Module 1
Lesson 1

Now that you have finished Lesson 1 of Module1 below are activities that would
refresh your memory.

Part I: “The 1st Menstruation Story” Every woman has different experience when
their monthly period approaches and during the menstrual period itself.

The interview regarding “The Menstruation Story” was conducted by the interviewer
Sean Sarigumba of CNU-CN at 3:00 PM on a Thursday afternoon. The interviewee
L.K.Y. gave her consent one the above-mentioned topic and requested anonymity on
the recorded transcripts. I began with some icebreaker statements to lighten the mood
and promptly proceeded to ask the required questions. I asked her what specific age
she began her menarche to which she replied with her being 11 years old at that time
and it had been a rather shocking experience since she was uninformed how to handle
such occasions especially since it occurred during school hours. Then I asked her
preconceptions about menstruation to which she replied that fore her, this personal
experience was one more step towards adulthood and thus, she had this sense of
responsibility to become more mature and self-actualized as a person. Then I asked
her how she felt upon realizing that she had begun menstruating. She said that she
felt quite surprised upon discovering that she had begun her monthly cycle but was
also thankful and relieved that the menstrual blood did not go through her clothes.
Over the years, she developed this intuition regarding the onset of her menstruation
stating that she had these “alarms” with her monthly cycle. These include varying
degrees of discomfort, irritability with the occasional cravings which she referred to as
“our hormones acting up”. I asked her what she thought of this and she said that it was
a completely normal experience since she didn’t really notice anything on her first
menstruation which may be due to the fact that she was also uninformed with the
specifics of these biological processes. Then I asked her about the manifestations she
had with her first menstrual experience to which she replied “wala sad koy signs bitaw”.
For her, it was something that just happened however she also described that she and
her mother felt shocked upon the discovery but otherwise, it was not anything out of
the ordinary. Lastly, I asked her regarding the cultural practices of her grandparents
regarding menstruation and how she reacted upon hearing them. Initially, she felt
confused because she was told by her grandparents to wash the blood off her
underwear and wipe it on her face with the addition of having to jump three times on
a staircase and then further wipe her face with egg whites.
