MODULE 2 CIVIL ENGINEERING PROGRAM

Module 2 presents the definition of civil Engineering as defined by the Commission on


Higher Education (CHED) through its CMO 92, s. 2017. This module presents the history
of the civil engineering program of Our Lady of Fatima University. In addition, the field
of study, career opportunities, organizational chart of the college, official college logo,
allied engineering programs, and prescribed uniform for BSCE students will be
presented in this Module.

1. DEFINITION

Civil Engineering is a profession that applies the basic principles of science in


conjunction with mathematical and computational tools to solve problems associated
with developing and sustaining civilized life on our planet.

2. NATURE OF FIELD OF STUDY


Civil Engineering works are generally one-of-a-kind projects; they are often grand
in scale; and they usually require cooperation among professionals of many different

disciplines. The completion of a civil engineering project involves the solution of


technical problems in which information from numerous sources and countless non-
technical factors play a significant role. Some of the most common examples of civil
engineering works include bridges, buildings, dams, airports and hangars, ports and
harbors, highways and railways, tunnels, river and shore improvements, lighthouses,
dry docks, irrigations, flood protection, drainage, water supply, and towers.
Civil Engineering is one of the broadest engineering disciplines both in terms of
the range of problems that fall within its purview and in the range of knowledge to
solve those problems.

3. SPECIFIC PROFESSIONS/CAREERS/OCCUPATIONS FOR GRADUATES


The scope of practice of Civil Engineering is defined in the Civil Engineering Law
in 1950 or R.A. 544 and embrace services in the form of consultation, design,
preparation of plans, specifications, estimates, erection, installation and supervision of
construction of streets, bridges, highways, railroads, airports and hangars, port works,
canals, river and shore improvements, lighthouses, and dry docks; buildings, fixed
structures for irrigation, flood protection, drainage, water supply and sewerage works;
demolition of permanent structures; and tunnels.

5. HISTORY OF CIVIL ENGINEERING PROGRAM OF OUR LADY OF FATIMA UNIVERSITY


The Our Lady of Fatima University (OLFU) started offering the Bachelor of
Science in Civil Engineering Program in 2012 when OLFU acquired the East Central
Colleges (ECC).

The program is distinct to Pampanga Campus amongst all the five campuses of
the University. It only started with ten students in 2012-2013, increased to 60 students
the following school year. Currently, the College has 387 students.

The campus is situated in a very accessible location and manned by the


dedicated and well-known faculty members in the field, each with more than decade/s
of experience in teaching the professional subjects. The OLFU-Pampanga was marketed
as one of the schools which offers with affordable tuition fees in the BS Civil
Engineering program in the region. The one of the cheapest within Pampanga. This is to
help those who seek to become Civil Engineers someday looking for quality education
but cannot afford to their matriculation fees.

In OLFU-Pampanga, classes are held in fully air-conditioned rooms and are given
the experience of new facilities.

7. COLLEGE OF CIVIL ENGINEERING LOGO


The college of Engineering Logo is a property of the university and therefore
cannot be used for any other purposes outside the university unless with given
permission from the administration.

Marketing products bearing the College logo is also prohibited.

8. College of Civil Engineering Official Uniform – Academic Year 2018 – 2019

All incoming first year and transferee of BS Civil Engineering students are
required to wear the new prescribed uniform as approved by the University President.
Failure to wear prescribed uniform will mean violation of the Student Handbook given
by the University.
