1. Let N be the set of all integers, + and · denote the binary operations addition and multiplication
respectively. Then show that (N, +) is abelian group and (N, ·) is semigroup.
2. Show that the vectors (2, 0, −2), (0, 2, 0) and (2, 0, 2) are linearly independent. Express (0, 0, 3)
as a linear combination of the vectors given above.
3. Consider the vector space H = {(x, y, z)|x + y + z = 0}. Show that H is a vector subspace of
R3 and dim(H)=2. Find a suitable basis in H.
4. Show that h(z1 , w1 ), (z2 , w2 )i = z1∗ z2 +w1∗ w2 qualifies to be the inner product of (z1 , w1 ), (z2 , w2 ) ∈
C2 . Show that the vectors (1, i) and (1, −i) are orthogonal.
5. Prove the Cauchy-Schwarz identity:
|hu, vi|2 ≤ ||u||2 ||v||2 ,
u,v are vectors in a complex vector space.
6. Show that the functions

1 sin x cos x sin 2x cos 2x
√ , √ , √ , √ , √ ,···
2π π π π π
form a set of orthonormal basis vectors in the vector space of continuous
Rπ real functions defined
over the interval [−π, π], with inner product defined by hf, gi = −π f (x)g(x)dx.

7. Examine whether the operator Âf (x) = xf 0 (x) + f (x) is linear or not.
8. Find the matrix elements of the linear transformation T on R2 which maps the basis (1, 0),
(0, 1) to (1, 1), (0, −1) respectively.
9. If Â, B̂, Ĉ are linear operators, then prove that
h i h i h i
ÂB̂, Ĉ = Â B̂, Ĉ + Â, Ĉ B̂.

10. Show that the transformation f : R2 → R3 , defined by f (x, y) = (x + y, x − 2y, 3x + y) is non

singular. Is f invertible?
