Video Guidelines and Script for SRO Auditions, Fall 2020:

Please use these rules and guidelines to help you successfully prepare and submit your virtual audition
material. Read this document carefully to ensure that you understand what is required and are adhering
fully to all listed rules.

Rules:
1. All students must submit a video mp4 file to their director. The director will convert the video to
an mp3 audio file to protect student identity.
2. Your video must be submitted to your director by the deadline. Late submissions will not be
accepted.
3. Use this script when making your video.
a. String script
b. Wind script
c. Percussion script
4. Your video MUST be saved as an mp4 file. Use this link to convert your file if needed.
5. You and your instrument MUST be in the video. Make sure that you position your camera so that
you are completely visible, including your bow hand, and make sure that your music stand does
NOT hinder your visibility on camera.
6. For scales, make sure it is obvious that you are not reading from music. Scales must be
memorized. Winds - Use the starting pitch on your instrument. DO NOT TRANSPOSE.
7. Your video must be made as ONE continuous video and not multiple cuts that are spliced
together (follow the script exactly as it is written).
8. Audio and video MUST be one continuous clip and you may not splice audio to a separate video.
9. A supplemental microphone may be used if you wish, but it is not required. Phone and computer
microphone audio is also acceptable.
10. Your video MUST include all required audition material. If you are missing any component, you
will receive an automatic zero for that portion.
11. You must submit ONE video that includes all required playing material. Do NOT submit separate
videos for scales and excerpts. If you submit multiple videos, judges will only evaluate one
component.
12. Length of time between each playing portion must NOT exceed ten seconds.
13. Maximum video length is 3 minutes. Do NOT submit a video longer than three minutes. Only the
first 3:00 of the video will be adjudicated. Percussion auditions will be longer and that is
acceptable.

Tips:
1. Practice your scales with the metronome set at the prescribed tempo. Practice all scales leaving
a maximum of only ten seconds between them so you are ready to perform them back to back
when you record your video submission.
2. Arrange all needed music in a way that limits page turns as much as possible. Have all of your
music out and ready to go so that when you record, you are able to do so with minimal pauses
between audition segments.
3. Make sure your music stand is low enough or off to the side to ensure that you and your
instrument are visible in your video at all times.
4. Percussionists: there is no timpani component on this audition. Do not prepare that segment of
the etude (for those using the 2020 All-VA Etude).
5. Make sure that the lighting is as clear as possible in your video submission.
6. Make sure there is no extraneous background noise in your video.
7. Record practice takes and listen to them! When selecting a recording, ask yourself the following:
a. Can I be seen and heard clearly at all times?
b. Did I leave no more than ten seconds between audition selections?
c. Is my maximum video time within the three minute time frame?

If you have questions about any of the virtual submission requirements, please contact your director for
clarification.
