You will master how to describe changes in solid materials when they
are bent, pressed, hammered, or cut.
Specifically, this module will help you to:
1. describe what happens to solid materials when cut
2. differentiate changes in materials when hammered or cut
3. demonstrate how materials may undergo change by bending,
pressing, hammering and cutting
4. group materials based on its ability to be bent, pressed, hammered
and cut
5. make an artwork using bent, pressed, and cut materials.

Pre-Test

Looking Back
In your last module (Module 2), you have learned to describe
what happen to solids when bent, pressed and hammered Let’s have a
simple activity to refresh your mind.
Given this tin can, describe what happened when it is bent, pressed
or hammered. Illustrate or draw on your notebook or a separate sheet of
paper

What happened when bent?

What happened when pressed?

What happened when hammered?

Brief Introduction

Solid materials can be cut. When solid materials are cut, their size
and shape may change, but no new material is formed. Hence, the only
physical appearance of the solid is changed when cut.
Solid materials can be cut with different tools depending on their type.
Some solid materials, like iron, steel, etc., can be cut using metal cutters or
machine cutters.

Solid materials can be hammered. When hammered, these materials

may change their size, shape or texture but no new substance is formed.
Solid materials like metals can be hammered into thin sheets without
breaking or cracking.

Some solid materials like hollow blocks can be hammered and break
down into smaller pieces.

Activities

Activity 1. Cut and Paste

Materials: Paper pattern (please see attached pattern on page 11)
scissors, glue

Procedure:
Note: Please ask your parents or guardian to assist you in doing this activity.

3
Using scissors, cut the paper pattern and paste the parts of
each pattern inside the box. Use your notebook or another
sheet of paper for your answers.

Guide Questions:
1. What is the shape of the paper before cutting it?

2. What changes happened to the paper after cutting?

________________________________________________________

3. What is the image formed when you pasted all the parts of the pattern?
________________________________________________________

4. Is there a new material formed when you made a change to your

material?

Please see attached rubrics for this activity on page 11

Activity 2. Pound It
Materials: eggshell, empty tin can, hammer

Procedure:
Note: Please ask your parents or guardian to assist you in
doing this activity. Use another sheet of paper for your answers.

1. Using a hammer, pound the eggshell. Observe what

happens to the eggshell.

4
2. Get a piece of empty tin can. Pound it with a hammer.
Observe what happens.

Remember

● Solid materials can be changed in many ways.

● Solid materials can be cut. No new material is formed when you cut
the material but only the physical appearance like shape and size.
● Solid materials can be hammered. When hammered, these materials
may change their size and shape, but no new material is formed.
● Some materials like metals turn into thin sheets when hammered
while others like rocks, break into pieces when hammered.

6
Checking Your Understanding
