Problem: - 14.2

In problem 14.1, what happens if the first base station incorrectly measures the AOA from the
mobile terminal as 50 degrees? 30 degrees?

Answer:-

As we know that, the receiver measures the direction of received signals from the target
transmitter using directional antennas or antenna arrays. If the accuracy of the direction
measurement (roughly the beam of the antenna array) is +/- Os, the AOA (angle of arrival)
measurement at the receiver will restrict the transmitter position around the LOS (line of sight)
single path with an angular spread of 2Os.

The meaning of above statement is that if the antenna is receiving a signal form the terminal
then it can move antenna such that receiver does not block the receiving signal.

1. Now here the actual measurement of receiver is 45 degrees of angle with x-axis but
rather than that the receiver measures 50 degrees of angle with x-axis. So, the error
here in measurement is 5 degrees. The receiver receives signal with the information that
the signal makes an angle of 45 degrees with x-axis and moves freely according to its
receiving range, say 2 O. While receiving of a signal, the receiver can move by half the
angle of its receiving range on the around the signal without blocking the receiving
signal. But here we have an error of 5 degrees, so in this if the receiver has to move
around signal without blocking it then the receiver can move with max. angle of (O – 5).
As the receiver doesn’t know the actual AOA of signal, it will move by max. angel of O.
so if the receiver moves with more than (O – 5) angle than it will lose the connection
with the mobile terminal.

2. Now here the actual measurement of receiver is 45 degrees of angle with x-axis but
rather than that the receiver measures 30 degrees of angle with x-axis. So, the error
here in measurement is 15 degrees. The receiver receives signal with the information
that the signal makes an angle of 45 degrees with x-axis and moves freely according to
its receiving range, say 2 O. While receiving of a signal, the receiver can move by half the
angle of its receiving range on the around the signal without blocking the receiving
signal. But here we have an error of 15 degrees, so in this if the receiver has to move
around signal without blocking it then the receiver can move with max. angle of
(O – 15). As the receiver doesn’t know the actual AOA of signal, it will move by max.
angel of O. so if the receiver moves with more than (O – 15) angle than it will lose the
connection with the mobile terminal.
