“Make your Volcano Erupt”

I. Objective:
Explain what happens when volcanoes erupt.

These are the materials you need to conduct this activity.

II. Materials:
 6 Erupting Volcano Models
 4 (50mL) Beakers
 Baking Soda
 Vinegar
 Stirring Rod
 Red food color
 Spatula spoon
 Ruler
 Goggles

These are the procedures that you need to follow for you to be able to conduct this activity.

III. Procedures/ Method

1. Make sure the volcano is in the clear tray before performing the experiment.
2. Mix the 50ml vinegar (add – on pressure) and food coloring together thoroughly to make a
homogenous solution (set aside first).
3. Put the given baking soda (magma) in each set up to the lava tube.
4. Add the homogenous solution to the lava tube.
Note: Make sure to measure the height reached by the bubbles in each set up and be able to describe the
bubbles produced.
5. Stand back and watch the lava erupt!
6. Repeat steps 1 – 5 for set -up B and C.

Make sure to follow the safety precautions for your safety.

Safety Precautions:
1.Wear your goggles and safety gloves properly in doing the experiment.
2.Do not attempt to taste the mixture in the experiment.
3. Wash your hands and the laboratory apparatus which was used in performing the activity.
IV. Data/ Results
Bubbles produced (less, more, Height reached by the bubbles
great) (Cm)

Set-up A (2.5 ml) Baking Soda

Set-up B (5 ml) Baking Soda
Set-up C (10 ml) Baking Soda
V. Guide Questions:
1.Which set-up produced less bubbles? More bubbles?

2.Which set-up reached the highest peak? Lowest peak?

3.How does the amount of baking soda affect the bubbles produced?

4.How does the amount of baking soda affect the height reached by the bubbles?

5.Based on the experiment, what factors affected the result for each set – up?

6.Based on the experiment, what factors do you think affect volcanic eruption?

VI. Conclusion
I therefore conclude that
