UNIT 1
PRESENTATIONS IN ENGLISH
In this chapter we are going to discuss presentations in English. We are going to learn some easy and
practical ways to express our ideas without sounding artificial. A big problem for Brazilian people is that
when they try to imitate the way that American people speak, they usually sound artificial. In this chapter
you are going to learn how we can communicate using simple and effective expressions and structures.
Remember that most people use a constant group of words and expressions when they speak.
People do not usually use complicated and difficult words in everyday conversations; much on
the contrary, people tend to use easy and simple words so that the message can be
understood by listeners involved in the conversation, presentation, lecture or meeting.
The goal of this chapter is to teach you how to express ideas by using easy and practical
structures. You don’t need to use complicated expressions and structures to make yourself be
understood. Be short and clear.

 Organize facts in a logical sequence.
 Speak out loud in front of the mirror.
 If you have a webcam, you can film yourself, analyze the recording and then correct your mistakes.
 Keep notes at hand. Don’t run the risk to forget any important detail and ruin your presentation.
 The audience may ask difficult or embarrassing questions, so try to anticipate what questions may be
asked and prepare their answers so that you don’t get yourself into trouble.
 Gather more information about what you are supposed to speak so that in case there is some extra
time remaining at the end or in the middle of your presentation you can use this extra information to fill
this extra time.
 Warm-up: some minutes before your presentation, read sentences out loud so that you can get used
to yourself speaking English.
 Smile. A smiling person is always welcome and turns the presentation into a more agreeable
experience.
 Before starting, make sure all necessary documents and audio-visual resources are in place.

HOW TO BEGIN A PRESENTATION

Several books bring a long list of words and expressions that can be used to start a presentation. That is a
common method to teach new vocabulary and structures. On the other hand people must be careful
because they sometimes might get mixed up with so many choices. Here you will find a list that will meet
all your needs. Most people (including native speakers) use the same expressions when they make
presentations. Let’s make an easy and clear presentation. Long presentations make your audience get
tired and lose interest quickly as it was said before, some experts say that a 30-minute presentation is
quite enough. You do not need to memorize lots of ways to start a presentation. Let’s be practical.
