ESSENTIAL UNIT 1: It is essential for humans to communicate because doing so allows us to exchange ideas with others and
UNDERTANDING understand others’ viewpoints.
UNIT 2: Knowledge of both our own culture and how it differs from another ensures that we show respect to the other
person’s culture, thereby avoiding rudeness or misunderstanding.
UNIT 3: Control and social interaction are functions of communication. In control, communication is used to control or
regulate the pace and flow of conversation, while in social interaction, communication is used to attain social fulfillment.
UNIT 4: We need better communication with others in order to establish a harmonious relationship with the people we
deal with every day.
UNIT 5: Our speech style varies depending on who we are communicating with, what we are communicating, what we are
communicating for, and where the communication is taking place
UNIT 6: Speech acts affect the relationship of the communicators through the underlying intentions of their messages.
