Lesson 2.0
Prerequisite Skills
Learning Goal:
Today I will review skills necessary for success in the current unit.

Catholic Graduate Expectation:

Today I will create, adapt, and evaluate new ideas in light of the
common good.

Prerequisite Skills
Adding and Subtracting Radicals

To add and subtract radicals, you must have LIKE RADICALS.

LIKE RADICALS: have the SAME number under the radical sign.

Ex. √6 and 3√6 are like radicals. Ex. √10 and √7 are NOT like radicals.

Multiplying and Dividing Radicals

Radical sign: the symbol √ denotes the positive square root of a number.

Multiplication and Division Properties of Radicals:

where a,b ≥ 0

Examples: Simplify the following

Change Entire Radicals to Mixed Radicals/Write Radicals in Simplest

Form:
a) Look for the largest perfect square factor.
b) Use the multiplication property to write the radical in simplest form (i.e. write
as a "mixed radical")

Examples: Express the following as a mixed radical in simplest form.

Factor Expressions by Grouping

Factoring by grouping
Ex. 2x3 - 6x2 + 5x - 15 = (2x3 - 6x2) + (5x - 15)
= 2x2(x - 3) + 5(x - 3)
= (x - 3)(2x2 + 5)

Examples: Factor by grouping.

a) 8x2 - 6x - 4xy + 3y b) x3 - x2 - 16x + 16

Examples: Factor fully.

a) x4 - 81 b) 16x12 - 625

To solve an equation using the Quadratic Formula

1. Set the quadratic equation =0.
2. Factor out any GCF (optional).
3. Substitute the values for a, b, and c into the formula to solve for x.

Examples: Solve by using the quadratic formula. Write answer in simplest

radical form, where possible, and to one decimal place.

a) x2 + 8x - 5 = 0 b) 3x2 - 7x + 1 = 0 c) x2 + 4x + 5 = 0

Determine Equations of Quadratic Functions

To determine the equation of a function in factored form given its roots and a
point on the parabola:
1. Substitute the zeros into the factored form y = a(x - r)(x - s) for r and s.
2. Substitute the point (x, y) in for x and y.
3. Solve for the "a" value
4. Sub the "a" value into the equation

Examples: Determine the equation of each parabola given the following

conditions.
a) A parabola that passes though the point (2, -12) and has zeros at -1 and 4.

b) A parabola that has y-intercept 10 and has zeros at -4/3 and 5/2.
