PHILHARMONIC YOUTH WINDS: A VIRTUAL PERFORMANCE

Dear musicians of Philyouth,

We hope everyone is safe and healthy amidst this tough time! It has been a while since we
last made music together, and we would like to gather everyone for a fun virtual project to
keep in touch with our instruments and add some colour to this difficult period :-) We will
be recording a fun rendition of the 3rd movement (Riding That Rainbow) of City of Dreams,
by Benjamin Yeo.

We hope not just to give our friends music to listen to, but also a fun and comedic video to
accompany it - please read on for the recording procedures, and let your principals know if
you would like to participate next Monday, 11 May! Principals, please send the full list of
participants to the Principals WhatsApp group, and oversee the allocation of parts within
your sections. The deadline for video submission is next Sunday, 17 May!

Thank you all for being a part of this unique project amidst such unique times. We hope you
enjoy this rather revolutionary process of music-making, and certainly look forward to
hearing your performances real soon!

If you have any questions, please feel free to drop a message to Darren (Flute), Priya (Oboe)
or Erica (Eupho)!

Yours sincerely,
Philyouth Exco

These are the recording procedures - please read through them carefully!

the same time, one to video record yourself and one to record just your audio, in case
the audio quality in the video file is less than ideal.
3. This link contains a conductor video, in which Mr Chiang is conducting with reference
to a recording with a click track. Please watch Mr Chiang’s conducting, while listening
to the click track with earphones as you record!

8. Please choose a pleasant background for your video
9. Record in landscape orientation (1280 x 720).
10. Make sure you and your instrument are fully visible within the frame, and leave some
space above, below, and to the sides of you. Make sure your face isn’t obscured by
your instrument!
11. Please ensure the video resolution is of a good quality, and that you are always in focus
(regardless of cameos and gimmicks).
12. Ensure the venue is well-lit, and that you are not back-lit (your back should not face a
window with direct sunlight) or shadowed.

GUIDELINES FOR AUDIO

13. Record in a quiet room, preferably with windows closed
14. Switch off fans, air conditioning and any beeping devices
15. For softer instruments: recording in the evening or night might be helpful as ambient
noise may be lower
16. Do not leave the audio device too close to your instrument as the volume levels may
peak, and the audio might crack - you could do some testing before proceeding to
record the full piece
● Brasses please stand at least 1 to 2m away from your recording device.
17. Do listen to your recording when you are done, and check that it is of suitable quality
before submitting.
18. Please tune to A = 442 Hz, and please keep an eye and ear out for tuning throughout
the recording as we will really not be able to do anything about intonation during the
editing process!
