Introduction to Program and Acquisition Management

Energy Security

The Department Of Defense needs access to the supply of energy which can be relied on,

thus making energy security a requirement by DOD. Energy efficiency is necessary to enhance

the range and endurance in the field (Harris, & Lewis, 2012). Therefore, the department needs to

consider the full burden of delivering energy in the acquisition process. The DOD should

promote its ability to acquire, store, and transport required volumes of power to the areas to be

used, while at the same time overcoming threats along the supply chain.

The capability has been declared IOC. This is because the department has already

invested in renewable energy, harvesting energy at the point of use reducing the supply of liquid

fuel (Brown, 2010). Secondly, DOD has examined bulk purchases of alternative fuels to use

during operations

Energy security has as well been declared as FOC for example, since DOD in the past

few years tested and approved the use of alternative fuels across air, sea, and the ground

platforms. Additionally, the department financed construction of a biofuel refining.

It is essential to understand some concepts in energy security such as; what risks are

associated with the use of energy? To what extent does the department understand the use of

power and the supply chain? How does the agency include and monitor use of energy in

training? How does the current equipment get upgraded to better use of energy? How are energy

supplies diversified to lower risk?
