Malaysian Junior Jazz Piano Competition 2023

RULES AND REGULATIONS

ELIGIBILITY
Age Categories (as of 2023, regardless of month):
Category A: 5-8 years old
Category B: 9-12 years old
Category C: 13-17 years old

1. The competition is open to all Malaysian citizens around the world.


2. Each applicant is only allowed one submission of one category.
3. Entry into the wrong age category will be automatically void and fee is non-refundable.
4. The Jury’s decision is final.
5. Performance from memory is compulsory.

ENTRY FEE
1. Each submission is subject to an Entry Fee of RM60.00, to be paid in full via online bank transfer
to the following account:

2. The entry fee includes a certificate of participation and one complimentary audience ticket to the
junior jazz competition finals held in KLPAC on 10 June 2023.

ENTRY PROCESS

1. Prepare and record your video entry.


2. Upload your video to social media (Facebook or Instagram) with the correct hashtags and ensure
the video/post is set to public. Use the hashtags:
#mjpfjuniorjazz2023
3. Download and complete the Entry Form which can be found here. Please ensure all required
details on the Entry Form are correct.
4. Submit Entry Form, Video Link and Proof of Payment to mjazzpianofest@gmail.com by
2359hrs, 21 April 2023 (GMT+8).
5. Submission period is 19 - 21 April 2023. Emails received after 2359hrs, 21 April 2023
(GMT+8) will not be considered and fees are non refundable.
6. Please note the following when you submit to the email address given above :

Email Subject: PARTICIPANT NAME_DOB_CATEGORY

EXAMPLE: JOHN DOE_31 DEC 2010_CATEGORY C

REPERTOIRE AND PERFORMANCE

1. Entry Video Recordings and Finals should not exceed:


- Category A: 3 minutes
- Category B: 5 minutes
- Category C: 7 minutes
2. Consist of TWO pieces: one compulsory selection from the Malaysian Real Book arrangements
(refer to Appendix A) and one free choice OR two selections from the Malaysian Real Book
arrangements list.
3. Arrangements for compulsory Malaysian Real Book songs can be found here.
4. The free choice selection should be made from a selection of contemporary music styles, or
re-arrangements in such styles.
5. Both pieces should be contrasting in style.

COMPETITION JUDGING CRITERIA


1. Interpretation
- Effectively display a clear understanding of the style of music.
2. Execution
- Ability to display strong technical facility on the instrument.
3. Embellishment
- Ability to improvise on an existing arrangement using concepts from the jazz idiom.

VIDEO SUBMISSION GUIDELINES


1. Each participant is required to submit one continuous video recording without any cuts,
containing both pieces within the permissible duration as given.
2. Video editing that alters musical elements of a performance, such as tempo, pitch, rhythm and
dynamics is strictly not permitted. Such editing will automatically result in disqualification.
3. The participant’s video must be recorded in landscape mode, with the participant and piano
clearly visible. The use of a tripod is strongly encouraged for recording.
4. Checklist of what to do in your video recording:

- Start by introducing yourself by mentioning your name clearly.


- Then state the names of the pieces to be performed.
- Perform both your songs, in the order of your choice.
- Optional: add participant's details in written format at the side of the video (without
blocking the performer) e.g. entrant’s name, title of piece, and teacher’s/studio’s name.

SCREENING VIDEO
1. Entry submission is by uploading the video into Facebook or Instagram. Teachers, music schools
and/or parents are welcomed to complete this step.
2. Please ensure that the privacy setting for the video is set to public so that the adjudicators can
access the video. In the event we are unable to access the participant’s video, then we reserve the
right to exclude the entry from being judged.
3. All social media entries either on Facebook or Instagram must include the event hashtag:
#mjpfjuniorjazz2023

FINALS
1. Finalists for each category will be notified via email by 9 May 2023.
2. The finals will be held on Saturday, 10 June 2023 at KL Performing Arts Center (KLPAC).
3. Finalists will be invited to perform live the same two pieces played during the screening stage.

TRAVEL AND ACCOMMODATION


1. Finals for all categories will be conducted live at KL Performing Arts Center (KLPAC).
2. Finalists are required to bear their own travel and accommodation expenses, should they be
selected and choose to participate in the live performance session at KLPAC.
3. All participants, finalists or not, will receive 1 complimentary audience ticket (worth RM10) to
the finals competition.

PRIZES (ALL CATEGORIES)


First place winner: RM 500 + a physical and digital copy of the Malaysian Real Book
1st Runner-up: RM 300 + a physical and digital copy of the Malaysian Real Book
2nd Runner-up: RM 200 + a physical and digital copy of the Malaysian Real Book

All top 3 winners will also receive 2 free complimentary tickets to the Saturday evening concert.
