Introduction
Flowserve is the recognized world leader in supplying pumps, valves, seals, automation, and services to the
power, oil, gas, chemical, and other industries. With more than 16,000 employees in more than 50 countries,
we combine our global reach with a local presence. Flowserve has a history that is long and distinct, tracing
its history to 1840 with the earliest application of steam pumping engines. Flowserve has grown into a driving
force in the pump marketplace. No other pump company has the depth or breadth of expertise in successful
application of pre-engineers, engineered, and special purpose pumps and systems. Flowserve's success across
markets and regions worldwide demonstrates our continued strength throughout various industries.

The scale, scope and complexity of the oil and gas industry are almost incomprehensible. On every continent
and in every ocean, the world's largest and most technologically advanced companies extract millions of
barrels of oil each day. Over the course of a year, almost 3000 billion cubic meters of natural gas are
harvested. Approximately 3.25 million kilometers (2.0 million miles) of pipelines along with a vast fleet of the
largest ships on Earth transport this oil and gas to gas plants and refineries for processing into fuels,
lubricating oils, waxes, asphalt and petrochemical feedstock. The people, products and services of Flowserve
play a crucial role in the day-to-day operational success and the future technological advancement of the
world's largest and most critical industry. Flowserve produces a wide range of heavy- duty, high-horsepower
pumps for the oil and gas production and pipeline services. Flowserve offers the world's most complete line
of API 610 pumps with the widest range of hydraulic coverage, pressure and temperature capabilities.
Wherever oil and gas are produced, transported and processed, you will find Flowserve petroleum flow and
control products and systems.

Flowserve can provide all aspects for the pump life cycle from inquiry to installation, startup and aftermarket
support. Aftermarket support for pumping equipment can be a critical consideration during the evaluation
process. As outlined in this document, Flowserve maintains a network of technical support engineers, service
and repair centers, fast response centers, and regional parts services offices, assuring the highest available
level of service in the world. This far-reaching network provides:
- Customer service technicians on call 24 / 7 to respond to customer needs and to provide reliable
solutions
- Immediate shipment of inventoried components
- Quick turnaround manufacturing for all non-stock components

To summarize, the benefits of a partnership with Flowserve include:

- Advanced technology solutions
- Outstanding product reliability
- World class products
- Service and support throughout the equipment life cycle
- Application expertise
- Competitive price and delivery

Flowserve looks forward to working with you on this Project. As a complete company, you can count on
Flowserve to manage your fluid handling requirements today, while anticipating your needs for tomorrow.

1. SCOPE

Scope of the procedure is to define when and how to apply the warm-up
process for single and double stages pumps.

When it’s necessary for a pump to come up to operating temperature before it is

started up or to keep it ready to start at rated temperature, provision should be
made for a warm-up flow to pass through the pump.

The warm-up has the purpose to avoid severe thermal shocks to the pump as
the result of sudden liquid temperature changes and to avoid the pump start-up
with internal fluid temperature below pour point.

The customer should arrange the warm-up of single and two stages process
pumps according to chapter 6 paragraph 2.11 of API 686 listed below.

2. API 686 WARM-UP LINES

Machinery handling hot materials greater than 150°C (300°F) or high pour point
materials shall be provided with warm-up lines to obtain and maintain
machinery temperature. Warm-up lines shall be provided with sufficient flanges
to allow the piping spool between the machine and the outlet check valve to be
removed and/or aligned separately from the warm-up line.

NOTE: Warm-up line flanges allow removal of small piping prior to rigging of
machine piping spools. This prevents inadvertent damage to the small piping
during rigging.

• One NPS 1 or larger reverse flow bypass line shall be provided around
the discharge check valve.

• For all double suction and multistage machines, at least two NPS 1 or
larger reverse flow bypass lines shall be provided. One bypass line is
around the discharge check valve. The second line bypasses the check
valve and is connected into the machinery casing drain.

NOTE: Some machinery may require an orifice or globe valve in each warm-up
line to break down pressure and control the flow rate. Care should be exercised
to ensure detrimental machine rotation does not occur.

• Warm-up lines shall be heat traced and insulated if the product will
solidify at expected ambient temperatures. Warm-up lines shall be
insulated to protect personnel from burns if located where normally have
access for operation or maintenance of the machinery.

Flow Solutions Group - Worthington S.r.l.

Document n. 2230.035 rev. 2 page 3 of 9

• Warm-up lines shall be evaluated for adequate flexibility by the piping

designer due to the possibility of differential expansion between the
machinery discharge line and the warm-up line.

• Warm-up line connections should be discussed with machinery supplier

to minimize casing distortions. Checkpoints on the bottom and top of the
casing may be necessary to measure and record the top and bottom
casing temperatures as well as pumpage temperatures.

3.4 OH3 SINGLE STAGE VERTICAL IN-LINE PUMPS (HWX/HWM)

Care must be exercised in such an installation to maintain the suction valve

open (unless the warm-up line valve is closed, as when the pump is to be
dismantled) lest the entire pump, suction valve and suction piping be subjected
to full discharge pressure.

Unless otherwise specified, Flowserve’s supplies do not include any

device/accessory to provide warm-up the pumps.

Document n. 2230.035 rev. 2 page 6 of 9

4. WARM-UP DATA REQUIREMENT

It is always advisable to avoid severe thermal shocks as the result of sudden

liquid temperature changes.
Unless special process/installation needs dictate different approach, pump
casing should be within 131°F (55°C) of the temperature of the liquid to be
pumped at time of start-up.
Preheating of the pump casing should be controlled not exceed a rate of
212°F/h (100°C/h).
The hot fluid circulation into stand-by pump should guarantee that pump
temperature is almost uniform for the whole pump. Casing differential
temperatures measured with RTD (thermocouples) between top and bottom of
the casing should be within 80°F (27°C).
