REACTION PAPER ON EFFECTIVE APPROACHES TO ENERGY PLANNING AND

CLASSIFICATION OF ENERGY SYSTEMS MODELS BY FARZAD RAHIMI MOUGOUEI

AND MAHDIEH-SADAT MORTAZAVI

This journal was authored by Farzad Rahimi Mougouei, Faculty of Industrial

Engineering at Golpayegan University of Technology, Golpayegan, Iran and Mahdieh-Sadat

Mortazavi, Faculty of Industrial Engineering at Amirkabir University of Technology, Tehran,

Iran which was published by International Journal of Energy Economics and Policy, 2017, 7(2),

127-131.

It discusses and explains energy planning and classifies models of energy systems

according to various approaches. It focuses completely on the overall energy planning that

requires a balance of supply and demand of energy. Generally, its content emphasizes the energy

planning, energy systems modeling and energy management. It highlights the importance of

coordination of all energy sectors, proper development and implementation of energy policies

and guidance to the consumer to select the best sources. As what can be inferred from the article,

energy is one of the influential factors in economic, social, technical and environmental sectors,

therefore, the government considered two priorities, namely: to achieve an appropriate situation

in the area of energy and to have proper planning adapted to specific conditions and

characteristics of each country. Since there is a rapid increase of energy demand, conversion of

energy from fossil fuel to renewable energy resources has been developed by predicting and

determining the appropriate share of required energy fuels. In addition, due to high energy

consumption and consequently emissions from the combustion of fossil fuel, the replacement of

conventional energy sources is being implemented by constructing an alternative renewable

energy resource. The incidence of economic fluctuations affecting fossil resources, population

growth and increasing energy demand and raising awareness about the negative effects of fossil

fuels on the environment and human health, have made the use of renewable resources the focus

of attention. There is an advantage of using renewable energy sources, it has higher price

stability because they are less vulnerable to price fluctuations. Taking the social and economic

well-being of society into account, the quality of energy at the point of consumption, growth in

less developed regions and similar cases make the utilization of renewable resources more

important. However, the need to meet the demand in a way desired is certainly the combination

of energy planning, energy systems modeling and energy management considering the amount of

supply and planning and rightful management of resources in terms of criteria affecting energy

sources. In order to achieve the balance between supply and demand of energy, it is possible if

all the energy sectors are coordinated together, and correct formulation and implementation of

energy policies.

In my point of view, it is necessary for us to convert to renewable energy instead of fossil

fuels which is slowly decreases in terms of world demand. In addition, fossil fuels also emit

greenhouse gases and other harmful gases that slowly affecting and killing our environment.

Currently, we are relying more on fossil energy which continuously contributes to the depletion

of our ozone layer. If we consider the use of biomass and any other renewable energy resources,

we could help our environment to recover and carbon emission will be minimized. Maybe its

time for us to acts and give importance on our ecosystem and focus more on the alternative

energy resources which is I think sufficiently enough if we choose it as our primary energy

source. In addition, if we decline from using of fossil fuels, greenhouse emission will be
addressed, depletion of fossil energy will be recovered, prices of energy will be lowered and

demand of energy will be enough in due time. It is very important to us, especially to our country

which is a developing country to pay attention on energy optimization, energy planning and

energy management. It is very useful for us to know how the author approaches the proper

energy planning from supply, distribution and demand that will be utilized on a given time. His

work allows me to understand more deeply on the issues and consequences of continuous usage of

fossil fuel. On the other hand, Municipal solid waste is one of the alternative energy resources that

we need to work out particularly in the Philippines. Currently, we have a lot of landfills which wastes

are being treated as useless. Utilization of MSW will certainly fill in the gap of energy demand crisis,

we could use it as a fuel for steam generator and extracting methane as biogas. However, in order for

us to be successful in this field, proper discipline and series of segregation program should be

followed. The importance of this work is that they consider and focuses on the overall energy

planning of supply and demand of energy. They also pointed out the importance of coordination of

all energy sector, proper development and energy policies to be able to meet the proper energy

balance. Indeed, I would strongly recommend their work as one of the interesting study with regard

to energy planning and classification of energy systems models.
