WORKSHEET IN SCIENCE 10
First Quarter
Week 7 - Day 2

MOST ESSENTIAL LEARNING COMPETENCY

Describe the possible causes of plate movement. (S10ES-Ia-j-
36.5)

OBJECTIVE
Describe and simulate seafloor spreading. S10ES-Ia-j-36.5.3

WHAT’S IN

The creation of new sea floor at midocean spreading centers and its
destruction in subduction zones is one of the many cycles that cause the Earth to
experience constant change.

WHAT’S NEW

Activity 1. Fix Me!

Directions: Arrange from 1 to 5 the process on how seafloor spreading occurs.

__________ The magma flows out of the

crack, cools down and becomes the new
seafloor.
__________ Hot, less dense material form
below the earth’s crust rises towards the
surfaces of the mid-ocean ridge.
__________ The process of seafloor spreading
allowed the creation of new bodies of
water.
__________ This material flows sideways
carrying the seafloor away from the ridge
and creates a crack in the crust.
_________ Overtime, the new oceanic crust
pushed the old oceanic crust far from the
ridge. Figure 1: Seafloor Spreading

Answer these questions:

1. In seafloor spreading, where does new crust come from?

________ 1. A device that scientists use to map the ocean floor is __________________.
________ 2. The ocean floor does not just keep spreading, it sinks beneath deep underwater
canyons called ___________________.

Answer Key:

Activity 1: Fix Me!

1.
Hot, less dense material form below the earth’s crust rises towards the surfaces of the
mid-ocean ridge. 2. This material flows sideways carrying the seafloor away from the ridge
and creates a crack in the crust. 3. The magma flows out of the crack, cools down and
becomes the new seafloor. 4. Overtime, the new oceanic crust pushed the old oceanic crust
far from the ridge. 5. The process of seafloor spreading allowed the creation of new bodies
of water.

Activity 2: Complete Me!

1. Sonar

2. Deep-ocean trench

3. Seafloor spreading

4. Subduction

5. Mid-ocean ridges
