Tutorial 4 : Noise in Analogue Systems 2018/2019

1. Describe the characteristics of Additive White Gaussian Noise (AWGN)

2. a) What is the significance of calculating pre-detection signal-to-noise ratio in Normal AM

modulation?
b) What is the significance of calculating pre-detection signal-to-noise ratio in FM modulation?

3. Consider an analog baseband communication system with additive white noise of the power spectra
density 𝜂⁄2 = 10−9 𝑊/𝐻𝑧, and a distortionless transmission channel. The signal to be transmitted is
an audio signal with 4 kHz bandwidth. At the receiver end, an ideal LPF with bandwidth of 8 kHz is
used to limit the noise power at the output. Calculate the output noise power. Note magnitude response
of the LPF is unit.

4. Consider an AM system with AWGN having the psd 𝜂⁄2 = 10 −12 𝑊/𝐻𝑧. Assume that the baseband
message signal 𝑚(𝑡) has a bandwidth of 4 kHz and the amplitude distribution as shown. The signal is
demodulated by envelop detection and appropriate post-detection filtering. Find the minimum value of
the carrier amplitude that yield a post-detection signal-to-noise ratio, 𝑆𝑁𝑅𝑜 ≥ 40 𝑑𝐵

5. A system is transmitting an audio signal which has a bandwidth of 10 kHz, with an output SNR of 40 dB.
Assume that the channel introduces a 40 dB power loss and channel noise in AWGN with power spectral
density 𝜂⁄2 = 10−9 𝑊/𝐻𝑧. Calculate the transmission bandwidth and the required transmitter power if
the system is
a) DSB
b) SSB

6. Consider an FM broadcast system with frequency deviation ∆𝑓 = 75 𝑘𝐻𝑧 and Bandwidth, 𝐵 = 15 𝑘𝐻𝑧.
Assuming the message signal power content, 𝑃𝑚 = 0.5, find the output SNR and calculate the improvement
(in dB) over the baseband system.
