Weather and Climate

Grade 5
Lesson -1
The Pledge

I ______commit to be vigilant and bear in mind at all times, the risk to

myself, my friends and family from COVID-19.
I promise to take all necessary precautions that prevent the spread of
this deadly virus. I promise to follow and encourage others to follow the
key COVID Appropriate Behaviours.
To always wear a mask / face cover, especially when in public places.
To maintain a minimum distance of 6 feet from others.
To wash my hands, frequently and thoroughly with soap and water.
Together we will win this fight against COVID-19.

I have learnt Yes Almost Not clear No

1. to
define and differentiate
between term weather
and climate

2. to identify the
factors that affect
climate

3. Identify the different

seasons

4
Do you understand what it states?

5
So, what is right to ask...

"How's the weather today?"

Or
"How is the climate today ?"

6
Are Weather and Climate a different terms? OR weather and climate mean the same?
7
Today we would be learning about:

1.
Difference
between
the weather
and climate

8
Weather

It is the condition of the atmosphere of a place at the particular time

9
Weather of a place can change rapidly

Clear in the morning Cloudy in the afternoon Rainy in the evening

10
Weather can be ...
Snowy Cloudy

Thunders and
Sunny Pleasant Thundering Rains

Dusty Humid Rainy Stormy

11
What do we call a scientist who studies weather and climate?

Meteorologists

12
Think!
How the change in the weather affects your
planned trip?
Weather affects us in many ways. It affects
what we do and what we wear.
Meteorologists measure weather conditions in
different places and use this information to
report and make forecasts about future
weather conditions. This is useful because
people can be warned about hazardous
weather conditions such as storms and floods.

13
Do you know what Climate means?

14
Climate

• It is the regular pattern of weather that a place has for over 30 long
years together is called climate.
• We studied in the previous chapter that different temperature
zones are also known as different climatic zones.
15
• A place that usually has a very hot summer and a very wet monsoon has
a hot and wet climate.
• A place that has a very cold winter and a pleasant summer has a cold
climate.

Let's look for the weather and climate of France.

• Locate France on the world political map and look for, it is in which
temperature zone.
• To know the weather of France for that particular day, is a search
work which will be given as a H.W
• The students will look up for the France weather report.

18
Rise in Temperature globally over the years

Climate change is a big issue in the news these days, but why is it such a big deal?
Because the glaciers are melting with the rise in temperature
19
Glaciers around 80's
Glaciers now in 2022
20
Seasons
It is the regular pattern of the weather that a place has over a long
time because of the revolution of the earth around the sun. It
divides the year into four seasons (spring, summer, autumn, and
winter).

Summer Autumn Winter Spring

21
Summer : usually April, May, and June are the summer
months in northern India.
• It can be very hot in the plains, desert and plateau regions
but less hot in the coastal areas. Hilly areas have a pleasant
summer.

Monsoon: usually June, July and August are the monsoon

months.
• The monsoon arrives in early June and gradually moves
over the rest of the country. 22
Winter : usually November,
December and January are the
winter months.
• It is very cold in the
mountains, hills and at night in
desert areas.
• The inland parts that are far
away from the sea are very cold.
• Parts of peninsular India do
not get cold.
• South-Eastern coastal region
of India has winter monsoon. Inland places
23
Autumn comes before winter between
the end of monsoon and mid-October.

During autumn, trees in some areas

shed their leaves, which turn red and
brown before they fall to the ground.

Spring comes just before the summer

and is pleasant – neither too hot nor too
cold – with new leaves on trees.

Weather and Climate
Grade 5
Lesson -2
Today we will learn about...
The factors that affect climate

1. Latitude or distance from the equator

2. Altitude or height of land

3. Distance from the sea

4. Winds

26
1. Latitude or distance from the equator
• The equator gets the most direct rays of the sun.

• The place near to the equator is the hottest whereas the place far away from the
equator is cooler.

Search work: Find out 2 places at different latitudes using atlas

27
2. Altitude or height of land
• The altitude of a place or its height above the sea level affects the climate.

• Highlands like mountains and plateaus are cooler than the land at the sea level.

Search work as H.w : Look for 2 places with different altitude,

note it down and bring it to the class.
28
What do you think ?
Is it possible to have a high
mountain peak covered with snow
near the equator?

29
Mount Kilimanjaro is in Africa
and is near the equator but still it
has snow on its top. It is at the
altitude of 5500 meters above.
Search work as H.w: Look for 2 more places near the
equator that has snow or are extremely freezing. Note
it down and bring it to the class.

30
3. Distance from the sea
• Water heats or cools more slowly than land.

• The sea near to the land has an effect on the climate in both summer and winter.

Search work: Look for a place near the coast and a place which is inland using atlas.

31
Summer:
Places far away from the sea or inland places are hot because the land heats
up very quickly. Places by the sea remain cooler as water takes a long time
to heat.

Winter:
Places by the sea are warmer as water cools slowly so it keeps seaside places
warm. Places away from the sea are cold as land here loses heat very fast.

32
• Places near the sea are more humid.
• Such places have lot of water vapours in the air.
• High humidity is uncomfortable and does not let the
perspiration dry easily.

• Andaman and Nicobar island is near the equator and is very

hot and humid.

33
The students will be asked to set up a weather station outside and inside
the classroom and collect data for two weeks. Soil and water outside the
class will be placed to show land heats up and cools down faster as
compared to water. A thermometer also to be placed inside and outside
the classroom. Randomly a students will be assigned to bring
a thermometer and two bowls.
(Each student has to collect the data and note it down for two
weeks in their SST notebook and maintain it properly)

34
South-West Monsoon North-East Monsoon
wind direction wind direction

4. Winds

The direction of the regular winds that blow at a particular time of the
year has an effect on climate.
example : monsoon winds
35
South-West monsoon winds
blow from early June to
September and brings rain to
most of the India.

36
North-East monsoon
winds blow
in december and
January bring rain to the
south- eastern coastal
region of India.

37
Weather kit Activity: Students will be taken to the
basketball court and Weather Kit from the Science lab.
will be used for checking air temperature and Wind
direction.
