Open Piano Competition 2022 Regulations

This document contains information specific to the Open Piano Competition 2022. You are advised to refer
solely to this document for the official regulations pertaining to this competition.

Discipline

The subject of the competition is western classical solo piano music. This includes music written for
acoustic keyboard instruments (harpsichord, fortepiano, piano, etc.) from the late baroque period through
the classical and romantic till the modern time. For music composed during and after the late nineteenth
century, you must ensure that the selected works follow the classical music paradigm and not jazz or
popular styles. This competition is not an opportunity for you to stretch the definition of western classical
music but, quite contrarily, to demonstrate your ability in its most identifiable form.

Eligibility

The competition is open to all Indian nationals (including PIO and OCI card holders) born on or after
February 1, 1987. You will need to produce a valid passport for verification purposes.

Past winners of the open competition in the same discipline may not enter, including winners and honorary
prize recipients of The John Gomes Memorial Piano Competition 2010 to 2020. Those born after May 15,
2007 should note that entering this competition will preclude them from entering all future editions of the
Junior Piano Competition, the next one confirmed for May 15, 2022.

Prizes

In accordance with the fiscal policy, tax will be deducted at source from the following prizes and
prize-winners will be issued a TDS certificate. The winner’s prize may be withheld if none of the
competitors meet the expected standard.

Winner Rs. 1,00,000

Runner-up Rs. 50,000
Second runner-up Rs. 25,000
Special Mention Rs. 10,000

Format

Competitors will need to provide a single video link along with their personal details in order to enter the
competition. This video will first be used internally for pre-screening and selecting the finalists. For the
finals, the same video will be used by the external adjudication panel to select the prize recipients. The
competition will occur entirely online and the prize recipients will have the chance to perform live at
showcase events which will be held periodically across the country.

Repertoire

The repertoire for the competition is entirely free choice with a mandatory set work listed below.
Participants are advised to choose works which belong clearly to the discipline of the competition. For
instance, you may not choose jazz or pop pieces for a classical competition.

The performance duration for this competition is 13 to 16 minutes. The total length of the video submitted
should fall within these limits – including all breaks between items as well as introductory and final
courtesies, if any. Performers should decide the appropriate length of silences between pieces and at the
start and end of the programme.

The set work for this competition is:

(Only) Prelude from Prelude & Fugue in B minor (BWV 893)
from The Well-Tempered Clavier (Book 2) by J. S. Bach

Notes on Repertoire

● Choose pieces which show us your technical and musical ability in the chosen discipline.
● Choose pieces which are well within your grasp and do not feel like a struggle.
● Try to balance your programme in terms of styles and moods.
● We are not looking to see how great a piece of music is, but how great a performer you are.
● In addition to the set work, you may choose just one other more substantial piece which showcases
your multiple facets as a performer.
● You may choose individual pieces or movements from large scale works such as sonatas, song cycles,
etc.
● You may use your discretion when deciding whether or not to play a repeat. Standard performing
practice should be followed: exposition repeats may be omitted, da capo repeats may not.
● You may perform your pieces using the score, but you may not use a page turner. Memorize or use
photocopies of short sections to ensure that the music is not interrupted by page turns.
● You will generally not be required to provide scores but you should be prepared to provide them via email
should the need arise.

Video recording guidelines

● You must record your entire programme in a single uninterrupted, unedited take.
● You may use a video camera or a phone camera in the landscape mode provided that the resolution is
sufficiently high (minimum 360p). Sound quality is very important and should not be distorted.
● Please ensure that the acoustics of the room in which you record is neither too live/wet nor dry/dead so
that the sound is clear and the technical and expressive details of the performer are evident.
● Please use a mount of some kind for the recording device, such as a tripod, to ensure that the image is
completely still and do not change the position of the device during the performance.
● You should clip the videos to ensure that the total duration falls within the set limit for the performance
duration.
● You are strongly advised to record audio and video on the same device, as synchronization issues
between sound and video will not be accepted under any circumstances.
● Make sure that no voices are heard on the recordings and please do not say anything in your recordings.
Try to ensure, to the best of your ability, a quiet environment. Occasional disturbances from your
surroundings will not count against you.
● Try to make your videos look good. We suggest dark ambient lighting with warm white lamps focussed
on you and your instrument and a clutter free setup. Be sure to dress in something appropriate for an
online concert.
● You must record your entire programme on an acoustic piano, well in tune.
● The camera should be placed at the treble end of the piano and provide a clear view of the entire
keyboard, your entire body (including your feet and the pedals of the piano) and at least a side profile of
your face.

How to enter

Once you have prepared your programme, record and upload your video to YouTube. When you upload your
video ensure that it is a private, unlisted video which can be viewed in any country without needing to

The title should simply be your name and the description should simply be a list of the pieces you perform
along with timestamp links to allow the viewer to jump to the start of a different piece. Note that you will
need to change the title of your video and make it public at some point during the final stage of
adjudication, but you must only do so when you have been intimated by us.

Once your upload is complete, send us an email at conbrio@furtados.in with the subject as Entry for
