MARTHA WASHINGTON GERANIUM


PELARGONIUM DOMESTICUM

Also known as regal geraniums, this group


of geraniums features richly colored
blooms with petals that resemble velvet.
Petals have a lovely ruffled effect that
enhances the plants’ luxurious feel. Two
common patterns are solid petals with
white edging or white centers.

Care and Maintenance:


 It requires six hours of sun each
day.
o Locate in a bright area, out
of direct sunlight.
 Pot the plant int the right soil.
o Geraniums grow in a wide
range of soil types but do
best in rich, well-drained
soil.
o Potting soil must contain
peat and vermiculite as the
main ingredients
o The pot must be at least 8
inches in diameter and has
drainage holes in the
bottom or sides
 Feed the plant every two weeks.
o Choose a fertilizer with the
first number being no more
than half the other two
numbers (4-8-10)
o Only water when the top 2
inches of soil feel dry to
the touch.
 Trim off the spent flower heads
AFRICAN VIOLET
SAINTPAULIA IONANTHA

African violets are popular indoor plants,


valued for their slightly fuzzy, ruffled leaves
and colorful little blooms in various shades
of purple, pink, blue, red and white.

Care and Maintenance:


 Pot the plant into the right soil.
 African violet plants are picky about
water
o Water with lukewarm or
tepid water that was
allowed to stand for 48
hours.
o Water at the base. Never
splash the foliage with
water.
 Provide appropriate lighting. Light
intensity should be filtered, with
bright to medium intensity.
 Fertilize African violet plants with
special African violet food or a food
with a higher phosphorus number.
PEACE LILY
SPATHIPHYLLUM WALLISII

Peace Lilies are among the most popular


indoor flowering plant. Characterized by an
attractive foliage and blooms, peace lilies
are also referred to as closet plants due to
the ease of care even in sunlight-
challenged areas indoors.

Care and Maintenance:


 It is more tolerant of underwatering
than overwatering. Water only
when needed.
 Peace lilies do not need frequent
fertilizing.
 Wash or wipe down the leaves at
least once a year to help the plant
process sunlight better
 Repot or divide when it outgrows
its original pot.

GLOXINIA
SINNINGIA SPECIOSA

Today’s gloxinias are hybrids bred to


quickly produce a large number of
blossoms. These gloxinias produce an
outstanding display for about two months,
but once the flowers fade, the plant rarely
comes back because it invests all its energy
into flowers rather than sturdy roots.
Therefore, these plants are best grown as
annuals, and since they are discarded after
the bloom cycle.

Care and Maintenance:


 Its care and maintenance focus on
keeping the plant looking fresh
while it is in bloom.
 Locate in a bright area, out of
direct sunlight
 Water often enough to keep the
soil moist. Apply the water directly
to the soil under the leaves
 Use a high-phosphorus liquid plant
food every two weeks
 It does not need repotting.
ANTHURIUM
ANTHURIUM ANDRAEANUM

Anthuriums are a huge genus of beautiful


blooming plants available in colors ranging
from red, pink, yellow, white, green and
even lavender. Although it is most often
associated with tropical locales, anthurium
plants could also be enjoyed indoors even
in a chilly northern climate.

Care and Maintenance:


 It grows best in bright indirect
sunlight.
 Soil must be free draining but still
holds some water.
 Water when the soil is dry to the
touch.
 It does not require too much
fertilizer.
o fertilized with a one-
quarter strength fertilizer
once every three to four
months
o to get the best blooms, use
a fertilizer that has a higher
phosphorus number
