CASE STUDY ON MARIAN STORES Group-3

Mr. Marian A N was born in the year 1947 at Neyattinkara thaluk in


Trivandrum district of Kerala. His father was an employee in the vagamon tea
estate. Mr.Marian came to vagamon at the age of 1 year. He did his schooling
till second standard in vagamon, and then he left his parents and moved to his
maternal home at Tamil Nadu for continuing his education. When he just
completed fourth standard he got news from his father that his mother is
seriously ill immediately he started moved to vagamon. Vagamon was waiting
with a heart breaking news for him, His mother left this world. Then he
continued his studies in Vagamon . After completing his fifth Mr.Marian worked
as a casual labourer in Vagamon.

In the year 1962 he went to Theekoy and worked as a


casual labourer to a landlord. After 6 years in the year 1968 he got a job in
Vagamon tea estate. The same year he got married to Kochuthresia and they
had five children, four sons and a daughter.

Seven years later Mr.Marian ventured into entrepreneurship by


starting a small shop where he sold tapioca and hay. Three years later in the
year 1978 he started a grocery shop. The business grew in course of time and
Mr.Marian became the most successful business man in Vagamon.By 1998 he
owned majority of the shops in Vagamon.He purchased nearly 25 acres of tea
estate, two jeeps and a lorry. The lorry was used for transportation of goods
and in its free times it was given on rent. Later He became a whole sale dealer
in grocery.He even bought commodities from the locals in vagamon.He had a
customer base of 20 shops in and around vagamon,His main retail customers
were the tea estate employees. People form far and near came to purchase
from Marian stores. By 1998 he was the owner to an assets worth over INR one
crore.

In 1999 the tea estates in vagamon faced a close down and


Mr.Marian was the worst hit. His business started facing a slow down. He
started losing his customer base and his business went in for a loss One by one
he had to sell his establishments. In the mean time he had a loan to the tune to
over INR 14 lakhs in SBT Vagamon.He was not able to repay the interest. The
bank started taking action against him and started auctioning his asset. To find a
way out Mr.Marian started selling his assets worth one crore for a mere INR 10
lakhs and he repaid the majority of his debts.

He sold his 25 acres tea estate to an Ernakulam buyer. He found it hard


to meet both end. So in order to earn bread and butter for his family he started
working as a casual labourer in the same tea estate that he once owned. With
the salary from the estate he started repaying his debts and looking after his
family. In 2004 he opened yet another grocery shop in front of his house at
Kottamala road. This shop is near the quarters of tea estate worker which
constitute of 100 families so most of his customer’s were tea estate workers.
Apart from groceries he also sold milk and bakery items. Milk is supplied from
Kurisumala Ashramam.Maxium sales in his current shop is for sweets. He
purchases goods from vagamon. His younger son who is a jeep driver also helps
him in the business. Today he has an average business of nearly INR 300 per
day. Now he posses 12 cents of land. He has taken loans from SBT Vagamon and
a kudumbasree loan. Sales occur largely on Sundays and Saturdays when the tea
estate employees get their wages. Marian sells goods on a credit basis.He gets
the money back on a monthly as well as in a weekly basis. Mr.Marian is facing
heavy competition from Ration shop, supplyco and neeti store which can sell
goods in a much lower rate than his. Though Mr Marian is facing great
competition he is trying hard to survive in Vagamon.
