SPMT’s stands for Self Propelled Modular Trailers. SPMT’s are modular trailers that can be mounted to each other so
that it is possible to make any configuration necessary for transporting a load of any size and weight. SPMT’s are not
pulled by a tractor like conventional trailers, but they are equipped with a Power Pack Unit which provides the
propulsion. The SPMT’s come in modules of 4 axle lines or 6 axle lines. Each axle line has 2 axles and each axle has 2
tires.
Mammoet has a large fleet of Self Propelled Modular Trailers with over more than 1800 axle lines. The SPMT’s are
easy to mobilize and to assemble. Mammoet operates two brands of SPMT: Kamag and Scheuerle. Both brands can
be operated together in any kind of configuration.
Each SPMT configuration can be driven by one single operator. Therefore he has the availability of a portable remote
control with clear instrumentation. The steering is done by programmable electronically controlled multidirectional
steering. Complete structures can be positioned to the millimetre.
The SPMT’s are equipped with an hydraulic jack suspension system. This system keeps the trailer deck horizontal
while driving on slopes and unevenness’s in the road.
1.1.1 Steering capabilities
One of the major advantages of SPMT’s is the great manoeuvrability of the trailers. The trailer combination can drive
forward, backward, sideways, diagonal and can even rotate on the spot (carrousel).
1.1.3 Operations
Prior to the operations, the trailers will be mobilized to the site, mostly by truck. They also fit easily on a flat rack, which
is easy to transport them with containerships. For the unloading and the assembly of the SPMT’s only a 70 tons
hydraulic crane is necessary. The modules will be unloaded from the truck and assembled together in the right
configuration. The trailers will be equipped with sufficient packing.
SPMT’s can easily be transported
The trailers will be positioned under the modules in such a way that the packing meets the “strong” points of the
structure. When the item is loaded on the trailer, the item will be secured by means of lashing.
Transport route
To calculate ground bearing pressures (indicated in tons per square metre), the load is considered to be supported
uniformly by a ground area equivalent to the projected area of the trailer deck (this uniform condition strictly applies at
the sub-base level approximately 700mm below the tyres contract points). Maximum carrying capacity over projected
area always yields a pressure calculated in this manner of less than 10 ton per square metre.
The swept area on the route of the trailer path to the modules final destination should be made good and well
compacted to be able to support the imposed pressures and local tyre loadings imposed by our trailers to avoid rutting.
