LESSON 6: ROOTS OF QUADRATIC EQUATIONS

Pre – Activity: Answer questions on Math in Motion on page 49 from practical Math 9.
DISCUSSION:
NATURE OF ROOTS OF QUADRATIC EQUATIONS.

−b ± √ b2−4 ac
In the quadratic formula , x= , the radicand b2 - 4ac is called the
2a
discriminant. By knowing the value of b2 – 4ac, we can discriminate among the possible
numbers and types of solution of a quadratic equation. The value of the discriminant is used to
describe the solutions or roots of a quadratic equation in standard form without actually solving
for the roots. Read the summary for the possible values of the discriminant and the number and
types of solutions of a quadratic equation in Math Zone on page 49 from practical math 9. Study
example 1 on pages 49 -50 from your textbook and answer the given items on Skill Builder on
page 51 from the textbook. Read and study also example number 2 on page 51 from the
textbook then answer Skill Builder on the same page. Write your answers in your activity
notebook.

SUM AND PRODUCT OF THE ROOTS OF QUADRATIC EQUATIONS:

Remember that the general solution of a quadratic equation is determined by

. x=
−b ± √ b2−4 ac . Therefore, the roots, r and r , of any quadratic equation can be obtained
1 2

by separating the values of x in the quadratic formula. Thus,

r1 =
−b+ √ b2 −4 ac =-
b √ b2−4 ac r2 =
−b−√ b2−4 ac = - b √b 2−4 ac

Given any quadratic equation ax2 + bx + c = 0 whose roots are r1 and r2, the sum and product of
its roots are determined by the following formulas:

b c
r1 + r 2 = - and r1r2 =

The derivation of the formulas for the sum and product of the roots of quadratic equation in
standard form can be found on page 52 from Practical Math 9 book. Read and study carefully
example no. 3 on pages 53 to 54 from your textbook (Practical Math 9). Answer Skill Builder on
page 54. Write your answer your activity notebook.

DERIVING A QUADRATIC EQUATION GIVEN THE SUM AND PRODUCT OF

ITS ROOTS
A quadratic equation in standard form can be derived given the sum and product of its roots
by following this process.

ax2 + bx + c = 0 Standard form of the quadratic equation.

x2 + x + =0 Divide both sides of the equation by a.

Study example no. 4 and example no. 5 on pages 54 – 55 from Practical Math 9 then answer Skill
Builder on page 55 from your textbook (Practical Math 9). Write your answer in your activity
notebook or pad paper.

Activity Assignment: Answer Math Skills Milestones letters A – D on pages 56 – 58 from your
textbook (Practical Math 9). Write answers in a pad paper.
