It further aims to inspire and enable individuals to

develop their capabilities to the highest potential levels throughout life so that

they grow intellectually, contribute effectively to society, achieve personal

fulfilment and are well- equipped for work.

Gap/s that the Present Study Will Bridge

From the above review of the related literature and studies, the

following gaps were determined:

1. There were no studies yet concluded on the employability of Hotel,

Restaurant Services.

RESEARCH METHODOLOGY

This chapter discusses the methods and procedures used in

the study. This chapter includes the research design used, population
frame, instrumentation, validation of the instrument used, data gathering
procedure, description of the respondents.

Research Design

This tracer study will use the descriptive research design wherein
according to shuttleworth (2008). It is a scientific method which involves
observing and describing the behaviour of a subject without influencing it
in any way.
Online survey will be use to collect the data from the graduates.
The initial target population will be all the students who completed their
studies in Trimex Colleges in the years 2016 to 2019.

Sources of Data

The study will have two sources of data namely; primary and

secondary sources, the primary sources of the data were the graduates of

Hotel, Restaurant Services Academic Year 2016-2019. Secondary sources of

the data were the books, thesis, internet, journals, periodicals, magazine, and

other reference materials deemed necessary to gather the needed

information of the study.

27

BACHELOR OF SCIENCE IN TOURISM MANAGEMENT

Population of the Study

The respondents of this study will be the HRS graduates of batch

2016 – 2019 in Trimex Colleges. The researchers are still in the midst of

determining the population number. The researchers had given the office of

the registrar a request letter for the information of the HRS graduates of

batch 2016 – 2019.

Instrumentation and Validation

A researchers-made questionnaire will be use in the study. The

researchermadequestionnaire is composed of two parts, the first part is

about the demographicprofile of the graduate students and the second part

will be compose of the questionsabout the employment status and the

unemployment status of the respondents.

Data Gathering Procedure

The survey covered all the Hotel, Restaurant Services

graduates of Trimex colleges in the City of Biñan, Laguna. The researcher
will distribute and collect the survey questionnaire through online. The
researcher will tabulate the data with the help of the researcher's
statistician.
