complications of surgery
infection and how to manage
the risks associated with
internal infection or bleeding
2. Inform client that this
procedure is permanent and
irreversible and associated
with high healthcare costs
3. Teach client the limitations
regarding physical activities
such as heavy work and
lifting immediately after the
surgery.
4. Inform the client that this
procedure does not protect
against sexually transmitted
diseases such as HIV/AIDS.
5. Inform the client that this
procedure requires an
operating setup and an
extensive physical
examination that should only
be done by a trained service
provider.

• Male sterilization
1. Inform the client that this
procedure does not
interfere with the male
hormonal function and
how this does not affect
his sexual ability and
ejaculation
2. Teach the client how to
manage the discomfort
and pain associated with
the surgery such as
placing an ice pack on
the scrotum to reduce the
swelling.
3. Teach the client to keep
the genital area as clean
and dry as possible in
order to avoid infection.
4. Teach the client to refrain
from any strenuous
physical activity or any
activity that may cause
excessive sweating as
this may cause irritation.
5. Teach the client to avoid
any blood thinning
medications unless
otherwise prescribed by
the doctor as this
increase bleeding
complications during
recovery.

taking these medications
comes with certain side
effects such as nausea,
dizziness and
tenderness in the breasts
which may be difficult to
tolerate.

regarding the health risks
associated with taking
birth control pills.
4. Teach the client that
taking these pills do not
necessarily mean that
they are altogether
protected from sexually
transmitted diseases
such as gonorrhea and
AIDS.
5. Teach the client not to
take these pills along
with certain drugs such
as rifampicin and most
anti-convulsant as this
will lower its
effectiveness.

1. Teach the client that this

• Male condom form of contraception
may cause allergies to
those who are sensitive
to latex or lubricant.
2. Teach the client how to
properly insert the
condom into the erect
penis in order to
effectively prevent the
sperm from getting in
contact with the egg cell.
3. With regards to family
planning, it is important
to teach the client’s
partner/husband to
participate in family
counselling sessions
especially with
contraception methods
that involve his
cooperation such as
condoms or natural
methods. Family
planning methods tend to
be more successful with
the cooperation of both
parties and men need to
understand the important
part they play in
reproduction and raising
a family.
4. Inform the client that this
method might decrease
sensation and make sex
less enjoyable for their
partner.
5. Teach the client
regarding the benefits of
using condom and
encourage them to do so
since it offers protection
against STIs such as
AIDS.

• Injectable 1. Teach the client

regarding the importance
of using contraceptives,
particularly modern
methods as opposed to
traditional methods. For
information about
modern methods among
the young, emphasis
should be given to
messages and content
that dispel rumors and
fear of side effects.
2. Teach the client
regarding the pros and
cons of injectables and
further counsel and
support the couple on
which method suits them
best.

problems that may arise
with the selected
method.

method of contraception
contains a synthetic
hormone which
suppresses ovulation
and is not suitable for

have a regular period.
5. Inform the client that
although injectables do
not require daily intake,
they still need to visit
their doctor or sexual
health clinic every few
months since the effects
of the injectables tend to
wear off during this
period

• Lactating Amenorrhea Method 1. Educate the client on

(LAM) how using LAM
contributes to improve
overall maternal and
child health and nutrition.
2. Teach the client that this
method is considered as
an introductory, short
term family planning
method which is effective
only a maximum of 6
moths postpartum.
3. Teach the client that the
effectiveness of LAM
may decrease if a mother
and child are separated
for extended periods of
time.
4. Teach the client that full
or nearly full
breastfeeding may be
difficult to maintain due to
a variety of social
circumstances such as
the client being a working
woman who may not
have the time to fully
make use of the LAM.
5. Teach the client that this
method of Family
Planning does not
protect or help prevent
STIs such as HIV and
AIDS.

• Mucus /Billings/ Ovulation 1. Inform the client regarding

the importance of abstaining
from any sexual activity
during her fertile or wet days
to avoid pregnancy and

disease or condition that
results in extraordinary
vaginal discharge that
makes observation difficult.

the most fertile
observation/characteristics
at the end of the day.

• Basal Body Temperature (BBT) 1. Teach the client how to

accurately take her
temperature the same
way every day and
record these findings
daily on a fertility
awareness chart.
2. Teach the client that in
order to track their
temperature accurately,
they have to do it as soon
as they wake up, before
they even get out of bed
and before any activity
throughout the menstrual
cycle.
3. Teach the client that safe
days begin after the
increase in your
temperature lasts for at
least 3 days, which
begins at the 4th day of
the thermal shift and
ends when your
temperature drops just
before your next period
begins.
4. Inform the client that the
temperature method is
more effective when you
combine it with the other
fertility awareness
methods
5. Teach the client
regarding the various
factors which may affect
the change in
temperature such as
being upset or not
getting enough sleep,
smoking, drinking
alcohol, jet lag, being
sick or stressed, and
using an electric blanket.

• Sympto-thermal period (STH) 1. Teach the client to

observe cervical fluid
secretions and record the
characteristics of their
secretions on a daily
basis.
2. Teach the client to record
her basal body
temperature which is
done when they first
wake up from sleep.
3. Teach the clients to
identify the days of
fertility and infertility and
then decide whether to
have or avoid sexual
relations depending on
their family planning
goals.

with the client’s partner
since family planning
methods tend to be more
successful with the
cooperation of both
parties and men need to
understand the important
part they play in
reproduction and raising
a family.
5. Teach the client that this
method of using fertility
awareness to prevent
pregnancy does not
protect against sexually
transmitted infections
(STIs), including human
immunodeficiency virus
(HIV). Fertility
awareness-based
methods may not be a
good choice if the client
is at high risk of getting a
sexually transmitted
infection.

• Two Day method 1. Inform the client and her

partner that this method
of family planning
requires the cooperation
of the husband since he
needs to understand the
important role he has in
the shared responsibility
in this method of fertility
awareness.
2. Teach the client that this
method can be unreliable
for some women who
have prior medical
conditions that cause
abnormal cervical
secretions.
3. Teach the client that this
method of family panning
does not protect them
from HIV/AIDS.
4. Teach the client and her
partner to have a shared
sense of responsibility,
cooperation, and
discipline in
implementing this
method of fertility
awareness and family
planning.
5. Inform the client
regarding the benefits of
this family planning
method such as how it
incurs little to no
healthcare costs, is
reversible and is
acceptable to couples
regardless of culture,
religion, and
socioeconomic status.

• Standard Days Method

1. Teach the client and her
partner to use color-
coded beads to mark the
fertile and infertile days

have menstrual cycles
between 26 and 32 days
long.

abstain from any sexual
intercourse during the
fertile period.

the client especially
women who recently had
a baby or are
breastfeeding, as well as
women who recently
discontinued a hormonal
contraceptive may need
to follow special
instructions and talk to
their healthcare provider
before using Standard
Days Method.
5. Inform the client that this
method of family
planning and fertility
awareness does not
protect them form STDs
such as HIV/AIDS.
