Introduction
Port said shipyard 6-12-2016

Port Said Shipyard (PSS) is a leading shipyard in the

area; it has a unique strategic place and is considered as a
distinguished spot at the northern entrance of Suez Canal
giving it a great privilege to attract many transiting ships
for repair purposes. PSS has acquired great experience in
the fields of repair & new building of different floating
vessels such as different ship types, dredgers, tugboats
….etc. 
PSS has highly qualified personnel who are skilled
enough and experienced in Shipbuilding and ship
repairs. 
PSS applies a robust Quality Management System, and is
ISO 9000:2000 certified since 19/7/2000
 In the field of ship repairs, PSS has a widely known
experience for more than 100 years.
 In the field of shipbuilding, PSS is the first yard in
the area that started this activity on 1959 by
building the cargo ship (Kanat Al Suez) of 3200
DWT for the Egyptian Navigation Company.
Shipyard Main Activities:
1. Repairs of S.C.A. Fleet: Maintenance and repair
of annually more than 60 big and medium sized
vessels belonging to SCA such as dredgers,
floating cranes, tugboats … etc.
2. Foreign Ship Repair: Docking ships up to 50000
DWT for repair purposes, and executing floating
repairs along repair quays, at anchorage areas
and on ways through Canal as well.
3. Ship Building: Building different types of vessels
up to 20000 DWT (including special purpose
vessels, dredgers, tugs,.etc.)
4. General Engineering Works: Providing general
engineering works for all SCA departments and

manufacturing a wide range of spare parts for

SCA equipments and for national industries.
5. Salvage works: Executing salvage by well-
equipped and highly qualified divers in addition
to inspection and under water welding
operations.

On Tuesday 6/12/2016. We went to the arsenal Port

Said Marine where we were interviewed by the engineer
Mr. Ahmed el-barbary, who gave us overview about the
history of establishment port said shipyard and its

importance of it in the navigation and the practice that is

done in it about in ship building and ship repairing and
discuss in brief the components of arsenal and the role of
it in ship repairing and building and the hazards that
affect the workers in each department.

Navy arsenal in Port said consists of:

**Around 3,000 workers and employees work in

Port said shipyard.

Ø Walk through survey showed:

1. Environment:

- Lightening: natural and artificial but it is bad in the

administrative building.

- Ventilation: natural and artificial ventilation present.

- Noise level not acceptable from 85 to 90 db.

- Housekeeping: bad in workshops.

- Area isn’t free from odours.

2. Safety signs and symbols:

- There is written procedures for emergency situations.

- safety clothes and ear muffs.

3. Emergency procedures:

- There are many alarming signs in all factory areas.

- There are fire extinguishers.

4. Personal protective equipments:

- Available for all workers.

- Consists of: Safety shoes, Safety helmets, Safety glove, sleeves

and ear muffs.

5. General facilities:

- Washing and bathroom facilities.

- The restaurant for eating and drinking ( but impeded in the

Hazards).

Hazards in the work area

1) Physical hazard:

1-High temperature in the parts that deal with melting

metal

2-Noise: high level of noise in the Carpentry workshop,

Machine workshop and Metal workshop.

3-Vibration: in the Metal workshop.

4-Atmospheric pressure changes: occur with the divers.

5-Electrecity: in the Electricity workshop

2) Chemical hazard:

Chemicals and silica: in Pipes workshop and Skins and

melanin workshop.

Asbestos in painting of the ships.

Gases such as Lead the most important one, Antimon,

copper, Aluminum.

3) Mechanical hazard:

Falling from high levels

Accidents due to unsafe/incorrect operations of machins:

l inadequate guarding of machines

l inadequate training about safe work practice

Explosions: in the Oxygen factory and Acetylene factory

4) Psychosocial hazard: Work stress.

Recommendations to control occupational hazards:

1. Avoid hazardous , physically demanding and

repetitive manual handling operations.
2. Assess the risk of injury from manual handling that
cannot be avoided and reduce the risk of injury.

3. Mechanise handling or eliminate the need for manual

handling.
4. Improve design, layout and house keeping of the
working environment.

5. Air sampling can be performed to compare exposure

levels with legal limits.

6. Ensure employees are adequately trained and

instructed about the health risks and how to minimize
them by taking the necessary precautions.

7.Ensure all reasonably practicable measures are taken to

reduce noise levels.

8. Hearing protection is required Limit direct contact

with Silica as possible.
9. Follow all instructions signs.
