THE PROBLEM AND ITS BACKGROUND

This chapter presents the introduction and background of the study. It also

covers discussion on the study’s conceptual paradigm, the statement of the

problems, its scope and limitation, significance of the study, and the definition of

terms for better understanding of the concepts related to the study.

Introduction

Fan needs to be manually controlled every time but by using this idea the

automatic temperature detection fan. The fan will automatically on defends on

the temperature in the surrounding. The project is based on the concepts of

Internet of Things (IOT). Here, the temperature is to be controlled and the focus

is on the reason of installing automatic detection fan is the comfort of the

consumer. Temperature is controlled using DHT22 Sensors; the DHT22 is a low

cost digital temperature sensor. It uses an electrical phenomenon and semi-

conductor devices to live the encompassing air and spits out a digital signal on

the information pin. It is easy to use. But requires more time to grab information

and then the DHT22 sensors send the data to micro-controller circuit which

consist of arduino board. Arduino refers to an open source electronics boards

and it is programmed using software. It makes electronic design more accessible

for anyone interested in creating it with suitable environment. The study is aimed

at controlling the temperature detection fan automatically using arduino

temperature and humidity sensors. Electric fan is one of the most popular

electrical devices due to its cost effectiveness and low power consumption

1
advantages. It is common circuit and widely used in many applications. It also

one of the most sensible solutions to offer a comfortable and energy efficient. In

fact, the fan has been long used and still available in the market. Nowadays the

demand for accurate temperature control and air freshening control has

conquered many of industrial domains such as process heat, automotive,

industrial places or office buildings where the air is cooled in order to maintain a

comfortable environment for its occupants. One of the most important concerns

involved in heat area consist in the desired temperature achievement and

consumption optimization. So an automatic temperature control system

technology is needed for the controlling purpose in the fan temperature detection

according to the temperature changes.

Background of the Study

Warm temperature is one of the common problems that are being faced

by households and commercial establishment. Many houses and apartments

cannot provide air condition for their rooms and houses. In this study we will

design a temperature detection fan that can detect warm and cold temperature

and display it on LCD(Liquid-crystal Display) display in the range of +1 degrees

Celsius to +50 degrees Celsius. The heart of the circuit is an Arduino board

which controls all its function, a NTC (Negative Temperature Coefficient)

Thermistor is used as temperature sensor. It is also part of smart home

application where the fan will gradually increase. In general home appliance fans

need to operate manually with the help of regulators with the variation of

temperature.

and Communication and Information Technology at, President Ramon

Magsaysay State University (PRMSU) in Iba, Zambales.

Statement of the problem

This study aims to develop a device that generates temperature that

detect warm and cold conditions of weather.

Specially, it seeks to answer the following questions:

1. What are the respondent’s evaluations on the level of the satisfaction of the

Automated Energy Saving Fan: as to:

4
1.1 Functional Suitability;

1.2 Performance Efficiency;

1.3 Compatibility;

1.4 Usability;

1.7 Maintainability; and

1.8 Portability?

2. What are the respondent’s evaluations of the level of the acceptability of the

Automated Energy Saving Fan: as to:

2.1 Functionality;

2.2 Performance; and

2.3 Usability?

Significance of the Study

Over the last decade, advances in electronics have made devices smaller,

cheaper and faster. This research study is about how the speed of a fan can be

controlled, based on temperature sensor. It is also a part of smart home

application where the fan will gradually increase its speed if the temperature is

increasing and if the temperature decreases the fan speed decreases. In

general, home appliance fans need to be operated manually with the help of

regulators with the variation of temperature, thus requires a repeatedly extra

effort for regulating the fan speed which acts to our agony. So as to reduce extra

5
effort and to add comfort, it is intended in this paper designing an Automated

Energy Saving Fan.

Scope and Limitations

For the scope of the study, the main intension is to control the fan by

heating the sensor, where the speed of the fan is dependent and controlled by

any device’s temperature like PC. As the temperature of the device increases or

decreases, the speed of the fan increases or decreases respectively. So, it can

be used mainly as cooling devices. By modifying the circuit slightly, it can also be

used to control the room temperature. Thus, it is possible to control the speed of

the fan automatically when the device’s temperature varies. Experiment can be

followed to evaluate whether the circuit can be save energy through the use of

temperature sensor and thus promote efficiency. The micro-controller is the heart

of the circuit, if micro-controller is damage the whole system will be interrupted.

Speed control is independent in individual preference.

REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE AND STUDIES

The literature and studies cited in this chapter tackle the different concept,

understanding, and ideas, generalization or conclusion and different

development related to study of the Automatic Temperature Detection Fan. This

serves as the researchers guide in developing the project. Those that were also

included in this chapter helps in familiarizing information that are relevant and

similar to the present study.

Foreign Literature

According to Jambotkar (2000) availability of electricity is found to reach

crucial stage. To protect and safeguard one’s future we need to save the energy.

As a slogan suggest “One unit saved is one unit generated”. The project is a

standalone automatic fan speed controller that controls the speed of an electric

fan according to our requirement. Use of embedded technology makes this

closed loop feedback control system efficient and reliable. Arduino

microcontroller allows dynamic and faster control. Liquid crystal display (LCD)

makes the system user friendly. The sensed temperature and fan speed level

values are simultaneously displayed on the LCD panel.

Dehaid (2008) constructed a smart fan in which is controlled by PIR

sensor with human tracking. The project consists of two dual element PIR

sensors directed in the same direction as the fan. The PIR sensors measure

infra-red light that is radiated in their field of view. They each contain two internal

compensating Pyro electric windows, one positive and the other negative, to

8
minimize disruption from sources. Such as temperature variation. The speed of

execution was satisfactory for the most part. Upon detection of a human the

sensing circuit responds immediately, causing the circuit output to go high. This

low to high transition is captured by the microcontroller and system operation

begins. Unfortunately, once the sensor does detect a human, its output may

remain level for as much as 2.5 seconds. The system cannot respond until the

sensor output settles since a rising edge is required to trigger a new response

from the system.

According to Farhadi (2010) the pulse width is proportional to the

amplitude of the signal. By varying the duty cycle of the pulse, the speed of the

fan can be controlled. Duty cycle may be defined as the amount of time in a

particular period during which the pulse is active or high. The speed is made

slow, medium, fast, very fast and zero by having different duty cycles.

Jamal (2015) member of International Journal of Advanced Research in

Computer Engineering & Technology (IJARCET) has been published a paper in

2015 about Smart Surveillance System Using PIR Sensor Network and GSM.

This security system is based on the embedded system along with GSM and

sensor networks. The human movement is detected using the PIR sensors. In

this time, the system triggers an alarm detecting the presence of person in a

specific interval of time and simultaneously sends the how many persons are

intruder via message to the SMS through GSM Modem. When the security

system is activated, the CCTV camera is activated. This highly reactive

9
approach has low computational requirement. Therefore it is well suited for

home surveillance system.

Suranh (2015) member of U.S. Energy Information Administration

provides data for India from 2010 to 2015. The average value for electricity

consumption of India during that period was 15.1 billion kilowatt-hours with a

minimum of 1.8 billion kilowatt-hours in 2010 and a maximum of 46.17 billion

kilowatt-hours in 2014.

Foreign studies

McKelly (2014) mentioned that some country especially in rooms

switching on or off electrical fans is still commonly made by manual switches

Hence, people are becoming so busy that they forgot to turn off switches after

leaving the room. The world temperature is increasing rapidly so a new

technology is required to adapt to this varying temperature The need for

automatic system is the concern of today’s technology.

Sinani (2011) discussed technology is running with time, it completely

occupied the life style of human beings. Even though there is such an importance

for technology in our routine life there are even people whose life styles are very

far to this well-known term technology. So it is our responsibility to design few

reliable systems which can be even efficiently used by them. Automatic Room

Temperature Controlled Fan Speed Controller is one of them.

Frasheri (2007) discussed as time goes by, the improvement in

technology growth larger, advance and more sophisticated. Long time ago, we

never heard about temperature monitoring system or house monitoring system

10
where the it can be detected by using wireless technologies application, GSM or

using radio frequency technologies is great and back to previous era, people

unable to imagine how the process work.

Frasheri (2016) discussed the same with this project that used the

application of radio frequencies by using RF transmitter and RF receiver to

monitor the temperature in the roof. The whole process that was described here

is focus only on hardware part. It was known that when the temperature outside

the house is rising, the area the sealed like in the roof will cumulate heat. So, in

order to ensure that the temperature in that area do not rise so high that will

make house resident feel not comfortable, sensor will detect the temperature and

fan will do the job in stabilized the temperature.

Hysi (2014) mentioned that the temperature that so high especially in

some country always cause discomfort for house resident. The fan that available

today for the roof is always on in order to keep roof compartment cool whether it

hot or cool. It can cause electric waste and can burden the user. This project not

only tell the value of temperature in the roof but also introduce smart fan that will

active only at certain temperature and will turn off if the temperature drop below

set temperature level.

Local literature

According to Devesfruto (2014) fan speed control considering non-ideal

temperature measurements in enterprise servers. The system was implemented

by using Proportional-Integral-Derivative (PID) controller to the operating fan

speed and eliminating fan speed oscillation caused by temperature quantization ,

11
and then this project I, use the Arduino UNO to save the cost and easy to

develop. The different from previous research that are design to control speed of

fan at CPU temperature and this project is to design the control speed of fan in

room temperature.

Sanchez (2013) mentioned that the project room temperature based fan

speed control system using pulse width modulation technique. This previous

project is use the temperature LM35 to detect the temperature at room. The

process to design also used the Proteus 8.0. The different with this project is the

microcontroller used the in the project, they are used the MATLAB R2013a v1.8

to authorize the accuracy of the structure and at this project used the Arduino

UNO.

Santos (2005) a principal researcher at the Davao College University,

noticed in the 2000s that the ceiling fans then had a common feature: flat blades.

Such blades clearly had the advantage of simplicity, but Santos, who had

investigated ceiling fans questioned whether the efficiency of ceiling fans could

be improved if the blades were more aerodynamic.

Dial (2011) covers application of a thermostatic control valve to maintain

a constant temperature of coolant flow in the cooling jacket of an internal

combustion engine. It comprises of warm up valve to suppress coolant flow in

partial area of cooling jacket, a radiator valve to supply coolant from cooling

jacket to radiator, a bypass valve to return coolant from cooling jacket’s outlet to

its inlet thus bypassing radiator. A single thermostatic element therein responds

to temperature changes and actuates warm up valve, radiator valve and bypass

12
valve. A solar heating system hardly requires warm up valve or bypass valve

since the system aims to deliver solar heated fluid at constant temperature or at

minimum high temperature

Mariano (2012) described a thermostatic control valve for application to

radiators used for room heating. It comprises of ambient temperature sensor in a

housing to operate a plunger to actuate control valve. The housing is isolated

thermally from the valve mechanism. Its claimed advance controlling heating fluid

flow through the radiator is that it responds to the room’s ambient temperature

rather than being affected by the heat emanating from the heat radiator. The

limitations perceived in this arrangement are the low operating range of

temperatures that are appropriate for space heating and restrictions limited to

plunger-cylinder mechanism

Local studies

Mariano (2007) described that automation systems at home today has

been developed. Automation can be generally described as a process following

pre-determined sequential steps with a little or without any human exertion.

Automation is provided with the use of various sensors suitable to observe the

production processes, actuators and different techniques and devices. Smart

home automations gives the owner of a home an ultimate control over his or her

home by automated lighting system, dimming, and electrical appliances. This

advanced technology is used to do automation of a house activities, so it is also

can be called as home automation.

13
Abad (2009) discussed that the weather changes rapidly in the world, the

temperature changes frequently. Temperature monitoring and control is

important in industrial environments and also in the human living room. Industrial

temperature monitoring is important in many applications and systems as

excessive changes in the temperature can lead to detrimental effects and failure

of operation. Many important devices and chip components, such as integrated

circuit, demand for stable temperature and voltage without instantaneous

breakdown and wide range fluctuation. Early detection of overheating and proper

handling of such situation is essential to avoid deterioration and faulty

components. Thermal management in the semiconductor electronic industry is

facing increasing challenges due to increasing power and cost effective

solutions. Due to the excessive changes of temperature human life being

harmful. In the electronics world we want to make the human life comfortable.

Therefore the home automation system is very essential. Fan speed controller is

one of the parts of the home automation system.

Abatat (2010) mentioned that typical ceiling fan has only a few primary

components: a motor, fan blades and, sometimes, a light. The focus of the

development was to modify the fan blades to make the fan more aerodynamic

and consequently more efficient. But it was recognized that modifications to the

fan blades may impact the design of other components, and that efficiency gains

may be attained by paying careful attention to them.

Aguilar (2010) mentioned that normal fans in household as well as offices

have a manual speed control system. It is regulated using a rotary switch which

14
internally involves a potentiometer. The potentiometer adjusts current flow to the

fan and hence, the speed is adjusted. This project involves the use of

temperature sensor. The temperature sensor will read through changes in room

temperature.

Dela Cruz (2011) mentioned that time goes by, the improvement in

technology growth larger, advance and more sophisticated. Long time ago, we

never heard about temperature monitoring system or house monitoring system

where the it can be detected by using wireless technologies application, GSM or

using radio frequency technologies is great and back to previous era, people

unable to imagine how the process work.
