HAND OPERATED FIRE EXTINGUISHER - FAILURE TO OPERATE

1. Planning Information
A. Effectivity
Aircraft affected: Various
Unit affected: Hand Operated Fire Extinguisher
Part Nos. 56412-001 (34H), 56411-001 (35H) and 56412-002 (38H)

B. Concurrent Requirements
(1) None.
C. Reason
(1) An instance has occurred where an operator has tried to use the fire extinguisher, but the
extinguisher has failed to operate when the lever has been pressed.
D. Description
(1) This Service Bulletin tells operators to remove the body and operating components, apply adhesive
to the gland nut and re-install the body and operating components.
E. Compliance
(1) It is recommended that the content of this Service Bulletin be done in accordance with the
requirements of the relevant aircraft OEM. Kidde Graviner recommends that only approved repair
organisations do the procedure in this Service Bulletin or alternatively the extinguisher is returned to
Kidde Graviner.
F. Approval
(1) Kidde Graviner have technically approved the content of this service bulletin.

G. Manpower
(1) It will take an estimated 25 hours to do this Service Bulletin.
NOTE: It is assumed that the equipment has been put in a maintenance status. The man-hour
estimates do not include time for preparation, close-out or administrative functions.

2. Material Information
A. Material
(1) These materials are necessary:
(a) Fluid, Dow Corning DC200/10cS
(b) Adhesive, Loctite 243
(c) Grease, Silicone DC4,
B. Tooling
(1) These special tools are necessary:
(a) Adaptor 671-776 - to remove cap assembly.
(b) Insertion/Removal Tool 34HR26 - to remove/install gland nut.
3. Accomplishment Instructions
A. General
(1) References in parentheses are to the Illustrated Parts List Figure/item No. in the Component
Maintenance Manual 26-24-01.
B. Procedure
WARNING: DAMAGE TO A PRESSURIZED CONTAINER CAN CAUSE DEATH OR SERIOUS INJURY.
HANDLE CONTAINERS WITH CARE. DO NOT DROP, OR CAUSE DAMAGE TO, A
CONTAINER.
(1) Removal
(a) Secure the container in a vice in a suitable protective clamp.
WARNING:DURING THE PROCEDURE THAT FOLLOWS, TAKE CARE NOT TO KNOCK,
DAMAGE OR PULL UP THE VALVE (1-130). ANY UNNECESSARY FORCE MAY
BREAK THE FRANGIBLE PLUG IN THE SYPHON TUBE SUBASSEMBLY AND
CAUSE THE EXTINGUISHANT TO FLOW THROUGH THE VALVE. RELEASE OF
EXTINGUISHANT CAN CAUSE SERIOUS INJURY OR DEATH.
(b) Remove the cap assembly (1-70) with the Cap Removal Tool 34R26. Discard the cap
assembly (1-70) if the indicator disc has been pierced.
(c) Remove the pivot pin (1-40) and remove the lever (1-60) and washers (1-50).
(d) Use a forked screwdriver to remove the lever bolt (1-90).
(e) If installed, remove the sealing cap (1-30). Remove the nozzle (1-10) and the nozzle washer
(1-20).
(f) Install the Adaptor 671-776 in the bore for the nozzle (1-10) and remove the body (1-80).
(g) Remove the spring (1-120).
(h) Remove the gland nut (1-110) with the Insertion/Removal Tool 34HR26. Remove and discard
the gland packing (1-100).
(i) Install a dummy body (1-80) temporarily onto the container (1-180) over the valve (1-130) to
prevent damage to the valve and subsequent release of extinguishant.

(2) Assembly
(a) Soak a new gland packing (1-100) in fluid, Dow Corning DC200/10cS for at least 30 minutes.
Remove any excess fluid.
(b) Use the Insertion/Removal Tool 34HR26 to install the gland packing (1-100) into the body
(1-80).
(c) Apply adhesive, Loctite 243, to cover the threads of the gland nut (1-110) and use the
Insertion/Removal Tool 34HR26 to install the gland nut (1-110) into the body (1-80) one to two
threads only.
(d) Install the lever bolt (1-90) carefully into the body and through the gland packing and gland.
(e) Use the Insertion/Removal Tool 34HR26 to fully install the gland nut (1-110) in the body. Turn
the gland nut (1-110) fully out and then fully in to make sure that the threads are completely
coated with adhesive. Tighten the gland nut (1-110) so that it is level with, or not more than
0.04 in (1,0 mm) above the shoulder of the body. Let the adhesive, Loctite 243, cure for 24
hours.
(f) Install the spring (1-120).
(g) Use a forked screwdriver to screw the lever bolt (1-90) into the valve two complete turns only.
WARNING:DURING THE PROCEDURE THAT FOLLOWS, TAKE CARE NOT TO KNOCK,
DAMAGE OR PULL UP THE VALVE (1-130). ANY UNNECESSARY FORCE MAY
BREAK THE FRANGIBLE PLUG IN THE SYPHON TUBE SUBASSEMBLY AND
CAUSE THE EXTINGUISHANT TO FLOW THROUGH THE VALVE. RELEASE OF
EXTINGUISHANT CAN CAUSE SERIOUS INJURY OR DEATH.
(h) Remove the dummy body (1-80) from the container (1-180).
(i) Install the body (1-80) onto the syphon tube assembly.
(j) Use the Adaptor 671-776 to tighten the body (1-80) to between 38 and 43 N m (28 and
32 lbf ft).
(k) Install the sealing washer (1-20) and nozzle assembly (1-10). Tighten the nozzle assembly
(1-10) to between 8,2 and 10,1 N m (6 and 7.5 lbf ft).
(l) Install the lever (1-60) and spacing washers (1-50). Assemble the pivot pin (1-40) to the body
(1-80) through the first washer (1-50), the lever (1-60) and second washer (1-50). Screw in
the pivot pin (1-40) one to two turns only. Apply adhesive, Loctite 243, to the threads in the
body (1-80) for the pivot pin (1-40). Turn the pivot pin (1-40) fully in, fully out and then fully in
to make sure that the threads are completely coated with adhesive. Tighten the pivot pin
(1-40) until it is level with the body (1-80).
(m) Use a forked screwdriver to a turn the lever bolt (1-90) to give a free movement at the end of
the lever (1-60) of approximately 0,76 mm (0.030 in).
(n) Apply adhesive, Loctite 243, to the threads of a new cap assembly (1-70) and install hand
tight.
(o) Apply grease, Silicone DC4, to the inside surfaces of the sealing cap (1-30) and install the
sealing cap over the nozzle (1-10).
(p) Use a suitable indelible black marker pen and write the service bulletin number on the
extinguisher head in the position shown: refer to Figure 1.
(3) Complete the maintenance documentation.
