Question # 1
A uniform ball, of mass M= 6.00 kg and radius R, rolls smoothly from rest down a ramp at angle
u =30.0°.
(a) The ball descends a vertical height h=1.20 m to reach the bottom of the ramp. What is its
speed at the bottom?
(b) (b) What are the magnitude and direction of the frictional force on the ball as it rolls down
the ramp?
a:Calculations:

Therefore the linear acceleration of the ball

a= -g sinθ/1+2/5
a= -(9.80)sin(30)/1+2/5
a= -3.5 m/s2
b:Calculatios
F= -2/5ma
F=-2/5 (6)(-3.55)
F=8.4 N
Question # 2
An overhead view of two particles moving at constant momentum along horizontal paths. Particle
1, with momentum magnitude 𝑃1 = 5.0 kgm/s, has position vector and will pass 2.0 m from point
O. Particle 2, with momentum magnitude 𝑃2 =2.0 kg m/s, has position vector and will pass 4.0 m
from point What are the magnitude and direction of the net angular momentum about point O of
the two particles system?

R1 around O as particle 1 moves.Thus,the angular

momentum vector for particle 1 is
l1= +10kgm2/s
Similarly,the magnitude of L2 is
l2=(4m)(2kg.m2/s)
l2=8kgm2/s
the vector product is into the page,which is the negative
direction.
l2= -8kgm2/s
L= l1+l2
L=10-8=2kgm2/s
Question # 3
A penguin of mass m falls from rest at point A, a horizontal distance D from the origin O of an xyz
coordinate system. (The positive direction of the z axis is directly outward from the plane of the
figure.) (a) What is the angular momentum of the falling penguin about O?

(a) Angular momentum:

l = rʇmv = Dmgt
Direction: Using the right-hand rule
l is directed into the plane of the figure.
(b) Torque = DFg = Dmg
Direction: Using the right-hand rule, Torque is directed
into the plane of the figure.
Remark: The results agree with Newton’s law for angular
motion:
Torque =dl/dt =d(dmgt)/dt = Dmg
Question # 4
A cockroach with mass m rides on a disk of mass 6.00m and radius R. The disk rotates like a
merry-go-round around its central axis at angular speed 𝜔𝑖 1.5𝑟𝑎𝑑/𝑠The cockroach is initially at
radius r=0.800R , but then it crawls out to the rim of the disk.
Treat the cockroach as a particle.
What then is the angular speed?
Calculations
We want to find the final angular speed.Our key is to equate the final angular momentum Lf.
Ld=3.00mR2
Ici=0.64mR2
Icf=mR2
I i= Id +Ici=3.64mR2
Lf= Id +Icf = 4.00mR2
Lfwf=liwi
Wf=1.37rad/s.
Question # 5
A solid sphere of mass 0.1kg and radius 2.5cm rolls without slipping with a uniform velocity of
0.1m/s along a straight line on a horizontal table. Calculate its total energy.

When a body rolls over a smooth surface, it has linear K.E. and rotational K.E.

∴E=1/2mv2+1/2Iω2

where ω=v/r

and I=2/5mr2 for solid sphere.

∴K.E.=1/2mv2+1/2(2/5mr2)⋅v2/r2

=1/2mv2+1/5mv2=107mv2=7/10×1×1

=7/10J
