Room: Zentner

GLEs: Students will:

 Develop Number Sense
SLEs: Students will:
Gr. 4:
1. Represent and describe whole numbers to 10 000, pictorially and symbolically.

Gr. 5:
1. Represent and describe whole numbers to 1 000 000.
Learning Students will:
Objectives  Review (B) ways to represent whole numbers (P) through a class discussion (M).
 Demonstrate (B) using words to represent numbers (P) through class discussion
(M).
 Practice (B) using words to represent numbers (P) through worksheets (M).
 Demonstrate (B) expansion form (P) through a class discussion (M).
 Practice (B) using expansion form (P) through worksheets (M).

Stage 2: Assessment Evidence

Formative  Are students demonstrating Summative N/A
Assessment their understanding of place Assessment
value in the class
discussion?
 Are students able to answer
the questions about place
value on the worksheets?
 Are students contributing to
the conversation about
expansion and word form?

Stage 3: Learning Experience

Prior to N/A Resources  Math Game pieces
Lesson: to Bring:  Interactive Notebook teacher
copy
 Interactive Notebook
template pieces
 Worksheets
Time: Content/Description Notes/Assessments:
Introduction: Review
2 min  Review what standard form is: ask students if they
remember what standard form is. If they don’t remember,
ask them where they can check. (in their notebooks under
the template).
 Review place value chart: using the number chart, ask
students how they put the number 43, 671 into the place
value chart.
Body: Place Value
 Tell students that place value is different than just place-

we know that the 1 for example, is in the ones place. We

52 know the 7 is in the 10s place, but how much is the 7
mins actually worth, is it just 7? No, its 7 10s which is actually
70. Go through this with the 6, the 3, and the 4 as well.
 Explain to students that an easy way to find the place value,
is to add a zero after the number you are looking at. For
example, if you want to know the value of the 3, add a zero
in the 67 and 1 spot. That will give you 3 000.
 Explain to students that this is expanded form- when we are
writing the actual value of each number. When we write it
out, we put a plus in between each value. Write it on the
white board for the students to see.
 Try it again with another number to practice.
 Get students to write the expanded form of 43 671 on their
charts.
 Next, talk about word form with the students. Word form
means we are writing out the way we would say the
number. Ask a student to say the number in word form
 Show students how to write the number, and get them to
write it in word form on their charts.
 Pass out the worksheets to the students. The first worksheet
asks the students to write the place value of the numbers.
The second asks the students to write out the numbers in
word form and expanded form.
 If students are finished their worksheets, they can work on
their title page or some other drawing.
 When students are finished and if there is time, play I have
Who Has? – students will be given a number and have to
go around the room asking their peers if they have the other
number written on their card. This gives them some
practice saying the numbers out loud in word form. Once
they find the person with the same number on their card,
they have to put their number in standard form on the back
as well as their name, the other person’s name, and hand it
in in the math bucket.
 Students can play math game with their partner if they finish
early.
Closure:
3 mins  Explain to students that this notebook STAYS in their desks
and does not go home. Any extra pieces that were not glued
down go in the envelope in the back.
