Problem 2.

1:
What is the received power (in dBm ) in free space of the signal whose transmit power
1W and the carrier frequency is 2.4GHz if the receiver is at a distance of 1 mile (1.6 km)
from the transmitter ? what is the path loss in dB?

Solution :
Transmit Power Pt = 1W
Convert to dBm:
10logPt = 10log(1W / 1 mW) = 30 dBm.
Carrier frequency, f = 2.4 GHz
Distance : d = 1.6 km
Gt = Gr = 1

2
Pr = Pt * Gt * Gr * (λ / 4* ∏ * d)
Received power at distance one meter
2
Po = Pt * ( λ / 4* ∏ )
10logPo = 10logPt + 20log( λ / 4* ∏ )
= 30 + 20 * (-2.004)
= 30 – 40.08
= -10.08 dBm
2
Pr = Po / d
10logPr = 10logPo - 20log( d )
= -10.08 - 20 log(1600)
= -10.08 – 64.08
= -74.16 dBm ……………….Ans of received power

Path Loss :
L = Pt -Pr
=10logPt - 10logPr
= 30 – (-74.16)
= 104.16 dBm……………….Ans of Path Loss
