System 500 Firmware Update 
Leica Geosystems GPS System 500 measurement engines have experienced an issue maintaining a 
correct system date thus not allowing the system to track satellites correctly.  This issue was identified 
Aug. 16 th  2009 and has now been isolated and resolved with a firmware revision.  Please read on and 
follow directions to access the fix. 

GPS System 500 Firmware 5.10: 

Due to an unforeseen issue with GPS week roll­over being handled incorrectly, most GPS System 500 
receivers will no longer output satellite data without a firmware upgrade. 

A new firmware V5.10 is now available that will resolve this tracking issue.  It should immediately be 
loaded to all SR510, SR520 and SR530 receivers still in use. 

********NOTE: GNSS System 1200 receivers are not effected by this issue******* 

Critical: Please follow these directions exactly!!  Failure to do so may render the 
receiver inoperable. 

Firmware Upgrade Requirements: 

Preferred Method (ATA Flash Card):

· Leica Geosystems ATA Flash Card greater than 4 mb (4mb will not work!).
· System 500 Firmware version 4.xx or newer on receiver.
· System 500 Firmware version 5.10 to be installed on receiver.
· Fully charged batteries (internal pair or external GEB171).
· TR500 terminal. 

Alternate Method (Slow approx 1 ½ hr):

· GEV100 (560254) cable, 9­pin to System 500 terminal.
· System 500 Firmware version 4.xx or newer on receiver.
· System 500 Firmware version 5.10 to be installed on receiver.
· Fully charged batteries (internal pair or external GEB171).
· TR500 terminal.

Installation Procedure to follow: 
1. Download Sensor Firmware from Leica Geosystems Support Website 

System 500 FW 5.10 onboard software and language files (version 5.00) can be downloaded from the 
Leica Geosystems download site here. 

2. Upload Sensor Firmware V5.10 to sensor (please follow detailed guidelines below) 

3.  IMPORTANT: Following a successful firmware load, manually set the current DATE 

AND TIME by the following method: 

Press the CONFIG button and choose GENERAL, from the CONFIGURE/ GENERAL/ choose 4 Time & 
Initial Position.  The following panel will allow you to set the current time and date: 

4.  IMPORTANT!! Now REBOOT sensor, failure to reboot the system will result in a receiver 
that will not track reliably.

How to upload FW 5.10 to System 500 (Important!): 

The following section describes the Firmware upload for a System 500 user, who is using actual versions 
4.xx to current version 5.06. For customers using System 500 with older Firmware please contact 
Surveying.Support@leica­geosystems.com 

Upload via PC_card: 
IMPORTANT: Do not use Compact Flash (CF) cards for the Firmware upload! Please only use 
Leica PCMCIA ATA Flash cards (memory > 4 MB) to run the Firmware upload 5.10 to System500 

1.  Use the downloaded file: 5_sen.fw 
2.  Use a Leica PCMCIA ATA Flash card! (A firmware upload via CF­cards will fail resulting in a 
inoperable system!) 
3.  Format the PCMCIA ATA Flash card using a System 500 Sensor. Copy the file 5_sen.fw to the 
GPS/PROG directory of the memory card. 
4.  Be sure that the System 500 batteries are fully charged. 
5.  Put the PC­card into the PC card slot of the sensor, switch ON the sensor and select “7 
TRANSFER” from the main menu. 

6.  Choose menu item “10 Firmware”. 
7.  Select GPS500 (SEN) from the list box and press F1 (CONT). The upload process starts 
automatically. The complete transfer takes 2­3 minutes. The system will switch back to the main 
menu. 

Upload via LGO or SkiPro: 
If an ATA Flash PCMCIA card is not available, it is recommended to do a serial Firmware upload via 
LGO or SKI Pro. 
1.  Connect a GEV100 (560254) serial cable to the System 500 Terminal port (note, remove the 
TR500 controller first) and connect the System 500 via the cable to the COM Port of the PC. 
2.  Switch OFF System 500 and be sure the batteries are fully charged!!

3.  Start LGO Software Upload Tool wizard and follow the instructions carefully!  You will see the 
following screen: 

4.  Choose Upload…. Make sure the Sensor Firmware radio button is selected in the next dialog 
and press NEXT>. 
5.  Press the Browse… button and navigate to the folder you stored the downloaded 5_sen.fw file 
to. Select 5_SEN from the list: 

6.  Press Next to go to the last screen before install!!! Did you make sure the batteries are fully 
charged?  The firmware load can take over an hour, so if you are ready press Finish. 

For additional details regarding firmware installation using LGO, please refer to LGO Online Help in 
the chapter: ToolsàSoftware Upload.  If you encounter issues with the firmware load and can no 
longer start the receiver, contact your local Leica Geosystems Representative.  They have been 
briefed on how to handle the issue.
