NON-EXPERIMENTAL RESEARCH

Learning outcomes:
In this lesson, you will be able to:
1. increase the number of English words you know;
2. express your world views using newly learned words;
3. determine your knowledge as well as the ideas you want to know
more about non-experimental research;
4. familiarize yourself with the nature of non-experimental research;
5. present a good plan of your survey research; and
6. conduct a non-experimental research, such as a survey research.

Non-experimental research
• is the type of research that does not involve the manipulation of
control or independent variable. In non-experimental research,
researchers measure variables as they naturally occur without any
further manipulation.
Aspects on Planning Experimental Research
1. Specify the problem or topic of your research.
2. Formulate the research problem or hypotheses.
3. Determine the dependent and independent variables.
4. Select the participants or subjects.
5. Decide on the specific type of experimental research, whether it
will be a true experimental or quasi-experimental research.
6. Conduct the experiment.
7. Collect, analyze, and interpret the results.

Types of Non-experimental Research

1. Descriptive Research – the researcher will observe, document,
and describe the things that is happening naturally but without
manipulation. For example, a researcher is examining the
headache of the students in specific strand such as ABM, HUMSS,
GAS, TVL, STEM, etc.

2. Correlational Research – it means relationship between two

things. The researcher is examining the phenomena, or simply
examining the cause and effect relationship. For example, the
smoking and lung cancer.

3. Developmental Research – it means the researcher is examining a

particular thing in a particular point of time. For example, a
researcher is studying on the perception of ABM students towards
the accounting or business management profession.

Survey Research – this one is very familiar, it means collecting the data
or information from your subjects regarding their opinion, attitude and
perception towards particular thing
Many immediately come to think of survey research the moment they
hear or read the expression, non-experimental research. This is so
because survey research is the most used non-experimental research.
Survey research is a method of research that aims at knowing what a
big number of people think and feel about some sociological issues.
