At the end of the lesson, the students shall be

able to:
1.explain how latitude affects climate,
2.identify the latitude and longitude using a
globe,
3.recognize the effect of the Philippine’s
location on Earth to its climate.
ACTIVITY
Activity: “When the Sun’s Rays Strike”
Students study the given illustration then answer the guide
questions.
Guide Questions:
1. How much is the tilt of the earth’s axis?
2. Which part of the earth receives most of the sun’s rays?
3. Why does the amount of heat received by places far from the
equator become less?
4. Why are the coldest places on Earth found near the poles?
5. Why are places with high temperature found at the equator?
6. How does latitude affect climate?
FACTOR AFFECTING
CLIMATE:
LATITUDE
CLIMATE WEATHER
CLIMATE
•is the average weather
in a particular region
over a fairly long period
of time. Average
weather over many
years.
WEATHER
• refers to short-term
changes in the
atmosphere. Can
change within minutes
or hours
What is latitude?
What is latitude?
Latitude is the
distance north or
south of the equator,
measured in degrees
from 0° at the equator
to 90° at the poles.
What is the effect of Latitude on
Temperature?
What is the effect of Latitude on
Temperature?
1. Sunlight Intensity
• The intensity of
sunlight decreases as
we move away from
the equator towards
the poles.
2. Duration of Sunlight
• The number of daylight
hours also changes with
latitude. At the equator,
day and night are each
approximately 12 hours
long throughout the year.
Earth’s Tilt and
Seasons
The Earth’s axis is
tilted at an angle of
about 23.5 degrees
relative to its orbit
around the sun.
Climatic Zones
Climatic Zones

Due to the effects

of latitude on
temperature, the
Earth is divided
into three main
climatic zones
1.Tropical Zone
• This zone is located between the
Tropic of Cancer (23.5° N latitude)
and the Tropic of Capricorn (23.5° S
latitude). It receives the most direct
sunlight throughout the year,
resulting in a hot climate.
2. Temperate Zone
• This zone lies between 23.5° and 66.5°
latitude in both hemispheres. It
experiences moderate temperatures with
distinct seasons due to variations in
sunlight intensity and duration.
3. Polar Zone
• This zone is located beyond 66.5°
latitude in both hemispheres. It receives
the least amount of sunlight, resulting
in a cold climate.
The Philippines is located in the latitude
near the equator. How would you relate this
to the climate the Philippines has?
What about those located near the
poles? What can you say about
their climate?
Thank you
Write T if the answer is TRUE and F if the answer is FALSE.
1. North and South poles have higher temperatures than the places near
equator
2. The Earth’s tilt and orbit around the sun do affect the weather
patterns or climates we experience.
3. Latitude does define three major climate zones on Earth: the tropics,
the temperate zones, and the polar zones.
4. The closer a place is to the equator, the warmer its climate.
5. As we move towards the poles from the equator, the sunlight
becomes more spread out and less direct, resulting in cooler
temperatures.
