G N S S PROJECT

WIDENING OF FLOOD FLOW CANAL FROM OWK RESERVOIR

TO GANDIKOTA RESERVOIR
NOTE ON DESIGN FEATURES OF SUPER PASSAGE AT KM 15.498

1. Necessity of the structure:

The Flood flow Canal (FFC) of GNSS Project from Owk reservoir to Gandikota
reservoir is proposed to widen to increase the carrying capacity from existing 566.330
cumecs to 849.510 cumecs. There is an existing Super passage at km 15.498 of the
FFC which is to be widened (to increase the structure length) according to the
proposed new HP’s of the canal. The canal is being widened on right side of the
existing alignment at the structure location. Accordingly the modified structure design
and drawings are prepared by increasing the structure length on right side of the
alignment i.e. inspection path side.

2. The Hydraulic particulars :

The hydraulic particulars of the GNSS Flood flow Canal at the proposed site ie. at
Km. 15.498 are as under.

S.No. Description Particulars

1. Discharge (Required) 849.510 Cumecs
2. Discharge (Designed) 851.455 Cumecs
3. Bed Width 54.000 M
4. F.S.D. 8.500 M
5. Side Slopes 0.5:1
6. Surface fall 1 in 5740
7. Value of ‘n’ 0.0275
8. Velocity 1.720 /Sec
9. Top width of banks (L/R) 5.00 M / 8.00 M
10. Canal Bed Level + 215.298 M
11. Full Supply Level + 223.798 M
12. Top of Bank Level + 224.798 M

The hydraulic particulars of the drain at the proposed site are as under.

S.No. Description Particulars

1. Catchment Area 130.073 Sq. km.
2. Max Flood Discharge 562.333 Cumecs
3. Drain Bed Level at 50 mts U/S + 225.273 M

4. Existing / proposed Trough Level + 224.890 M

3. Maximum Flood Discharge:

The Maximum Flood Discharge using Dicken’s formula works out to 562.333 cumecs
for a catchment area of 130.073 sq.km using formula Q = CM3/4 where C = 14.60.
4. Proposals:

Since the DBL i.e. +225.273 M at the point of crossing is above FSL of canal i.e.
+223.798 M, a super passage is proposed at this location for drain discharge. The
trough level is fixed at +224.890 m (existing trough level) adopting a free board of
0.552 m (existing) above the canal FSL.

5. Vent Way for Drain (Super Structure):

12 vents of 4.50 m X 4.380 m are proposed for carrying the drain water across the
canal with 6 spans of total length of 78.80 m between c/c of abutments. The trough
slab and beams are proposed in RCC M30 grade with 0.35 m thick trough slab, 0.45m
thick middle beams and 0.50m thick side beams. The beams are designed for the self
weight and water load and are found to be safe. The slab is designed spanning in
between beams and the slab thickness provided is 0.35 m with 150mm thick
haunches.

6. Floor Concrete:
600 mm thick floor concrete in CC M 15 grade is proposed between wing walls in
U/S and D/S of drain and 75 mm thick wearing coat in CC M 20 grade is proposed
over the floor concrete in drain portion. 40 mm thick sealing coat in CC M 35 grade is
proposed in the drain trough portion over the slab.

7. Foundation strata:
The foundation of piers and abutments, wings, returns, road bridge are proposed to
resting on hard strata.

8. Sub Structure:
a. The bottom level of foundation for the pier and abutments under trough are
proposed at +213.798 M and +220.000 M respectively. Pier and abutments are
proposed in CC M 15 grade.
b. The wings and returns are proposed in C.C. 15 grade. The stability is checked
and the stresses worked out at the top of foundation in concrete and at the
foundation strata on soil are found to be with in the allowable limits.

9. Foundations:
a. Pier: Foundations are proposed in C.C. M15 grade.
b. Abutments: Foundations are proposed in C.C. M15 grade.
c. Wings and Returns: Wings and returns are proposed in C.C. M15 grade.
d. Apron & cut offs: Drop, Apron & cut offs are proposed in C.C. M15 grade.

10. Bridges:
Inspection path of width 5.10 m and foot path of width 1.80 m are provided on R/S
and L/S banks of canal.

11. Protection Works:

For the drain, 300 mm thick bed pitching and side revetment is proposed on U/S side.

The design is prepared based on the relevant provisions of IS Codes keeping

in view the stability and feasibility.
