What is RN NUMBER On Clothing Label ?
RN means Registered Identification Number is issued by the U. S. Federal Trade Commission to
a business residing in the U. S. that is engaged in the manufacture, importing, distributing, or
sale of textile, wool, or fur products. However, the RN can be used in place of a name on the
label or tag, that is required to be affixed to these products. RN numbers can be incorporated
into all types of clothing labels like woven labels, care/content printed labels, hangtags and
Tagless heat transfers. The RN number is helpful for consumers when trying to contact a
manufacturer with a question, comment, or complaint.

How To convert fabric price per Meter to per Kg?

Fabric is the basic material of garments . So for consumption and costing fabric price is very
important .

To convert fabric price from meter to KG by using the following formula

Weight (in gram) = Fabric length (in meter) X fabric width (in meter) X Fabric GSM

For example:

Fabric length is 1 meter

Fabric width = 70 inch convert it into meters = (70 * 2.54) /100 =1.778 meters

Fabric GSM = 230 grams

So ,from the above formula the result is

Weight (in gram) = 1X 1.778 X 230 = 408.94 grams

Convert weight into Kg dividing it by 1000.

Therefore fabric weight will be 0.40894 Kgs

So, 1 meter of fabric is equivalent to 0.40894 Kg

For example, fabric price is $1.75 we can say at $1.50 we will get 0.40894 kg ,therefore fabric
price will be $1.75/0.33528 = $4.27 . So per kg fabric price will be = $4.27.

What is Lab Dip, Strike off and Bit Loom ?

A lab dip is a swatch of fabric test dyed to hit a color standard. It is a process by which buyer’s
supplied swatch is matched with the varying dyes percentage in the laboratory with or without
help of spectrophotometer. Lab dip plays an important role in shade matching & this is an
important task before bulk production. This is 10×10 cm swatch dyed in laboratory of mill for
checking color standards given on pantone. This swatch is dyed to get color approval from
buyer. Merchandiser has to prepare 4-5 lab dip option for each color because he has to keep
one as counter. It’s the merchandiser’s responsibility to get the Lab dips from the processing
mill and to get approval from the buyer.
Strike off is the popular term in the garments industry. It is the development stage sourcing in
the sample development. Normally, this term use for print fabric development or sourcing
stage. Strike off is the small print color swatch approval from buyer. As per strike off a
merchandiser develop base color of fabric. Strike off like as lab dip. Strike off is the piece of
cloth to represent the bulk is called strike off. According to submission depend buyer to buyer.

Bit loom is a common term mostly used in garment supply chain. It is one kind of fabric
development sample. Normally yarn dyed fabric swatches (samples) are called as Bit loom. As
solid colored or solid dyed fabric swatches samples are called as Lab dips. To develop fabric
design that is made with dyed yarns checks or stripes or self colored yarn with different counts
of yarn. The aim of using bit loom is to show the fabric design to the buyer for final look of the
fabric. In order to get fabric It is made only for fabric sample approval from buyers.
What do ETD and ETA mean in Merchandising ?
ETD means Estimated Time of Delivery (shipment delivery schedule). That means shipment
departure from Loading port.

ETA means Estimated Time of Arrival (Shipment arrival schedule). That means shipment arrival
from loading port .

Actually ETD and ETA are shipping terms and it is mostly used in apparel industry because
apparel business is a global business and international buyer and retailer source garments from
various regions around the world .When merchandiser contact with the buyer for shipment
ETD and ETA are used .

What is Ex-Factory Date ?

Ex-factory is the date that the bulk will leave the factory. According to the ex-factory date, the
garment manufacturer plans its production schedule, pre-production and material sourcing
schedule. The ex-factory date may or may not be the same date as the shipment date. But to
the factory, ex-factory date is the shipment date. Buying house keeps some days in their hand
as a buffer. In case shipment gets delayed by the factory they can compensate the delay and
extend the ex-factory date.

What is Thread Average? Who gives thread average to Merchandiser ?

Thread average means average meters or yards of sewing threads required for making one
garment .This is including sewing thread wastage as thread tails at both ends of the seam and
leftover threads on cones/tubes. Each apparel product has a different thread average. For
example, a t-shirt may need 38 yards of thread and a jean need 223 yards of sewing thread .

Actually Industrial engineers are responsible for estimating thread consumption for production
garments. But if the factory does not have the IE department then production manager do this
task and give to merchandiser .In that case thread average is estimated based on work
experience - actual calculation is not done based on style.
