Water Bottle Flip Challenge Lab

Objective: How does volume of water affect the ability of the flipper to land the flips?

“Land” - a term used to describe the water bottle that has just rotated 360 degrees and lands on a flat
surface on it’s bottom facing, without tipping over.

Hypothesis:

I think the water bottle that will make the most lands during a one minute period will be the water
bottle with the highest/medium/lowest (circle your answer) volume, because

Materials:

Water Bottles with 3 different Volumes

Procedure:

1. You can do this as individuals in the group, where everyone gets a turn to flip the water bottles
or as a group.
2. With your group, flip the water bottle and land it as many times as you can in 1 minute for the
water bottle with the lowest volume. If it falls over, it doesn’t count.
3. Record your data in the data table.
4. Repeat steps 1-2 with other 2 water bottles of varying volume.

Conclusion Questions:

1. Summarize what you did in the lab today.

2. Which Bottle had the most lands and why do you think that happened?

3. How many lands do you think you would make with each bottle in a 10 minute time period?
Show your work.

a. Lowest Volume –
b. Medium Volume –
c. Highest Volume –

4. What are some things that happened in your experiment that you would change next time to
get more accurate results?
