We are Whitman’s PREMIER business club!

An international organization that hosts business competitions among high school and
college students

Develop leadership, networking, and public speaking skills that will help you in
college, your career, and life.

What Can DECA Do for You?
● Develop leadership, entrepreneurial, and life skills
● Learn how to network, interview, and create a great resume
● Participate in community service activities
● Be a part of a community of over 70 friends
● Looks great on a resume and college applications

DECA Competitions
● Regionals, States and Nationals
● Lots of fun with friends!
● Attend workshops led by top business professionals
● Meet people from across Maryland and the world
● Five main categories: Marketing, Hospitality & Tourism, Finance,
Management, and Entrepreneurship
Types of Events
● Individual Events
● Team (Partner) Events
● Written Events (1-3 people)
● Virtual Business Challenges (1-3 people)
Individual/Team Event
● Tests your ability to think on your feet

● Given a simulated business case study

● Solve a problem, propose a business
plan, or determine the best course of
action
Written Events
● Perform research, write a paper, and create a
presentation before competition date
● Easier to place at states and qualify for nationals
● Great exposure to different aspects of the business
field
● More time to understand the background of the
problem you are trying to solve
● Teams of 1-3 participants
BUSINESS OPERATIONS RESEARCH EVENTS
● Demonstrate knowledge and skills needed by management personnel.
● Conduct actual research studies in their community

PROJECT MANAGEMENT EVENTS

● Use project management skills
● Initiate, plan, execute, and monitor a project
ENTREPRENEURSHIP EVENTS
● Explore entrepreneurial concepts
● Creating a plan instead of executing one

INTEGRATED MARKETING CAMPAIGN EVENTS

● Develop an integrated marketing campaign for a real event, product or
service
● Campaign less than 45 days
● Present campaign in role-play situation
PROFESSIONAL SELLING AND CONSULTING EVENTS
● Demonstrate skills needed for a career in sales and/or consulting
● Organize and deliver a sales presentation or consultation for one or more
products/services/customers
● 1 participant
Virtual Business Challenges
● Computer-based simulation competition
○ Online and consists of two simulation periods

● Learn how to invest in the stock market, manage

personal finances, or operate a business venture
● 1-3 participants
● 8 subsections: Accounting, Entrepreneurship,
Fashion, Hotel Management, Personal Finance,
Restaurant, Retail, and Sports

What Else Does Whitman DECA Offer?
● DECA isn’t just about Competition Prep!
● Introduce and expose you to the business world

seems like a lot.
Raffle
● Attending 1 DECA meeting = 5 entry
● 1 new member you “recruit” = 5 entry
○ Make sure they put your name in the “who referred you section” on their registration form

● Submitting in registration = 10 entries

● Raffle drawn at the end of each month (except September)
● Monthly prizes = 1 $15 Amazon gift card and 1 $15 Chipotle gift card (2 total)
● BIG prize at the end of the year
○ Your entries are additive and won’t disappear at the end of each month after a name is drawn

● Submit by OCTOBER 31st, 2020
● One rule: you can’t use the DECA symbol
● Winner gets 10 extra entries into the raffle
What will this year look like?
● First semester: virtual meetings on Zoom using a
combination of main meeting room and breakout
rooms
● Meetings every Wednesday from 2:40 PM - 3:40 PM
● Registration: please refer to the “forms” section of our
website
